In the West Bank, Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian vehicles traveling near Luban al-Sharqiyya and at a house in the village. Israeli settlers also uprooted 35 Palestinian-owned olive trees in al-Twana. 8 Palestinians were arrested during raids in Tura al-Ghabiyya, Nablus, and Hebron; 1 Palestinian was assaulted by the raiding Israeli forces in Tura al-Ghabiyya and was treated at a hospital. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces violently dispersed a Christmas celebration caravan in Bayt Hanina. 1 Palestinian family of 4 was handed a demolition order for their 2-story house in Silwan. 4 Palestinians were arrested in and around the Old City and Issawiyya. U.S. secretary of state Mike Pompeo announced that the U.S. was inaugurating “a virtual presence post effective immediately” as the U.S. continues work to establish a physical consulate in the Moroccan-occupied Western Sahara. The U.S. announced on 12/10 that it recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara in return for Morocco normalizing ties with Israel. (AJ, HA 12/24)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers, accompanied by Israeli forces, raided al-Twana and injured 1 Palestinian. 8 Palestinians were arrested, including 6 during raids in and around Tulkarm, Yatta, Kafr Qaddum, Jenin, and Qalqilya; 2 were arrested at checkpoints near Nablus and Huwwara. In East Jerusalem, 3 Palestinians were arrested, including 2 during raids in Issawiyya, and 1 at the Haram al-Sharif compound. In Gaza, 1 rocket was launched at Israel, hitting 1 building; no injuries were reported. In Israel, some 2,500 people protested outside of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s official residence demanding his resignation over the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, the economy, and his corruption cases. This was the 22d Saturday in a row that Israelis protested Prime Minister Netanyahu. (HA, WAFA 11/21)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces handed a demolition order for a Palestinian-owned house in al-Twana sheltering 10 people; 1 other resident in al-Twana received a stop-work order. Israeli forces also confiscated 1 Palestinian-owned bulldozer in Tulkarm. 3 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Ramallah and Dura. In East Jerusalem, the Israeli supreme court ruled that 1 78-year-old man in Silwan could be evicted from his home after his landlord sold the house he was living in to the settler organization Elad. Israeli forces stormed the Bab al-Rahma area of the Haram al-Sharif compound. Israeli forces also delivered demolition notices for 1 mosque and the house of a Fatah official in Silwan. 2 Palestinian families started demolishing their own homes in Jabal Mukabir. The Israeli settler that in July 2015 burned the house of a Palestinian family, killing 1 18-month-old and his parents and severely burning 1 other child, was sentenced in an Israeli court to 3 life sentences. (GDN, REU 9/14; AJ 9/15; JP 9/16)

The Unified Palestinian Leadership for Popular Resistance, an umbrella organization formed on 9/3 after a meeting between the major Palestinian factions in Gaza and the West Bank, including Fatah and Hamas, declared 9/18 a day of mourning over the normalization agreements between the UAE, Bahrain, and Israel. Ahead of the signing ceremony on 9/15 formalizing the UAE and Bahrain’s normalization with Israel, PA prime minister Mohmmad Shtayyeh condemned the deal, calling it “a dark day in the history of the Arab nation and of the Arab League,” and further stated that, “[t]omorrow the Arab peace initiative dies, as will the Arab consensus.” He also said that his government has recommended to PA president Mahmoud Abbas that the PA reevaluate its relations with the Arab League. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu landed in Washington D.C. ahead of the signing ceremony for the normalization deals with Bahrain and the UAE on 9/15. His delegation notably did not include his coalition partners defense minister Benny Gantz and foreign minister Gabi Ashkenazi. A spokesperson for the Qatari foreign ministry ruled out that Qatar would normalize relations with Israel before peace is made between Israel and Palestine. (HA 9/14; AJ 9/15)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces evacuated a settlement outpost near Nablus. Israeli forces delivered 1 stop-work order for 1 house, demolition orders for 1 house and 4 agricultural structures in al-Walaja, and a demolition order for 1 house in Twana. Israeli forces also demolished a structure under construction which would have served as a COVID-19 testing facility in Hebron. Israeli settlers threw stones on Palestinian vehicles traveling on a main road in the northern part of the West Bank. 14 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Yatta, al-‘Arub refugee camp, al-Bireh, al-Am‘ari refugee camp, Jalazun refugee camp, Tubas, and Bayt Awa. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces demolished 1 Palestinian-owned house under construction in Jabal Mukabir. Israeli forces also arrested the directors of Yabous Cultural Center and the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music and seized documents from both institutions. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire on Palestinian fishermen within 3 nautical miles off the shore of al-Sudaniyya; no injuries were reported. At the UN Security Council, the Chinese ambassador expressed deep concern “about reports of the [Israeli] plan to annex part of the occupied Palestinian territories.” (HA, JP 7/22)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers assaulted 2 Palestinians west of Salfit. Israeli forces delivered stop-work orders for 1 shack, 1 room, 1 house, 1 residential tent, 1 tin residential structure, and 1 water well in al-Twana. 10 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Nahalin, Aida refugee camp, Hebron, ‘Araba, and Bayt Duqqu. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire on Palestinian fishermen west of Gaza City; no injuries were reported. A Palestinian family of 18 lost an appeal in an Israeli court to prevent their eviction. The court told them they have until 8/16 to leave their house in Silwan and pay the KKL-Jewish National Fund $5,800. The 1st application for the eviction of the family was filed in 1991 and asserted that the father of the family had abandoned the property. The court found that the family had failed to prove ownership of the building. (HA 7/1)

The secretary of state of the Vatican summoned the ambassadors of the U.S. and Israel to express the Holy See’s concern over Israel’s intentions to annex parts of the West Bank. (REU 7/1)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces delivered demolition orders for agricultural structures in Jiftlik and Bayt Dajan. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed protests in Kafr Qaddum; 3 Palestinians were hit by rubber-coated bullets. Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian herders in al-Twana, injuring 1. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces beat and arrested 4 Palestinians in the Old City. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire on agricultural lands east of Rafah and Khan Yunis; no injuries were reported. In the West Bank, Israeli forces demolished a shed in al-Zawiya. Israeli forces also clashed with Palestinians during a raid in Kafr Qaddum; 1 Palestinian was injured by live ammunition, another by a rubber-coated bullet, and 2 minors were arrested. Israeli settlers cut down 300 olive trees in an area between Bethlehem and Hebron. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces raided Issawiyya, leading to clashes. 2 Israeli military vehicles were damaged by Molotov cocktails and dozens of Palestinians suffered tear-gas related injuries; 1 Palestinian was arrested. Separately, Israeli settlers attacked Palestinians in al-Twana for the 2d day in a row. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinian farmers and herders east of Khan Yunis; no injuries were reported. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian herders in al-Twana, injuring 1 who was treated at a hospital. Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinians during the weekly anti-settlement protests in Kafr Qaddum; 1 Palestinian was injured by a rubber-coated bullet, others suffered tear-gas related injuries. In Gaza, Israel struck targets belonging to Hamas after a rocket was fired at Israel. Israeli authorities said it believed that Hamas operatives did not fire the rocket. Israeli forces also opened fire on agricultural lands east of Dayr al-Balah; no injuries were reported. In a letter to the U.S. State Department, 6 senators from the Democratic Party urged the Trump administration to release the funds allocated to humanitarian aid for Palestinians by U.S. congress to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Congress had allocated $75 million in aid to Palestinians for the 2020 fiscal year. The 6 senators who signed the letter were Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Tom Udall (D-NM), Tom Carper (D-DE), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Bernie Sanders (D-VT).
