A day after receiving criticism from Palestinian NGOs about the COVID-19 vaccination distribution, the PA admitted that some vaccines earmarked for health workers had gone elsewhere. 1,200 of 12,000 vaccines had been given to the Palestinian national football team, government ministers, presidential guards, and members of the PLO executive committee. 200 were sent to Jordan to be given to members of the royal court. The PA civil affairs minister Hussein al-Sheikh announced that the PA would resume coordination with Israel, including security coordination, after suspending ties in May. Civil Affairs Minister al-Sheikh said that Israel had promised to respect its agreements with the PA during “international negotiations conducted by the president [Mahmoud Abbas].” Hamas and Islamic Jihad condemned the PA’s move, saying it undermines reconciliation efforts. PA prime minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said during a Zoom conference organized by the Council of Foreign Relations that the COVID-19 pandemic played a part in the decision as the PA have struggled to find the resources to fight it. Israeli said it defused explosive devices in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights near the de facto border of Syria. Israel later attacked Syria, striking 8 targets. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 10 people were killed in the strikes. Israel acknowledged to have attacked Syria, saying it was responding to the explosive devices and claiming that it had hit Iranian and Syrian forces in Syria. Omar Shakir, the Human Rights Watch director for Israel and Palestine, left Israel after being expelled. U.S. ambassador to Israel David Friedman and U.S. special representative for international negotiations Jason Greenblatt attended the inauguration ceremony of “Path of the Pilgrims,” an excavation of a large underground archeological site underneath Silwan in East Jerusalem. The excavation is led by the settler organization Elad, the Israeli antiquities authority, and the Nature and Parks Authority. The excavations have been going on for years and residents of Silwan have complained several times about damage to their properties due to the excavations. Israel’s Knesset passes into law a new bill deducting from the tax revenues Israel collects on behalf of the PA an amount equal to that which the PA pays in stipends to Palestinians imprisoned or injured in connection with serious crimes committed against Israelis and the families of Palestinians killed while committing such crimes. Specifically, the Israeli DM will submit an annual report documenting the PA’s stipends over the previous calendar year. The sum total will be divided by 12 and deducted from the monthly transfers over the subsequent year.
