In the West Bank, Israeli settlers raided Palestinian farmlands south of Hebron, leading to a confrontation between Israeli activists assisting Palestinians in protecting their lands and Israeli forces. 1 Israeli activist was headbutted by an Israeli soldier. Israeli settlers also threw stones at Palestinian vehicles near the Za‘atra checkpoint. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers blocked the Nablus-Ramallah road near Sinjil. Israeli settlers also unleashed dogs on Palestinians in Wadadi, causing injuries to 2 Palestinians. Israeli forces shot and killed 1 Palestinian man during a late-night raid in ‘Azzun. Israeli forces later violently dispersed the funeral procession for the Palestinian killed earlier in the day, injuring 2 with live ammunition. Israeli forces also took measurements for punitive home demolitions in Qarawat Bani Hassan of the family homes of 2 Palestinians accused of killing 1 Israeli settlement guard at the Ariel settlement on 4/29. 3 Palestinians were arrested in Qarawat Bani Hassan and 10 were arrested at the Qalqilya checkpoint after returning to the West Bank from East Jerusalem. B’Tselem reported that 2021 saw the most killing of Palestinians since 2014. According to B’Tselem, 319 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces and Israeli settlers. 9 Israelis were killed by Palestinians. The human rights organization also said 2021 saw the most demolitions of Palestinian homes in 5 years. 295 residential structures were demolished, displacing 895 Palestinians, including 463 minors. Israeli settlers also began construction on a tract of land in ‘Ayn Bus. Israeli forces seized and demolished residential tents in Khirbet Humsa provided by humanitarian agencies to displaced residents after Israeli forces demolished and confiscated and demolished 46 residential structures on 2/1 and 2/3. Israeli forces also demolished 1 water well in al-Mughayyir and 2 residential structures in Khirbet Yarza. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters demonstrating against stop-work orders delivered in al-Twana, leading to tear-gas related injuries. The U.S. said it will rejoin the UN Human Rights Council as an observer after the Donald Trump administration left the UN body, citing anti-Israel bias in 2018. The Biden administration wants to rejoin as a full member at an unset date. (NYT 2/7; TOI 2/8)

In an interview with CNN, U.S. secretary of state Antony Blinken said he applauded the normalization deals between Israel, the U.S., the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan, and said that peace between Palestine and Israel is far away, saying the 2 need to engage in peace before the U.S. can get involved. Secretary Blinken also said the Biden administration supported a 2-state solution but when asked about whether a Palestinian state would have East Jerusalem as its capital, he said it was part of final status issues, despite saying the U.S. considers Israel’s capital Jerusalem. Former secretary of state John Kerry said the U.S. supports East Jerusalem as a future capital of Palestine during the Barack Obama administration. Lastly, Secretary Blinken said that the Biden administration would consider supporting the return of the Golan Heights to Syria if Bashar al-Asad was no longer in power. The IDF conducts raids and sets up roadblocks and mobile checkpoints in and around Salfit, searching for the assailant. IDF troops also conduct raids in Burqin village near Nablus, arresting 2 Palestinians and sparking clashes (2 Palestinians are injured). Three Palestinians are injured and three more are arrested during clashes sparked by similar arrest raids in nearby al-Zawiya and Kafr al-Dik late at night. A senior IDF officer says that the exchange of cross-border violence in Gaza on 5/29 was the closest “we’ve come to a war in Gaza” since Operation Protective Edge, the Israeli assault in the summer of 2014. He says that the IDF is urging the government to loosen certain restrictions on Gaza in order to de-escalate tensions. “The [Israeli] political leadership has to decide with whom to make such arrangements, but in terms of Hamas’ situation in the Gaza Strip, now is definitely a good time to try to reach agreements that will enable [Palestinians in Gaza] to have a better life and bring a long period of quiet.” (HA 5/31; TOI 6/1)

Organizers of the ongoing Great March of Return, which commenced with a 30,000- strong protest in Gaza on 3/30, say that preparations are underway for renewed protests this week. “We welcome all participants of all factions, and appreciate their work for the success of this action that embarrassed Israel throughout the world,” they write, also calling on participants not to approach the border fence, for fear of giving Israeli troops an excuse to open fire. Israeli PM Netanyahu and U.S. president Trump speak briefly by phone in the evening. According to a White House statement, they discussed “recent developments in the Middle East,” and Trump “reiterated the commitment of the U.S. to Israel’s security.” Two White House officials describe the call as “tense” because of Netanyahu’s concerns about the reported U.S. plans to withdraw from Syria. Israeli police shoot and kill an Israeli settler after he allegedly attempts to stab 1 of them on the East Jerusalem side of the Hizma checkpoint. They reportedly mistook the settler for a Palestinian. Israeli forces later find the settler’s suicide note, showing that he intentionally attacked them with the goal of being killed. Elsewhere in East Jerusalem, approx. 90 right-wing Jewish activists tour Haram al-Sharif in the morning, marking Israel’s Independence Day. Israeli forces arrest 13 Palestinians during late-night raids in Sur al-Bahir, Silwan, and al-Tur. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers destroy a Palestinian well in al-Khadir nr. Bethlehem. Israeli forces level Palestinian land nr. Salfit to clear the area for settlers from nearby Ariel. IDF troops establish a checkpoint nr. An Israeli settler shoots and seriously injures a Palestinian youth nr. the Gush Etzion settlement bloc nr. Hebron. Further exacerbating Palestinian fears over the Judaization of Jerusalem, the Israeli press reports that PM Netanyahu recently proposed at a cabinet meeting the possibility of revoking the residency status of around 80,000 Palestinians in East Jerusalem who live in neighborhoods on the West Bank side of the separation wall, such as Shu‘fat r.c. According to sources present at the meetings, the cabinet did not discuss the proposal, and Netanyahu called for a separate meeting to discuss it further. In the Gaza Strip, Israeli forces kill a senior Islamic Jihad operative in an air strike on Jabaliya r.c., wounding 2 (including a child). UN Secy.-Gen. Ban Ki-moon says that he invited Iran to the Syria peace talks in Switzerland and held discussions with Iranian FM Zarif about the constructive role the country could play.
