Across the West Bank, Palestinians hold demonstrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the UN partition res., which created Israel. In Bethlehem, the IDF opens fire with rubber bullets on 5,000 Palestinians marching to demand Israel release Palestinian prisoners, injuring 40 (including a PA policeman), making today the worst single day of Palestinian-Israeli clashes in mos. 6 Irish UNIFIL soldiers are wounded while trying to clear Israeli mines fr. a road leading to their post on the edge of Israel's self-declared security zone. Israel has mined all roads in the area to "protect" an SLA post from resistance attacks, forcing the UN to communicate with its base solely by helicopter. In Israel, Mubarak adviser Osama Baz meets with PM Netanyahu in preparation for Mubarak-Netanyahu mtg. 5/27. Netanyahu refuses to freeze construction at Har Homa as a gesture to the PA, but agrees to temporarily suspend demolitions of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem.
