Occupied Palestine/Israel: Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha. Renewed talks produce basic agreement on bipartisan Israeli government. High Court refuses to make public Zorea Com. report regarding killing of Palestinian commandos in Gaza (4/12/84). Shattah prison (Nazareth) inmates find worms in food, stage hunger strike. Jnaid prison (Nablus) inmates strike after guards attack prisoners with tear gas in their cells, hospitalizing 4. Bank Hapoalim announces $8.2 million profit for 1st half of 1984.

Other Countries: In New York pre-trial hearing in his $50 million suit against Time, Ariel Sharon castigates its 2/21/83 issue's implication that he encouraged Sabra & Shatila massacres (9/82) as "blood libel."

Military Action

Arab World: IDF transfers responsibility for security in Nabatiya to South Lebanon Army; sends patrols north of Awali River. Israeli DM Arens meets SLA Gen. Lahd, expresses satisfaction with SLA performance. Former Lebanese PM Selim al-Hoss escapes remote-control bomb blast; 4 killed, 25 wounded.

Occupied Palestine/Israel: ICRC reports Israel failing to report arrests within 10- day limit. Nablus and Bethlehem residents complain of water shortages as Mekorot diverts supplies to Israeli settlements. Israel-American Zionists Assoc. in conjunction with Compass-Peltours and Israel Assoc. of Real Estate Dealers announce plan to offer US Jews lots (60' x 60') in occupied territories for $3,600 (including Israeli passport and subsidized mortgage options). Items at Hebron Islamic exhibit confiscated by "civil administration" as "inciteful." 2-10 Golani Druze charged by Kiryat Shemona magistrate for incitement and participation in recent demonstration.

Arab World: DM Arens tells Tel Aviv engineers' club Israel will keep Awali River bridges closed until attacks on IDF in S. Lebanon end. Lebanese gov't. decides to close Israeli liaison office north of Beirut.

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli bus used to transport Nablus labor to Israel burned at roadblock near Qabalan village.

Occupied Palestine/Israel: DM Arens denies reports that Israel is amassing troops in Beqaa for attack on Syria.

Other Countries: NBC television broadcast reports Israel supplies 25% of arms to rebels in Nicaragua.

Occupied Palestine/Israel: 5th American Jewish Kach settler arrested in connection with shooting of Arab bus passengers (3/4/84) and other "TNT" activities. 6 Israeli settlers tried in Jersualem for rioting and arson of Hebron market last year. Tel Aviv police unit leader Hafetz suspended for leaking information of "TNT" to press. Knesset defeats bill to declare "Hatikvah" Israel's national anthem, with its theme of a historic Jewish yearning for the "land of Israel." National Com. of Arab Town Councils urges adoption of national anthem that expresses the notion of two nations living in a single country. Returning from 3-day visit to Cairo int'l. trade fair, Israeli Industry & Trade Minister Patt reports no improvement in Israel-Egypt relations in sight; says 50% decrease in exports to Egypt since 1982 linked to poor political relations. US Marine commander Gen. Kelley begins 2-day official visit with IDF and DM Arens. At Jerusalem rally PM Shamir claims USSR refused renewed relations with Israel because of its hatred of the Jewish people. Members of Makuya sect of Japanese Christian zealots conduct pro-Israel march in Jerusalem.

Arab World: Beirut cease-fire called by leaders at reconciliation talks in Lausanne.

Other Countries: French Minister of Industry Fabius and Israeli Trade Minister Patt agree to further cooperation in commerce and industrial research. Pres. Reagan defends proposed arms package to Jordan before United Jewish Appeal. Added to his recent refusal to assist in obtaining Israel's permission for West Bank delegates to attend PNC session, Reagan refuses to support or withhold veto on Jordan's draft resolution condemning Israeli settlements in occupied territories as illegal. 4 JDL members arrested for criminal trespass and possession of noxious chemicals, and held in suspicion of bomb threat at Greensburgh, NY Town Hall showing of Russian architecture film. [JDL seeks severance of all US relations with USSR until all Soviet Jews permitted to emigrate freely.]

Occupied Palestine/Israel: 21 women inmates begin new hunger strike to protest rights violations at Neve Terza prison.

Arab World: Gemayel announces plan to meet opposition representatives at Lausanne. Syrian cabinet resigns at Pres. Assad's request.

Other Countries: From Brussels, Spain's PM Felipe Gonzalez Marquez expresses interest in diplomatic relations with Israel, and hope it might contribute to peaceful solution in Middle East; reveals that, on recent visit to Riyadh, Saudi gov't. applied no pressure not to recognize Israel. US Federal Communications Commission rejects petition by "Americans for a Safe Israel" to deny license renewal of 7 NBC stations in New England for "distorting" news of Israeli invasion of Lebanon.

Military Action:

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Bullet-filled petrol bomb thrown at Israeli patrol near Ramallah; no injuries. Petrol bomb thrown at home of Kalandiya village mukhtar. 1 passenger slightly wounded on Egged bus stoned near Eizariya near Jerusalem.

Arab World: Lebanese man shot dead by IDF invaders, forcing way into Qana, S. Lebanon [HQ of Fijian UNIFIL battalion] amidst villager's protests. Israeli DM Arens inspects Sidon harbor area. IDF convoy carrying MK Sharon ambushed near Sidon; Sharon narrowly escapes injury as remote control device explodes.

SOCIAL/POLITICAL:

Occupied Palestine/Israel: DM Arens warns Druze to stop assisting Palestinians and Syrians against Israel or it "will have no choice but to react." Druze MK Amal Nasser al-Din says Israel has nothing to lose in abrogating May 17 agreement and cooperating with S. Lebanese Shi'ites and Druze.

Other Countries: 2 Britons expelled from USSR for smuggling Zionist literature into country.

Arab World: LAF collapses as Druze forces link up with Shi'ites in south Beirut .

Occupied Palestine/lsrael: Special Cabinet session to discuss implementation of planned take-over of Hebron market postponed for members to attend Saad Haddad funeral.

Arab World: Fourth Islamic summit Conference convenes in Casablanca with 24 heads of state attending; Afghanistan, Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Libya and Syria presidents not attending. Maj. Saad Haddad buried in Marjayoun, Lebanon; Israelis attending funderal include PM Shamir, DM Moshe Arens, Ariel Sharon, Shimon Peres, FM David Kimche.

Other Countries: Officials of the National Assoc. of Arab Americans (NAAA) meet with US Pres. Reagan in Washington; urge Marines withdraw from Lebanon. Presidents of major American Jewish organizations send cable to W. German chancellor Kohl calling for cancellation of arms sale to Saudi Arabia.
