Israeli-Palestinian clashes continue, leaving 2 Palestinian, 2 Jewish settlers dead. Nr. Ramallah, Palestinian gunmen ambush the car of Jewish settler leader Benjamin Kahane (son of late anti-Arab extremist rabbi Meir Kahane), killing him, his wife, injuring 5 of their 6 children. The al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade claims responsibility. The funeral procession through Jerusalem, attended by 20,000 Israelis, turns into riot, with Jews smashing storefronts of Palestinian shops, seeking out and beating Palestinians, injuring 10 Israeli riot police. Hrs. after the Kahane shooting, the IDF assassinates senior Fatah official Thabet Thabet, gunning him down outside his home in Tulkarm. The 2d Palestinian is killed in a drive-by shooting by settlers. Israel closes the Rafah crossing. IDF directs tank, heavy machine gun fire at residential areas of Amari refugee camp, Beitunia, al-Bireh, Khan Yunis, Rafah, al-Salam, Satih Marhaba. Machine gun fire fr. Occupied Palestine/Israel: Hadashot reports that Meir Kahane's Kach movement has set up Jewish "strike forces" to provoke and terrorize Arab population [FBIS 5/25]. Jerusalem court convicts Hanna Siniora, editor of al-Fajr, of censorship violation 2 1/2 years ago when al-Fajr published interview with Arafat without prior approval of censor [FBIS 5/26].

Arab World: Arafat speaks at Arab summit, asks for more money for intifadah; declares that none of the $128 million pledged at Algiers Arab summit (6/88) has been paid [FBIS 5/26].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Jabalya camp Israeli troops shoot, kill 20-year-old Palestinian. [FBIS 5/26, FJ 5/29]. In O.T. at least 48 Palestinians are wounded in clashes [FBIS 5/26]. Israeli military court acquits 4 Israeli soldiers of manslaughter in beating death of Palestinian; the court convicts 4 of brutality, rules that their orders were "manifestly illegal" [WP 5/26].

Arab World: In al-Ra'i (Amman) both Jordanian and PLO officials quoted saying Israeli election aided extremism and will lead to more Arab-Jewish violence in Palestine. Israeli liaison office in Dubayeh officially closed; Israel gov't. threatens closure "will necessarily cause great harm and suffering to the Lebanese people."

Other Countries: Chrmn. Arafat received by Malaysia's Sultan Iskandar in Kuala Lumpur for 3-day visit. US State Dep't. study possibility of revoking Meir Kahane's US citizenship for allegiance to foreign gov't.; officials say official action against him unlikely. Reagan aides meet Antiochian Orthodox and national Council of Churches leaders, reaffirm US stand against embassy transfer to Jerusalem. US Asst. Undersec. of State testifies before House Foreign Affairs Subcom. that, with outcome of Israel's elections, its economic situation is much worse than earlier suspected, and that US will resuscitate Reagan peace initiative.
