The UN General Assembly voted to request an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on the Israeli occupation the West Bank and whether it considers the occupation temporary or permanent. 87 countries voted in favor, with 23 against and 53 abstentions. Leaders at the Arab-China Summit in Riyadh called for a just and lasting solution, based on the 2-state solution, to the Israeli occupation of Palestine in their final communique of the summit. In a speech at the summit PA president Mahmoud Abbas called for the international community to not work with any Israeli government that refused to work within the framework of international law. Palestinian member of the Knesset and leader of the Hadash party Ayman Odeh met with UN secretary-general António Guterres in New York, briefing Guterres on his concerns about the government Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to present within a couple of weeks. Israeli ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan called the meeting “cowardly and shameful.” Israeli media reported that the meeting was made in coordination with the PA rather than with the Israeli foreign ministry. Egypt’s foreign ministry issued a statement warning Israel against continuing its attacks on Palestinians, noting that more than 200 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in 2022. The ministry warned that the situation will continue to deteriorate if Israel continues its current practices. (HA 12/9)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers assaulted 1 Palestinian near Burqa, damaging his vehicle. Israeli settlers also assaulted Palestinians in Hebron. Israeli forces shot and killed 1 Palestinian man in Huwwara. A video of the incident showed an Israeli soldier firing 4 shots at the Palestinian victim who was resisting the soldier’s attempt to detain him. The EU and the UN condemned the killing and called for an investigation. 11 Palestinians were injured protesting the killing, including 10 by tear gas and 1 with a baton round; Israel said that 2 soldiers were injured in a stabbing before the killing but it was unclear if the 2 incidents were directly related. It was reported that U.S. officials had told the incoming Netanyahu-led government that transferring responsibility for the Civil Administration away from the defense ministry could have consequences for Israeli-U.S. military cooperation. (HA 12/2)

Video footage of the incident released by Yesh Din shows Israeli soldiers directly aiding the settlers in the attack by handing them smoke grenades. The settlers also threw stones at homes nearby, smashing solar panels. Israeli settlers also threw stones at Palestinian vehicles traveling near Duma, causing damage. Malaysian authorities freed a Palestinian man who had been abducted, allegedly by Malaysian nationals working for Israel and trained by the Mossad in Europe. The alleged agents were arrested. Al Jazeera published an image of the bullet that killed Shireen Abu Akleh in Jenin refugee camp on 5/11. Ballistic and forensic experts said that the bullet was 5.56mm, used by Israeli forces, and manufactured in the U.S. (AJ, AP, HA 6/16)

The U.S. state department released a statement saying that secretary of state Antony Blinken told Israeli foreign minister Yair Lapid that Israel should investigate the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh on 5/11. Multiple independent investigations have concluded that Israeli soldiers killed the Al Jazeera journalist, including some that asserted the killing was intentional. Pro-Israeli political action committee the Urban Empowerment Action PAC announced it will spend upwards of $1 million in a primary to unseat the only Palestinian American congressperson Rashida Tlaib in the primary elections for the 12th congressional district in Michigan.
