In the 1st attacks authorized by new Israeli DM Peretz, the IDF makes 3 air strikes on a PRC camp in Gaza in retaliation for 5/4 rocket fire, killing 5 PRC mbrs. (Hamada Daghmash, Juma’ Daghmash, Mahmud Daghmash, Wahid Daghmash, Khalid Wakid), wounding 2 in an apparent attempt to assassinate PRC cmdr. Mumtaz Daghmash, who lives nearby. The IDF also closes Gaza’s Sufa crossing for 2 days and Kerem Shalom crossing indefinitely; prevents Palestinians fr. Jenin, Nablus, Tulkarm in the n. West Bank fr. crossing checkpoints into the s. West Bank; shells a rocket launch site in n. Gaza, causing no injuries; fires on stonethrowing youths who confront troops during an arrest raid by an undercover unit in Nablus, killing 1 Palestinian, wounding 1, also occupying part of an apartment building as an observation post; patrols in Jenin, Yatta (firing on residential areas); conducts arrest raids, house searches in Balata r.c. In a formal protest to Israel, UNRWA notes that the IDF has barred access to Jerusalem fr. the West Bank for 4 days, which the agency says is unprecedented, hindering the movement of its personnel, undermining humanitarian operations. Israel allows Gaza’s Qarni crossing to open for export of goods to Israel, Sufa crossing (closed since 2/14) for the import of construction materials; shells the n. Gaza no-go zone, causing no damage or injuries; conducts arrest raids, house searches nr. Hebron, also firing on residential areas, wounding a Palestinian standing on his balcony; issues a military order confiscating 80 d. of Palestinian land for construction of the separation wall around Gilo settlement nr. Bethlehem. The IDF says that its liaison offices in the West Bank will continue to operate after a Hamas-led government is sworn in, but will no longer deal with any PA officials; they will deal only with international organizations, Palestinian hospitals, individual Palestinians. Palestinians fire 2 rockets fr. Gaza towards Ashkelon, damaging a building; in response, IDF artillery shells n. Gaza, hitting an apartment building, causing damage but no injuries; the IDF closes the Sufa commercial crossing into Gaza for the day. The IDF demolishes 2 Palestinian homes in and just southeast of Jerusalem; conducts arrest raids nr. Bethlehem, Qalqilya and in Askar r.c., Bayt Jala, Qabatya (occupying 2 homes as observation posts), Tulkarm. Nr. al-Arub r.c., IDF soldiers stop and search a Palestinian school bus; when a student on the bus allegedly opens a window without permission, a soldier shoots him in the face, seriously wounding him. Jewish settlers fr. Elon Moreh nr. Nablus vandalize Palestinian homes in nearby Bayt Furik; the IDF intervenes, removes the settlers. AMB Nablus cmdr. Responding to the 1/17 Ayadi assassination, an AMB gunman fires across the Gaza border nr. Bayt Hanun, fatally shooting an IDF soldier inside Israel. In response, the IDF recloses Gaza’s Erez crossing (reopened on 1/16 after 1 mo.) and Sufa commercial crossing. The IDF also arrests 7 Martyr Abu Ali Mustafa list candidates in Jerusalem as they prepare to hold a press conference on the upcoming elections; raids Jenin town and r.c., exchanges fire with wanted Palestinians, leaving 2 soldiers, 3 Palestinians wounded; also conducts arrest raids, house searches in ‘Ayn al-Bayda nr. The IDF assassinates senior Hamas military cmdr. Thabit Ayadi, fatally shooting him in a raid on Tulkarm, also arresting 3 Palestinians, raiding 10s of homes; demolishes 2 Palestinian homes nr. Bethlehem, 1 nr. Nablus; conducts arrest raids, house searches in al-Fawwar r.c., Hebron, Nablus, Ramallah. In retaliation, PRC mbrs. fire 2 rockets at the Sufa crossing into Gaza, causing no damage or injuries. The IDF also sends 100s of reinforcements to Hebron, where confrontations continue with Jewish settlers protesting their planned eviction fr. the Hebron market; several settlers are arrested. The IDF closes the Sufa commercial crossing in Gaza; demolishes 1 Palestinian home in Wadi al-Juz in East Jerusalem, 1 in Silwan nr. Hebron, in and around Tulkarm; sends troops into Ramallah to surround 2 mosques during dawn prayers, thoroughly checking IDs and searching Palestinians as they leave but making no arrests. PA security forces on a campaign to confiscate unlicensed Palestinian vehicles inadvertently foil an IDF undercover unit raid into Bethlehem when they stop the unit’s car, bearing Palestinian plates; the undercover unit calls in IDF backup, which surrounds the PA officers and orders them to lay down their arms until they retreat. The IDF reopens the Sufa commercial crossing into Gaza; imposes a curfew on Hawara nr. Nablus, forces stores to close, and surrounds 2 mosques, barring worshipers fr. praying; conducts arrest raids, house searches in and around Jenin and in Askar r.c., Hebron, Tulkarm town and r.c.; occupies the top floor of a Palestinian home in Hebron as an observation post. Before dawn, Islamic Jihad and Hamas fire more than 30 rockets fr. Gaza at Sederot and the Negev, 3 of which lightly wound 3 Israeli security guards, 2 civilians. Early in the morning, the IDF fires missiles fr. helicopters at warehouses and an alleged weapons factory in Gaza City and Jabaliya r.c., marking Israel’s 1st military operations against Gaza since disengagement; orders the Rafah crossing shut, saying it will allow humanitarian aid only into Gaza through the Sufa crossing; fires missiles fr. naval vessels at Palestinian fishermen who attempt to go out to sea; drops leaflets on Gaza warning of harsh retaliation against further rocket fire; warns the PA that it is responsible for preventing attacks fr. Gaza. Abbas meets with Hamas officials in Gaza, secures their pledge to halt all armed demonstrations. Hrs. later, IDF aircraft fire 5 missiles at 2 cars in n. Gaza, assassinating 2 Hamas mbrs. Meanwhile, the IDF seals the West Bank, fires on Palestinians waiting to cross a checkpoint outside Nablus, wounding 3 (1 seriously); conducts patrols in Jama‘in village nr. Nablus; raids 20 houses in Hebron, interrogating and photographing residents. In the evening, Sharon convenes his security cabinet, which approves an “all-out continuous offensive” called Operation First Rain, using artillery, air strikes, assassinations in Gaza, saying that if Palestinian violence continues after several days, the full cabinet will convene to consider sending infantry back into the Strip.
