In Kafr Kanna, close to 6,000 chant slogans, march in streets. In Rahat, in Negev, several hundred rally. Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Dayr Abu Mash'al, near Ramallah, villagers use rocks, bottles, iron bars, and axes to attack soldiers searching for alleged attackers; soldiers open fire, wounding 4, 1 of whom bleeds to death. In Hebron-area village of Shuyukh, troops open fire on Palestinian protesters blocking roads, throwing stones; at least 5 Palestinians are wounded by gunfire. Israel reports 2 other Palestinians killed in W. Bank, 1 in Yamun village and 1 in Burqa, village near Nablus; army also says 45 W. Bank Palestinians are injured (30 from live ammunition and 15 by tear gas or beatings) and 15 Gaza Strip refugees are injured by tear gas or beatings [WP 3/31]. Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Israeli television interview, Def. Min. Rabin reveals more than 1,000 Palestinian activists have been arrested in past week, bringing total number of Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons to at least 4,400 [WP 3/30; LAT 4/1].

Other Countries: Richard Schifter, U.S. asst. sec. of state for human rights and humanitarian affairs, defends Irael's use of force in occupied territories. Amnesty International cls on Israel to insure Palestinian human rights during 3-day sealing off of territories [WP 3/30].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Army reports violent clash between soldiers and Palestinians in village of Zaytand Tulkarm; about 20 Palestinians are injured by live ammunition, rubber bullets, and tear gas [WP 3/30; FJ 4/3]. Charges were reduced from aggravated assault [FJ 3/20]. Trial opens in Jaffa of 2 soldiers and their superior officer in connection with 2/24 beating of 2 Palestinians that was filmed by CBS camera crew. Soldiers plead not guilty to assault charges; 2 others have already been convicted in connection with incident [WP, NYT 3/18]. Israeli is shot, wounded in legs near Gaza Strip's Jabalya camp. Curfew is imposed after attack [NYT 3/18]. In Ramallah, Israeli officials destroy olive grove along road where Jewish settlers' bus was bumed in firebomb attack [NYT 3/18; FJ 3/20]. Israeli authorities close shops and markets in Jericho; shops remain closed in Nablus, Jenin, and Tulkarm [FJ 3/20].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In effort to break strike in occupied territories, soldiers order shops closed until noon and opened in afternoon [WP, NYT 3/18]. In Am'ari camp, demonstration erupts during funeral of Palestinian who died 3/16 from tear gas; 6 are injured in subsequent clash with Israeli troops. Qalqiliyyah, 'Azzun, and Jalazun camps are under curfew [FJ 3/20].

Arab World: IDF fighter planes raid DFLP base near Beirut; Palestinian fighter is killed [WP 3/18].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israel bans travel by Palestinian residents between W. Bank and Gaza Strip and bars fuel shipments to Arab-owned stations for 3d day. Palestinians begin 2-day general strike, shutting down almost all of W. Bank, most of Gaza Strip. Israel cuts W. Bank's and Gaza Strip's international phone connections. IDF closes produce markets in Jenin and Jericho. Reports indicate Israel has cut electricity and telephone lines in Qabatiyyah and forbidden residents to travel to Jordan. IDF announces sentencing of 2 soldiers involved in beating of Palestinians that was filmed by U.S. network; 1 is sentenced to 21 days imprisonment, the other to 10 days. Army also announces that U. S. photographer has been charged with participating in rock-throwing demonstration [WP 3/16].

Other Countries: Sec. of State Shultz and P.M. Shamir fail to reach agreement on Middle East peace plan during meetings in Washington [NYT 3/16].

Military Action Occupied Palestine/Israel: Plestinian is shot dead during clash with soldiers in Ramallah-area village of Dayr Jarir [WP, NYT 3/16]. Another Palestinian is reported killed by army gunfire in Anza village, near Jenin [FJ 3/20]. At least 4 Palestinians are wounded by troops trying to disperse demonstrations in Qalqiliyyah [WP 3/16]. In Jaba village near Nablus, Palestinian is shot dead by soldiers [NYT 3/16]. Soldiers shoot, wound 5 villagers in 'Azzun. Daylong demonstrations are reported in Nablus and surrounding villages and camps. In Qalqiliyyah, Palestinian protesters block roads, bum tires, and stone military vehicles; soldiers close off city, impose curfew. At least 9 are wounded by army gunfire [FJ 3/20].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israel places Gaza Strip under nightly curfew, restricting residents to homes and closing borders from 10 pm to 3 am until further notice; curfew does not apply to Jewish settlers. In response to call from Unified National Command of the Uprising, 200 Gaza policemen resign. In W. Bank, soldiers close Jericho produce market [WP 3/15]. Reports indicate 19 Israeli-appointed village league members from W. Bank have quit recently [CSM 3/14].

Other Countries: P.M. Shamir arrives in Washington, D. C. In speech before United Jewish Appeal Young Leadership Conference, P.M. Shamir says he will introduce "new ideas" to change Sec. of State Shultz's peace plan. U.S. declares plan will not be altered. Shamir holds talks with 3 U.S. senators and meets briefly with Sec. of State Shultz and Sec. of Def. Frank Carlucci [WP, NYT 3/15].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In al-Birah, Israeli soldiers intervene after confrontation between Jewish settlers and two residents; Palestinian child is badly wounded by rubber bullet. In Jenin and nearby village of Yamun, 11 residents are shot, wounded by army gunfire; 9 of wounded are shot while attacking home of collaborator [WP 3/15]. Yamun is ordered under curfew. Authorities erect 50m-long fence in front of Tulkarm camp. Demonstrations continue in Jenin and Jenin refugee camp. In Dhahriyyah village in Hebron district, at least 4 villagers are injured during army raid. Solders said 'Isawiyyah village in Jerusalem district during the night. Several clashes are reported in Ramallah and area villages, including large demonstration in Am'ari camp and 400 Birzeit U. students and faculty members [FJ 3/20].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Estimated 200,000-250,000 Israelis demonstrate in support of P.M. Shamir's rejection of U.S. peace proposals during rally organized by Gush Emunim [NYT 3/14; WJW 3/17]. Palestinian wounded by army gunfire in 3/11 clash in Biddu, near Ramallah, dies [NYT 3/14; FJ 3/20]. Israel responds to buming of 2 fuel trucks and stoning of others by cutting of gasoline supplies to Palestinian-owned service stations in occupied W. Bank. Police spokesman confirmed that more than half of the estimated 850 Palestinian policemen in the occupied territories have resigned. Military court indicts soldier from Givati brigade for manslaughter; soldier allegedly shot Palestinian who cursed him [WP 3/14]. In al-Birah, Israeli bus is destroyed in firebomb attack [FJ 3/20]. Sa'd Saftawi, head of a Gaza UNRWA school, is taken into administrative dtention [FJ 3/20]. Arab World: Reports indicate UNRWA has decided to resume some activities in northem Lebanon and Biqa' Valley [FJ 3/13].

Other Countries: Washington Post reports 1985 memo reveals Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese and E. Robert Wallach briefed then-P. M. Peres on plans for pipeline from Iraq to Jordan [WP 3/13].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Violent clashes are reported in Jenin; authorities close entrances to refugee camp and erect cement barrier at city's eastem entrance. At least 86 are injured in Gaza Strip demonstrations [FJ 3/20].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: On the W. Bank, hundreds of Palestinian policemen resign [WP 3/12]. In Tel Aviv 70 Knesset members deliver petition to U.S. ambassador Thomas Pickering, asking Pres. Reagan to pardon convicted spy Jonathan Pollard [LAT, WP 3/12]. Israeli bus is firebombed near Tulkarm [FJ 3/13]. In Bidiya village, Israeli authorities demolish 3 houses whose owners are accused of attempting to kill collaborator. House in Hebron is demolished; owner is charged with killing Israeli in Jerusalem in October 1987 [FJ 3/13]. Israel bans exports to Jordan from Qabatiyyah [FJ 3/13]. Police arrest 40 Palestinians from inside green line in connection with demonstrations during which stones and bottles were thrown and Palestinian flags raised [FJ 3/13].

Arab World: Egypt's Pres. Husni Mubarak and Jordan's King Hussein hold talks in Cairo, voice optimism on Shultz plan [WP 3/14].
