Occupied Palestine/Israel: Hanna Siniora, editor of al-Fajr, is charged with violating censorship laws related to a 1985 television interview and the 1986 al-Fajr diary [FJ 11/21].

Other Countries: W. German government states it will not break diplomatic relations with Syria despite evidence that Syria was involved in terrorist activity in Germany [WP 11/20]. U.S. Congress begins inquiries into the arms sales to Iran [BS 11/20]. U.S. Pres. Reagan says U.S. never condoned Israeli arms shipments to Iran but later states a third country was involved in the "secret project" [WP, NYT 11/20]. The Washington Post reports Israeli arms dealer Ya'acov Nimrodi arranged the U.S.-Iran arms sale [WP 11/19]. Turkey allows Syrian intelligence agent implicated in assassination of a Jordanian diplomat in Ankara to leave the country quietly [IN 11/22].

Arab World: Rival PLO factions unite to defend the Burj al-Barajinah refugee camp against Shi'i forces. Eight are killed, 38 wounded in the fighting near Beirut. The Lebanese pound hits a record low against foreign currencies [WT, NYT 11/20].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli authorities drop distribution of Arabic daily al-Fajr for seven days for censorship violations (JP, FBIS 10/2). Jerusalem Post reports occupation authorities in West Bank are blocking distribution of new Arabic evening paper for territories, al-Masa', wanting paper to take a pro-Jordanian editorial line. Publisher Mahmud Abu Zuluf says paper is independent (JP 10/1).

Other Countries: U.S. Sec. of State Shultz meets Syrian F.M. Faruq al-Shar' in New York to discuss Syrian help in releasing U.S. hostages in Lebanon; al-Shar' in UN speech reiterates Syrian denials of involvement in terrorism and declares readiness to assist international efforts against terrorism (WP 10/2).

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Birzeit University administration and employees reach agreement, end strike (FJ 9/12). Poll in West Bank and Gaza conducted by Newsday (US), al-Fajr, and Australian Broadcasting Corp. shows 93 percent of Palestinians favor PLO, while 78 percent favor "acts of force" in pursuit of Palestinian cause (NYT 9/9; WP 9/9). Israeli military censor threatens action against al-Fajr for not submitting poll results for censorship (FJ 9/12).

Other Countries: Turkey upgrades rank of its envoy to Israel. New representative is now ambassador in Turkish Foreign Ministry. In Paris, bomb explodes in post office at city hall, kills one, and injures 19; "Committee of Solidarity with Arab and Middle Eastern Political Prisoners" claims responsibility. Group wants suspected terrorists released from French jails, including Georges Ibrahim 'Abdallah, under investigation for assassination of U.S. military attache in 1982 (WP 9/9).

Arab World: Al-Fajr reports 5 major PLO factions (Fateh, DFLP, the Palestinian Communist party, the Arab Liberation Front, and the Palestine Liberation Front) recently agreed in Tunis to convene the PNC within 45 days [FJ 8/8].

Arab World: Car bomb explodes in West Beirut, kills 17, wounds over 50 [WP 8/9].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli civil administration bans distribution of al-Fajr for three days for violations of censorship [JP 6/20]. Al-Fajr reports Israel continues to detain Musa Mahmud Daramneh although he has completed his 15.5-year sentence for infiltration and Fateh membership; Israel wants to deport him but Jordan has refused to accept him [FJ 6/20].

Other Countries: 2 French hostages released in Beirut.

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Al-Fajr reports Jordan has blacklisted 34 West Bank journalists and given orders for their detention if they enter Jordan. Press agencies and newspapers that criticize Jordan's PLO policy are to be boycotted. Ban affects al-Fajr, al-Quds, and al-Mithaq [FJ 6/13].

Arab World: Muslim religious and political leaders meet in Damascus with Syrian V. P. Khaddam; reach agreement on Lebanese security; extend Lebanese law to Palestinian camps.

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Some hundred Jewish extremists are arrested by Israeli police while trying to reach al-Aqsa Mosque during demonstration by nearly 10,000 celebrating the 19th anniversary of the "reunification of Jerusalem" [AFP 6/6]. According to Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics, "united Jerusalem" now has 460,000 inhabitants, including 331,000 Jews (71.5%). Al-Fajr reports that 2 released members of the Israeli settler underground have been reinstated into the army reserves and given duty [FJ 6/6]. Al-Fajr reports MK Abba Eban told dovish members of Knesset he recently met with PLO officials while in the U.S., that he believes there can be no peace without the participation of the PLO [FJ 6/6].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Defense Minister Rabin, in Knesset, says Wald report on condition of IDF distorts army's ability and performance [FT 5/21]. Colonel Emanuel Wald, former head of IDF planning, had accused the army on Israel TV of having buried his 700-page report on IDF weaknesses. Four men and 2 women, all of Nablus, are indicted by military court for kidnap-murder of Israeli soldier David Manos and membership in Fateh. Ibrahim 'Abdallah of Dayr Ballut is named ringleader [JP, JTA 5/21]. Italian Foreign Minister Andreotti meets deposed Hebron Deputy Mayor Mustafa Natshah, Gaza lawyer Fayez Abu Rahmah, deposed Gaza Mayor Rashad al-Shawwa, and al-Fajr editor Hanna Siniora [FJ 5/23].

Arab World: King Hussein orders arrest of leadership of Jordanian Communist party [NYT 5/21].

Arab World: In suburban Beirut, Amal militiamen fight Palestinians for control of Burj al-Burajinah refugee camp, killing 2 and wounding 33. (Camp population: 11,000) [CSM 5/21].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Herut party convention ends in chaos and intra-party violence; no new party chairman is named [JTA 3/13; NYT 3/14]. Foreign Ministry expresses official dissatisfaction with Egypt's report on Ras Burqa massacre [JP 3/14].

Other Countries: Hanna Siniora, editor of al-Fajr newspaper, states during visit to Washington, D.C. he is exploring possibility of an international conference without preconditions, in which individual Palestinians would be part of a single Arab delegation [JTA 3/13]. Pakistani Pres. Zia al-Haq urges PLO to recognize Israel's right to exist, supports peace plans put forward by King Fahd and King Hussein UP 3/14]. U.S. Asst. Sec. of State Richard Murphy ends visit to Tunis, Cairo, and Jerusalem with no significant progress made [JP 3/14].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israel deports 2 more Palestinians to Jordan: 'Adnan Ghanim and A. 'Abd al-Majid Radad, both West Bankers released in the 5/20/85 prisoner exchange. Ghanim was brutally tortured during his detention since 12/22/85, suffering severe head injury [FJ 2/14]. Peres proposes "devolution" of local, municipal affairs into hands of occupied territories residents states he is not advocating "unilateral autonomy" [JP 2/11]. Israelis, Palestinian leaders in occupied territories reject unilateral autonomy [MG, JP 2/11].

Arab World: Jerusalem Post reports 2 leading Palestinian diaspora leaders, Prof. Walid al-Khalidi, of Harvard University, and Hassib al-Sabbagh, Geneva-based financier, visited Amman last week to participate in negotiations between King Hussein, Yasir Arafat [JP 2/10]. Al-Fajr editor Hanna Siniora and Gaza lawyer Fayiz Abu Rahmah also participated in negotiations between Wat Cluverius and Yasir Arafat [JTA 2/10].

Other Countries: Newsweek reports U.S. 6th Fleet jets have secretly been practicing precision attacks in the Negev desert for over 3 months [NWK 2/10].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Al-Fajr reports administrative detainee 'Adnan Ghanim has been severely tortured in Gaza prison since his 12/22/85 arrest, appears to have suffered brain damage; Committee Against the Iron Fist has adopted the case [FJ 1/24].

Arab World: Al-Fajr reports Committee in Defense of Democratic Freedom in Jordan this week demanded release of Palestinian writer Hamadah Rami, arrested 1/13; Rami belongs to the Palestinian Writers and Journalists Union, is a member of the PLO's High Council on Education, Culture, and Science [FJ 1/24]. Arab Organization of Human Rights also protested recent crackdown on joumalists, writers, unionists, PNC members in Jordan, demanded release of detainees [FJ 1/24]. Elie Hubayqa returns to Lebanon (9 days after being ousted) to lead Syrian-backed campaign against Pres. Amin Jumayyil [NYT 1/25]. Syrian-backed forces continue to fight Jumayyil's forces [NYT 1/25].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Al-Fajr reports 30 West Bank residents have been arrested over past weeks in connection with land fraud investigation [FJ 1/17].

Arab World: W. German Nazi-hunter Beate Klarsfeld arrives in W. Beirut, offers to substitute herself for 5 missing Lebanese Jews held hostage by Shi'ite Organization of the Oppressed of the Earth until SLA, Israel release Shi'ite prisoners from Khiam detention center in S. Lebanon [JP 1/19].

Other Countries: U.S. Asst. Sec. of State Richard Murphy leaves for London for meetings with King Hussein, later with P.M. Peres [LAT 1/18; NYT 1/19]. Occupied Palestine/Israel: Jerusalem Post reports nearly 2 dozen Nablus Palestinians have been detained, questioned for 2 weeks without charges on suspicion of involvement in land fraud scandal [JP 1/10]. Al-Fajr reports Israel's Land Administration and Green Patrol uprooted 6,000 olive and almond trees near Qattaneh village in past week; villagers are appealing to High Court for compensation [FJ 1/10].

Other Countries: British P.M. Thatcher states retaliatory or preemptive strikes to punish or prevent terrorism are "against international law" and a policy which could lead to "much greater chaos" [WP, LAT 1/11]. Jewish Week reports Jerry Falwell's new group, the Liberty Federation, advocates strong support for Israel, moving U.S. embassy to Jerusalem [JW 1/10]. W. German Interior Minister Karl Blecha states 2 forged passports used in Rome and Vienna airport attacks were taken from Tunisian workers in Libya last year [MG 1/11].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Al-Fajr reports Iraeli troops destroyed or sealed homes of 10 Bethlehem and Hebron families in past week because members of the families were arrested on charges of membership in the PLO; none of the detainees had been tried [FJ 1/3]. Phone caller claims responsibility for 1/2 murder of Israeli taxi driver on behalf of Fateh's Force 17, states driver was Mossad agent [LT 1/4].

Arab World: Al-Fajr reports Jordan will permit daughter of Nablus Mayor Bassam Shaka'a to travel only one-way into the West Bank from Amman; she is refusing the condition [FJ 1/3].
