The Palestine Chronology

A total of 3 Palestinians and 1 Israeli settler are killed across the West Bank. In a contested incident, an Israeli settler and former Samaria Regional Council head rams a Palestinian youth with his car after she allegedly attempts to stab another settler at a checkpoint nr. Nablus; the girl is shot and killed at the scene. There are conflicting reports around the shooting, with some outlets alleging the driver shot the girl and others claiming it was either another settler or IDF soldiers stationed at the nearby Huwwara checkpoint. A Palestinian taxi driver is shot and killed hours later nr. Kefar Adumim settlement by an Israeli settler, who claims that the driver attempted to ram a group of settlers on a main road nr. Bethlehem. According to the IDF, the settler opened fire after he saw the Palestinian taxi driver exit his car with a knife. However, Palestinian eyewitnesses report that Israeli settlers threw stones at the taxi, causing the driver to swerve into another car. In the final of such incidents, IDF troops shoot and kill a Palestinian after he stabs and seriously injures an Israeli settler at the Gush Etzion junction nr. Bethlehem (the settler succumbs to her injuries later in the day). The IDF then raids a village nearby, arresting the Palestinian attacker’s 4 brothers and sparking clashes with stone-throwers; there are no serious injuries. (HA, JP, MNA, WAFA 11/22; PCHR 11/26)

Elsewhere in the oPt, IDF troops violently clash with Palestinians protesting w. of Qalqilya and outside a settlement nr. Ramallah; 3 Palestinians are injured. After reports of stone-throwing, Israeli forces impose an evening curfew and briefly close the main checkpoint in Huwwara, where a Palestinian girl was killed earlier in the day (see above). The IDF also conducts raids and house searches in 1 village nr. Nablus, as well as 4 villages and al-‘Arub r.c. nr. Hebron, confiscating personal property, arresting 11 Palestinians, and issuing arrest summons to 2; patrols in 5 villages and al-Fawar r.c. nr. Hebron and nr. Ramallah and Jericho. Israeli settlers throw stones at Palestinian property in 2 areas nr. Nablus, causing clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces after settlers throw stones at a Palestinian secondary school. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces conduct late-night raids in Ras al-Amud and Shu‘fat, arresting 6 Palestinians. In 2 separate incidents off Gaza’s coast nr. Occupied Palestine/Israel: The military imposes curfews on Nusayrat, Beach, Jabalya, Burayj, and Rafah camps in order to prevent demonstrations on the anniversary of Sabra and Shatila massacre. Curfew for Khan Yunis enters 5th straight day [FJ 9/18].

Other Countries: Sec. of State Shultz states that neither the establishment of a Palestinian state nor the continued Israeli occupation of Arab territories will resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict [WP 9/17].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Beach camp soldiers shoot, wound 2 Palestinians during demonstration; in Gaza City 2 Palestinians are shot, wounded; In Bayt Rima 4 Palestinians are shot, wounded [FJ 8/19].

Social/Economic/Political Occupied Palestine/Israel: Likud ministers David Levy and Ariel Sharon criticize IDF Chief of Staff Dan Shomron; Sharon demands demolition of all houses in Bayta, except those belonging to those who aided Israeli youths, and establishment of new settlement near village [WP 4/11]. Army spokesman announces it is investigating Palestinian charges that soldiers used bulldozers to damage more than 70 shops and houses in Bayt Ummar on 4/8. Army bulldozes 7 acres of olive trees near Bayta village [WP 4/11]. Israeli youths from group involved in Bayta clash meet with Trade Minister Sharon, criticize army's report of incident [NYT 4/11].

Other Countries: During meeting in Moscow, Gen. Sec. Mikhail Gorbachev urges PLO Chairman Yasir Arafat to recognize Israel's right to exist [WP 4/11].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli troops and Palestinians clash in several Jenin-district villages and camps. At least 86 are injured or affected by tear gas in Gaza Strip. At Jabalya refugee camp, protesters attack military post for 4th consecutive day. Demonstrations also erupt in Beach camp, Gaza City, and Rafah. Am'ari, Balatah, Jalazun, and 'Ayn Bayt al-Ma' camps as well as Bayta and Sa'ir villages are under curfew. Food shortages reported in Jalazun and Am'ari camps. Israel arrests Muhammad Abu Sha'ban, deputy chairman of Gaza Bar Association, and 4 Palestinian joumalists [FBIS 3/18; WP 3/19]. In Nazareth, large numbers of Palestinians participate in Rakah-organized demonstration [FJ 3/27]. Close to 700 prisoners from Gaza are moved to Ansar 3, newly opened detention camp in Negev desert [FJ 3/27].

Other Countries: U.S. announces it will send special envoy Philip Habib to Middle East in continuing effort to revive peace process [WP 3/19]. UN General Assembly opens emergency session to consider means to keep PLO observer mission open [NYT 3/19]. Former Atty. Gen. Charges were reduced from aggravated assault [FJ 3/20]. Trial opens in Jaffa of 2 soldiers and their superior officer in connection with 2/24 beating of 2 Palestinians that was filmed by CBS camera crew. Soldiers plead not guilty to assault charges; 2 others have already been convicted in connection with incident [WP, NYT 3/18]. Israeli is shot, wounded in legs near Gaza Strip's Jabalya camp. Curfew is imposed after attack [NYT 3/18]. In Ramallah, Israeli officials destroy olive grove along road where Jewish settlers' bus was bumed in firebomb attack [NYT 3/18; FJ 3/20]. Israeli authorities close shops and markets in Jericho; shops remain closed in Nablus, Jenin, and Tulkarm [FJ 3/20].

Military Action Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli troops open fire on demonstrators in Gaza Strip's Jenin refugee camp, wounding 1. Curfew on Jabalya is lifted but reimposed after crowds throw Molotov cocktails at Israeli patrol [WP 1/27; FJ 1/31]. In the West Bank, military imposes curfews on village of Qabatiyyah and Jenin camp following violent demonstrations.
