Israeli forces arrest 22 Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Hebron, Nablus, Tubas, Bethlehem, and Jenin. In East Jerusalem, Israeli authorities force a Palestinian family to demolish their own home in Silwan. In Gaza, Israeli forces bomb Jabalia refugee camp, Gaza City, Nuseirat refugee camp, Khan Yunis, Beit Lahiya, Rafah, and al-Bureij refugee camp, killing at least 165 people. Israeli forces drop leaflets in Rafah with photos of 69 captives, saying “Want to go home? Provide information if you recognize one of the hostages.” An Israeli soldier is killed in combat. In Lebanon, Israeli forces assassinate 2 Hezbollah members in a drone strike on Bazouriyeh and bomb a 3-story house in Houla. More than 24,927 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, including at least 10,600 children and 7,200 women, and around 62,388 have been injured since 10/7. At least 7,000 people are missing in rubble, including 1,700 children. 362 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since 10/7, including 91 children. More than 4,310 people have been injured. Israel reports that 1,139 Israelis and foreign nationals have been killed and 5,400 have been injured in Israel since 10/7, including Israeli soldiers. In addition, 191 Israeli soldiers have been killed and 1,178 injured in Gaza since the ground invasion began on 10/27. Over 1.93 million Palestinians, nearly 85% of the population of Gaza, have been displaced since 10/7. There has been a complete electricity blackout in Gaza since 10/12 due to the Israeli blockade. At least 69,000 housing units have been destroyed and 290,000 have been damaged in Israeli airstrikes since 10/7, constituting over 60% of all housing units. 80 trucks carrying aid enter Gaza via the Rafah and Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossings. The Non-Aligned Movement issues a statement calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of the remaining captives and expresses support for the South African case against Israel at the ICJ after a summit held in Kampala, Uganda. In a speech to the Non-Aligned Movement members, UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres says the “wholesale destruction of Gaza and the number of civilian casualties caused by the Israeli army in such a short period are totally unprecedented during my mandate,” calling on Israel to end its attacks. The Intercept reports that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) donated $95,000 to House of Representative speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) after he pushed through a $14 billion aid package to Israel. In an interview with the Jerusalem Post, U.S. ambassador to Israel David Friedman says that the Trump administration is “disappointed with some of the rhetoric” coming from the Palestinians in response to U.S. pres. A Palestinian child succumbs to injuries sustained on 8/8/2014 during Israel’s summer 2014 assault on Gaza. Four members of the boy’s family were killed that day when an Israeli air strike targeted his family home. Meanwhile, thousands of Palestinians march through Gaza City in protest of U.S. pres. Trump’s reported decision to move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. IDF troops violently disperse dozens of Palestinians protesting along the border near Khan Yunis (there are no serious injuries). In a speech broadcast from the White House, U.S. pres. Trump announces that the U.S. recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and that his administration will begin the process of moving the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. “I have judged this to be in the best interest in the pursuit of peace between Israel and the Palestinians,” he says. PA pres. Abbas says that the U.S. can no longer serve as mediator between the Israelis and Palestinians. The IDF orders approximately 300 Palestinian Bedouins to evacuate their homes near the Ma’ale Adumim settlement ahead of the planned demolition of their village, Jabal al-Baba. One day after being wounded in an alleged assassination attempt, senior Hamas military leader Abu Naim alleges that the attack was a politically motivated effort to undermine the ongoing Palestinian national reconciliation process. “The objectives of those who committed this despicable act will not be achieved,” he says. The Jerusalem Municipality and Jerusalem District Council issue building permits for 176 new housing units in Nof Zion, an Israeli settlement inside Jabal Mukabir. During a meeting with settler leaders, Israeli PM Netanyahu promises to invest NIS 800 million (approximately $230 million) in roads and other infrastructure development in the West Bank, starting in 2018. The settler leaders’ reaction is mixed. Leader of the messianic Temple Mount movement and ultranationalist MK Yehuda Glick (Likud) and MK Shuli Moalem-Refaeli (Jewish Home) visit Haram al-Sharif under heavy police protection. Their visit follows Israeli PM Netanyahu’s decision to temporarily lift his ban on MKs and ministers visiting the sanctuary for 1 day only (Netanyahu initially imposed the ban in 10/2015 amid escalating violence across the oPt; see JPS 45 [2, 3]). Israeli forces plan to assess today’s visit and to make a recommendation about the ban’s future. A spokesperson for the Islamic Waqf says the decision to lift the ban is “unacceptable” and shows that “extremist right-wing entities are in control of the Israeli occupation’s government.” Elsewhere in East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrest 1 Palestinian in the Old City and another during a raid in Abu Dis. Israeli forces raze a swathe of Palestinian land south of Bethlehem to clear space for a new IDF training base, demolish a kindergarten in a Palestinian Bedouin community east of Jerusalem, and remove 6 prefab trailer homes near the Yitzhar settlement, sparking minor clashes with the Israeli settlers living in them (there are no serious injuries). Along Gaza’s border, Israeli forces conduct a limited incursion to level land near Khan Yunis. The demolition sparks clashes in the village; there are no serious injuries. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrest a Palestinian in Shu‘fat refugee camp, allegedly for carrying a knife. They also arrest 1 Palestinian during a late-night raid in Silwan. Along Gaza’s southern border, 2 Islamist fighters emerge from a smuggling tunnel leading from Egypt into southern Gaza, and 1 detonates a bomb belt when Hamas security forces confront them, killing himself and 1 of the Hamas fighters and injuring 5 others. The IDF maintains its closure of Hebron and the surrounding district, put in place in the wake of a settler’s killing on 7/1. IDF troops arrest 4 Palestinians during late-night raids and house searches nr. Hebron and Bethlehem, and patrol nr. Ramallah and Jenin throughout the day. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces demolish a nursery, car repair shop, and a number of tents in Anata r.c., sparking minor clashes with stone-throwing Palestinians (there are no serious injuries). Meanwhile, 50 Jewish settlers tour Haram al-Sharif with an Israeli police escort and pray at the sanctuary, despite the longstanding ban on non-Muslim prayers there. Along Gaza’s border, a Palestinian bedouin citizen of Israel crosses the border into Gaza, according to the IDF. IDF troops shoot and kill a Palestinian youth nr. Tulkarm who was attempting to sneak into Israel for work. The youth allegedly pulled a knife on the soldiers after they started chasing him. Meanwhile, Israeli forces demolish 4 Palestinian bedouin homes nr. Ramallah, displacing 22 people. The IDF raids a mobile phone shop in a village nr. Nablus, shooting and injuring a Palestinian, arresting him and 2 others they suspect are also affiliated with Hamas, and confiscating personal property. IDF troops conduct further raids and house searches in Aida r.c. and 1 village nr. Bethlehem, Jalazun r.c. and 1 village nr. Ramallah, Qalqilya, 1 village nr. Salfit, and Hebron and 1 village nearby, arresting 15 Palestinians; patrol in 5 villages nr. Hebron and 4 nr. Ramallah. After a “situational assessment” in the evening, the IDF ends the partial closure of the Ramallah area that was imposed after the 1/31 shooting attack in the area. Israeli forces pull out of the area before midnight, remove all mobile checkpoints, and return the checkpoints to normal use. Hamas reactivates Gaza’s separate Palestinian Legislative Council and convenes a session of the body, a move that contravenes the national reconciliation deal that was announced on 4/23. In Jerusalem, Israeli and Turkish officials reach an unspecified draft agreement in to end the diplomatic stand off. Israel’s Ministerial Committee on Legislation approves a bill for the development of the Negev, known as the Prawer-Begin plan, which would result in the forced displacement of tens of thousands of Palestinian Bedouin citizens of Israel. (MNA 5/6)

The Yesh Atid party, the second largest in the ruling coalition, decides to oppose Economy and Trade Minister Naftali Bennett’s proposal, first offered at the end of April, to pass a Basic Law requiring a referendum before any peace treaty with the Palestinians is signed. (YA 5/6)
