Occupied Palestine/Israel: Soldier shoots dead Palestinian youth allegedly running from hills near Bayta. Army demolishes 5 houses in Bayta; village remains under curfew [WP 4/8]. At least 4 Palestinians are injured during demonstration in Nablus. There are also clashes in Ramallah and nearby village of Biddu as well as Jenin and village of Qabatiyyah. 'Ayn Bayt al-Ma' remains under army curfew. In Gaza Strip, Beach camp youth is shot, seriously wounded; violent clash is also reported in Jabalya camp [FJ 4/10].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Officials indicate Israel's leaders have decided to postpone expulsion of 5 Palestinians [WP 1/29]. Police Min. Haim Bar-Lev tours Nablus and 'Askar camp, confirms Irael will build several new detention centers in occupied territories, including 1 for children [FBIS 1/28; WP 1/29]. Military Action Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli troops open fire on demonstrators in Gaza Strip's Jenin refugee camp, wounding 1. Curfew on Jabalya is lifted but reimposed after crowds throw Molotov cocktails at Israeli patrol [WP 1/27; FJ 1/31]. In the West Bank, military imposes curfews on village of Qabatiyyah and Jenin camp following violent demonstrations. Occupied Palestine/Israel: Curfews on new and old 'Askar refugee camps are lifted; Bayt 'Ur al-Tahta curfew and Sa'ir blockade remain in force [FBIS 1/25]. Soldiers beat and teargas stone-throwing demonstrators in Rafah camp [FBIS 1/26]. Demonstrators blockade roads in al-Tur and other Jerusalem neighborhoods. Military lifts Jabalya camp curfew allowing workers to go to jobs in Israel. Curfew on Rafah camp is also lifted. In village of Idna, soldiers seize Arab-owned buses to raid village, attack protesters using tear gas and rubber bullets. Several villagers are injured. Arab World: Egypt's Pres. Husni Mubarak calls for 6-month cease-fire in occupied territories, international peace conference on the Middle East as part of new peace initiative [WP, LAT 1/22]. Jordan's P.M. Zayd Rifa'i tells parliament that 23 PFLP members have been detained on charges of attempting to instigate disturbances in Jordan [FBIS 1/25].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Baytunya Mayor Ahmad Lutfi 'Uthman is sentenced to 2 years imprisonment and fined over U.S. $800,000 on charges of misusing his office. He was originally charged with embezzlement. Two other officials are convicted in the case [FJ 4/26]. Al-Azhar Institute in Gaza City is ordered closed for 1 week [FJ 4/26]. Body of Salim Salamah Abu Rabi'ah from Hebron-area village of Sa'ir is discovered in Tel Aviv basement; family, who reported him missing in November 1986, are demanding investigation citing evidence of torture [FJ 5/3].

Arab World: Abu al-'Abbas announces his resignation from the PLO Executive Committee [FJ 4/26].

Other Countries: U.S. lodges formal protest with Algeria for allowing Abu al-'Abbas to attend PNC session [LAT 4/22]. Soviet Foreign Ministry states delegation of Soviet officials still intends to visit Israel [WT 4/22].

Military seals homes of 3 Palestinians in Sa'ir village who allegedly fired at civilian and military vehicles in the West Bank, according to military sources [JP 11/19]. 9 Palestinians are arrested in Aylut village, near Nazareth, in confrontation with Israeli authorities over attempt to confiscate their land [FJ 11/22]. Israeli Cabinet sends message to Reagan-Gorbachev summit meeting asking them to agree on allowing Soviet Jews to emigrate [LT, CT 11/18].

Arab World: King Hussein and Pres. Mubarak arrive in Oman for talks [FT 11/18]. Syrian Vice Pres. Abd al-Halim Khaddam states the Jordanian-PLO peace plan of last February is "dead" [JP 11/17]. Toronto Star reports Yasir Arafat has appealed to Syria to join the Jordanian-Palestinian M.E. peace initiative, welcomed Syria's rapprochement with Jordan [TS 11/17; WP 11/18].
