The Palestine Chronology

Off the coast of the Gaza Strip nr. Rafah, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats, causing severe damage but no injuries. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts house searches and arrest raids in 2 villages nr. Ramallah and 1 village nr. Hebron; patrols in Salfit and 2 nearby villages, as well as 2 villages and al-Fawar r.c. nr. Hebron. Meanwhile, 1,000s of Palestinians march in Bethlehem to mark 2 anniversaries: the death of Yasir Arafat, as well as the signing of the Palestinian declaration of independence in 1988. In the Galilee, Druze and Muslim Palestinians clash in Abu Snan, leaving 37 injured. The fighting is born from tensions related to the 11/8 killing of a Palestinian by an Israeli police officer in Kafr Kanna. (MNA 11/15; PCHR 11/20)

IDF troops in the n. Gaza buffer zone fatally shoot 2 Palestinian boys (ages 12, 13), wound a 3d (age 16) who stray nr. their position. The IDF also makes an air strike on Khan Yunis, assassinating Islamic Jihad mbr. Fadi Abu Mustafa; sends troops into Gaza e. of al-Maghazi to conduct arrest raids and house searches, detaining 2 NSF mbrs. Islamic Jihad mbrs. fire 2 rockets fr. Gaza into Israel, causing no damage or injuries. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts arrest raids, house searches in al-Fawwar r.c. nr. Hebron, Nablus (firing on residential areas and blowing up cement blocks in the Old City, injuring 1 Palestinian, damaging 86 homes, 69 stores, 1 factory, 1 mosque, 1 church, electricity and water installations; the municipality estimates $75,000 in property damage); fires rubber-coated steel bullets, percussion grenades, tear gas at Palestinian, Israeli, and international activists conducting their weekly nonviolent protest against the separation wall in Bil‘in, injuring 4; beats and forcibly disperses 10s of Palestinians and several international peace activists who stage a nonviolent protest in Bani Na‘im nr. Hebron against the IDF’s declaration of a closed military zone on 1,500 d. of Palestinian land adjacent to Bnei Hefer settlement. In Khan Yunis, Hamas mbrs. fire an RPG at a Fatah training base, causing no injuries. In Ramallah, unidentified gunmen fire on a PA police station, causing no injuries. A day after the Lebanese government voted to give the military carte blanche to take action against FI, the Lebanese army tightens its cordon on Nahr al-Barid r.c., directs heavy artillery barrages on FI sniper posts and 3 positions on the outskirts of the camp, seizing them, and moves into the camp for the 1st time, taking control of limited areas inside the camp. The clashes leave at least 3 Lebanese soldiers, 2 FI mbrs., 14 others inside the r.c. (FI or civilians) dead and 60 civilians, 18 soldiers wounded. At least 8,000 civilians are still inside the camp. Large pro-PLO rallies held throughout o.t. to commemorate third anniversary of Palestinian "declaration of independence." Israeli border guards shoot, kill Musa Ghazi Muhammad Abu 'Id as he spray paints slogans on a wall inside E. Jerusalem's old city. (MEM 11/15)

E. Jerusalem newspapers list names of some 30 new members of the political committees in the o.t. The committees already count some 150 members, reportedly largely Fateh activists but some from the Palestine Communist Party, DFLP-'Abd Rabbuh faction. (Qol Yisra'el 11/12, 11/14 in FBIS 11/14)

Fateh leaflet circulated in o.t. orders political committees to disband after receiving orders to this effect from Yasir Arafat. The order stated that the committees should be reorganized by a special committee made up of seven representatives from both the West Bank and Gaza, plus a president. Fateh leaflet asserts that the underground committees of the intifada, not the political committees, should form the basis for the future Palestinian state. Citing American, British, and Israeli intelligence experts, New York Times reports Iraq has acquired nuclear weapons capacity that could enable it to begin manufacturing and using nuclear weapons within 10 years [NYT 11/18; CSM 11/19].

King Hussein opens Jordanian parliament with bleak assessment of Jordan's prospects in wake of Gulf crisis and attacks "blatant and shameless" hypocrisy of nations involved in military buildup in Saudi Arabia (cf. 11/19) [NYT 11/18].

Curfew imposed on o.t. on 11/15 to prevent demonstrations on 2d anniversary of Palestinian declaration of independence is lifted in West Bank; most of Gaza Strip remains under curfew [JDS 11/17 in FBIS 11/21].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli PM Shamir pledges to build more settlements if he forms coalition [WP 11/6]. Al-Fajr daily publishes Palestinian declaration of independence calling for the establishment of Palestinian state, reaffirming PLO as sole representative of Palestinian people, calling for superpowers and western governments to work toward the implementation of UN resolutions and Geneva agreements, and stating the sole path to peace is through international convention. The paper states that this will be issued at PNC meeting in Algiers [LAT 11/5]. Rujayb enters 8th day under curfew [FJ 11/13].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Demonstrations erupt in Jabalya, Beach, and Khan Yunis camps leaving at least 13 people wounded from gunfire. In Silwad troops shoot, wound 3 Palestinians. At Balatah camp 2 Palestinians are injured. In Bethlehem soldiers use plastic bullets to break up demonstrations. At least one woman is injured [FJ 11/13].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: The Washington Post reports that Faysal al-Husayni, arrested and placed under administrative dtention last week by Israeli authorities, has been linked to effort to issue Palestinian declaration of independence [WP 8/7]. Asst. Sec. of State Richard Murphy warns top Israeli leaders that situation in the Middle East is becoming more unstable. [LAT 8/8]. In Ramallah a strike continues in protest of killing of Palestinian youth [FJ 8/14].

Arab World: King Hussein announces he no longer supports U. S. peace plan in which Palestinians would be represented through a joint delegation with Jordan [LAT 8/8].

Military

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Several Palestinians are injured in clash with Israeli troops in Kafr 'Ayn. In Bani Na'im after firebomb is tossed at military vehicle troops round up all males in village between 14 and 60; many are beaten, 20 are arrested. In Duhayshah 1 person is injured during clashes with soldiers. In Qalqiliyyah two people are injured by rubber bullets. Shuwaykah was placed under curfew [FJ 8/14].
