Min. bans use of book Central Issues in Recent History of the State of the Nation by Amnon Haver for its reference to "Palestinian nation."

Other Countries: George Habash (PFLP) & Nayef Hawatmeh (DFLP) meet with Soviet officials in Moscow to discuss PLO reunification. US Senate Foreign Relations Com. publishes pessimistic report on Israeli economy, stating without current US aid (12% of GNP), balance of payment problem "unmanageable," and increased US aid will not "significantly ameliorate" these problems posing serious security threat to Israel. At Israel Bonds dinner in Los Angeles, American-Jewish oilman Armand Hammer announces project to search for oil in Israel. In New York libel trial, Sharon claims COS Eitan ordered Phalangists into Sabra & Shatila camps (9/82).

Arab World: Pentagon orders US carrier Eisenhower totake position within range of Lebanon for possible "retaliatory strikes" there.

Occupied Palestine/lsrael: UN Undersec. Urquhart meets with DM Rabin and Gen. Moshe Levy to discuss possible expanded UNIFIL role in Lebanon.

Other Countries: US Senate passes bill HR3398 (96-0) containing provision for a Free Trade Area with Israel. EL AL (London) reveals it has been supplying food to Arab airlines.

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Youths on Ramallah-Nablus road and near Dhahariya village stone Israeli vehicles.

Arab World: After Israeli-led "South Lebanon Army" patrol ambushed nearby, killing 4, IDF troops and SLA forces herd together unarmed Shi'ite male villagers (between ages 15 & 60) and unleash revenge-seeking Druze SLA militia members to kill 13 and wound 27. Suicide truck bombing at US Embassy annex in Aukar (East Beirut) kills 23. IDF expels 4 British journalists from S. Lebanon [as Israel bars journalists without written IDF permission from area].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Residents of 'Ain Yabroud and Silwad villages regain land from Ofra settlers upon presenting deeds to Ramallah district military authorities. Bank of Israel devalues shekel (by 1%) for second consecutive day.

Arab World: PLO reconciliation talks in Aden produce tentative political agreement between Fateh and the Democratic Alliance (DFLP, PFLP, PLF and the Palestinian CP). 3 UNRWA officials flee Lebanon after receiving death threats.

Other Countries: US Senate approves FY 1985 aid package for Israel: $1.2 billion economic, and $1.4 billion military aid.

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Labor candidate Peres tells World Jewish Congress that Camp David not only basis for negotiations between Israel and Jordan. Peace Now members end conference with decision to follow Labor Party platform in July elections. Israel Discount Bank announces 1983 loss of $17.2 million.

Arab World: Lebanese cabinet holds inauguration mtg. in absence of National Salvation Front leaders Berri, Jumblatt and Abdullah Rassi.

Other Countries: Israel asks US help in securing return of 3 Israelis seized yesterday in Syrian-held territory in Lebanon; claims they are diplomats. Before US Senate Appropriations Com., US amb. to UN Kirkpatrick slams criticism of Israel in Security Council. Addressing B'nai B'rith Caribbean District convention in Panama City, Costa Rican Pres. Monge responds to int'l. criticism for moving embassy to Jerusalem, vowing not to "give in to diplomatic terrorism."

Occupied Palestine/Israel: 2 IDF-trained Kiryat Arba settlers arrested in connection with 4/27/84 bombing plot confess to attack on Hebron Islamic College where 4 Arab students were killed and 33 wounded; 3rd man reportedly sought. Arab World: Syria reports 3 Israelis arrested (5/1/84) held in Syria. Israeli soldiers kill 1 and wound another suspected of planting roadside bomb south of Tyre.

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Elected Ramallah mayor Khalaf released from town arrest imposed in March 1982. Returning from US visit, Finance Min. Cohen-Orgad warns dollarization would have dangerous consequences, and refutespeculation he promised US to cut settlement budget.

Arab World: IDF lifts 2-day curfew on Arab Salim village in S. Lebanon after 2 Israelis killed in ambush (2/28/84).

Other Countries: USSR withdraws support from French proposal for UN force in Lebanon. Canadian MP Watson rejects Jewish community's protest at his mtg. with Chrmn. Arafat on recent Middle East tour. Int'l. Olympic Com. pres. Samaranch pledges to try to satisfy Israel's request to be included with European sports groupings. Int'l. Labor Org. votes to admit Israel to its Asian Regional Conference.
