In the West Bank, 1 Palestinian was shot and killed after allegedly opening fire on settlers at the Beit El settlement; 1 settler was lightly injured. Israel forces later arrested 1 other Palestinian accused of being an accomplice. Israeli settlers raided Huwwara, leading to a confrontation between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians; 1 was injured with live ammunition and 8 others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Israeli settlers also vandalized olive trees in Qusra and Qaryut and stole olive harvests in Awarta. Israeli forces shot and killed 2 Palestinians and injured 5 others, including 3 medics, during a raid in Jenin refugee camp. Israeli forces also seized 1 bulldozer in Bayt Dajan. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 3 with baton rounds and others with tear gas. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinians in Hebron, causing tear-gas related injuries. Meanwhile, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Bayt Dajan, injuring 24 with tear gas. Malaysian authorities freed a Palestinian man who had been abducted, allegedly by Malaysian nationals working for Israel and trained by the Mossad in Europe. The alleged agents were arrested. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers throw stones at a Palestinian home in central Hebron and at Palestinian Bedouin homes in nearby Umm al-Khayr, causing no serious damage. They also steal olives from 420 trees outside Awarta village near Nablus. IDF troops assault Palestinian farmers harvesting olives outside the nearby Eli settlement, causing no serious injuries. They also assault a Palestinian during an arrest raid in Hebron and arrest 2 Palestinians during a raid near Bethlehem. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrest 1 Palestinian at an entrance to Haram al-Sharif and 2 professors preparing to hold a panel discussion on their new book in the Old City. One day after being wounded in an alleged assassination attempt, senior Hamas military leader Abu Naim alleges that the attack was a politically motivated effort to undermine the ongoing Palestinian national reconciliation process. “The objectives of those who committed this despicable act will not be achieved,” he says. Hundreds of Israeli settlers visit a Jewish holy site nr. Nablus overnight. Their IDF escort conducts raids in nearby Awarta village, closing its entrances. Later, IDF troops violently disperse Palestinians, Israelis, and international activists at Friday demonstrations against Israel’s occupation, separation wall, and settlements in 3 villages nr. Ramallah (Bil‘in, Ni‘lin, and Nabi Salih), Kafr Qaddum nr. Qalqilya, and along Gaza’s border nr. al-Bureij r.c.; 1 Palestinian is injured. IDF troops also assault and arrest an elderly Palestinian and her grandson during a raid in c. Hebron, and establish a mobile checkpoint nr. Nablus, sparking minor clashes with stone-throwing Palestinians. 1 Palestinian is injured. The IDF patrols nr. Qalqilya, Hebron, and Ramallah. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces assault 2 Muslim worshippers as they are leaving Haram al-Sharif. Off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats nr. In the 2d such incident in as many days, Israeli forces arrest several Islamic Waqf employees accused of planning maintenance work at Haram al-Sharif without permission from the Israel Antiquities Authority. Elsewhere in East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrest a Palestinian youth, accusing him of planning an attack on Jerusalem’s Light Rail after finding a knife in his possession. In the West Bank, IDF troops clash with stonethrowing Palestinians during raids in 2 villages nr. Ramallah; 1 Palestinian is injured. IDF troops arrest 1 Palestinian during further raids and house searches nr. Jenin, Qalqilya, and Ramallah; and patrol nr. Hebron throughout the day. Meanwhile, Israeli forces demolish several residential structures, 2 offices, and 3 water tanks nr. Jericho and 2 agricultural structures nr. Hebron. Israeli settlers attack a Palestinian shepherd nr. Ramallah, injuring her and killing several of her goats. Late at night, around 400 settlers enter Awarta village nr. Nablus to perform religious rituals, sparking minor clashes between their IDF escort and Palestinian residents of the area (there are no serious injuries). Israel’s Shin Bet accuses the Palestinian manager of the Gaza branch of World Vision, a Christian aid group, with redirecting around $43 m. of the group’s money to Hamas over the past 6 years. The manager, Mohammad Halabi, was arrested at the Erez border crossing on 6/15. Hours later, the Australian govt. suspends its funding of World Vision. The charity responds, saying that programs in Gaza “have been subject to regular internal and independent audits, independent evaluations, and a broad range of internal controls,” and that they “have no reason to believe the allegations are true.” (NYT, TOI 8/4; TOI 8/5; AJ 8/9)

Egypt’s military announces that it has killed the leader of the Sinai Province of the Islamic State (SPIS) with a recent air strike nr. al-Arish in n. Sinai. The strike was one of many that reportedly killed 45 other SPIS fighters and destroyed a lot of their supplies and munitions. (HA, REU 8/4)
