Occupied Palestine/Israel: Palestinian Heritage Week festival exhibit destroyed in Bir Zeit U. fire; arson suspected. Israeli army denies any involvement in Ain al-Hilweh, S. Lebanon incidents (5/17/84).

Arab World: Muslim leaders march through Sabra refugee camp, protesting murder of Ain al-Hilweh refugees by Israeli-backed militia. Lebanon's PM Karami calls for united Lebanese effort to end Israeli occupation of S. Lebanon. Large rally held in Baalbek for Shi'ite soldiers, incuding Irani Revolutionary Guard. Thousands of Druze in Israeli-occupied Golan mark 40th anniversary of death of Nur al-Din Kanj Abu Salah, waving Syrian flags and shouting slogans of allegiance to Syria.

Other Countries: UN Security Council hears PLO complaint of Israeli attacks on S. Lebanon refugee camps in closed-door session. UNRWA spokesman in Vienna reports 1 killed, 20 injured in Israeli military operations in S. Lebanon refugee camp. Washington Post reports CIA director Casey allowed Israel access to sensitive satellite photographs. Pentagon officials confirm US & Israel working toward defense pact. Yeshiva U. Talmudic law prof. Rabbi Tendler decries arrests of Jewish terrorists and calls US Jews to their defense, claiming "a Jew . . . respects human life as no one else does." Occupied Palestine/Israel: At news conference, Sheikh Saad al-Din al-Alami urges authorities to remove Israeli guards from al-Haram al-Sharif as they cannot offer security of the shrines in light of latest Israeli sabotage attempts.

Military Action:

Arab World: Just after midnight, IDF troops storm Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp near Sidon with tanks and armored vehicles, set off explosion, wound 20 residents, demolish 8 to 20 homes, shoot 2 residents, arrest about 150 people. Lebanese Nationalist commandos attack Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army near Yater village, 1 SLA soldier killed, 1 wounded.

Other Countries: Confirming longstanding Iraqi claims, MK Sharon tells Connecticut synogogue audience Israel has been supplying Iran arms with US knowledge.

Social/Economic/Political:

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Justice Minister Nissim asks cabinet to reconsider approval (5/11/84) of 2 new settlements (Neriya & Yaarit) as legal expropriation papers in dispute. Rakah councilor Karkaby protests Haifa housing discrimination, denying Arab newlyweds access to apartments reserved for young couples. Central Bureau of Statistics announces April inflation rate of 20.6, auguring 406%o inflation rate for 1984. Candidate Rabin pledges Alignment gov't. could withdraw IDF from Lebanon within 6 mos., thus saving $200-250 million yearly.

Arab World: PFLP, DFLP, Palestine Communist Party & Fateh representatives meet in Algiers to form unified stand before next PNC meeting. Egyptian Afro-Asian Solidarity Committee holds conference on "Solidarity with the Palestinian People" in Cairo. In interview with Akher Sa'a, Egypt's Dep. FM Ghali calls for new Arab League that will recognize and cooperate with Israel. Residents of Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp demonstrate against Israeli occupation.

Other Countries: US gov't. turns over files to Israel on completed and pending cases of Nazis and pro-Nazis living in US.

Arab World: IDF patrol vehicle hit by remote-control explosive device near al-Ghaziya village, S. Lebanon.

Arab World: Haaretz reports 1/3 [$16 million of $49 million] of Israel's fresh vegetable exports sent to Lebanon by Agrexco.

Other Countries: Koteret Rashit publishes Tel Aviv U. Institute of Strategic Studies' report findings that Israel recently sold arms to Iran, Malaysia, Indonesia and Morocco.

Military Action:

Arab World: Israeli-appointed Gen. Antoine Lahad officially replaces Saad Haddad as head of S. Lebanon Army. Limited exchanges of fire between Israeli and Syrian positions in Beqaa Valley reported. Lebanese National Resistance Forces strike IDF vehicle on Ghassaniyaal-Kawassariya road. IDF sets up checkpoints at approaches to Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp; shoot and wound 2 passengers in car approaching checkpoint. Israeli border policeman injured in grenade attack on IDF patrol in central Sidon.

[Israeli leftists meeting Arafat not to be prosecuted; Meridor affirms that laws applying to residents of occupied territories are different.] Gush Etzion Regional Council initiates new settlement Eruvin (near Ain Arube and Arube refugee camp); Palestinian residents protest over 6 dunums of their land expropriated for road to settlement.

Military Action:

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Masked Israeli men ambush bus carrying 60 laborers and students from al-Mizra'a al-Sharqiya to Jerusalem, injuring 7; Shlomo Ben-Yosef Brigade of "TNT" claims responsibility.

Arab World: 15 IDF soldiers wounded, 1 Lebanese civilian killed in explosions at Sidon port; IDF closes area. 4 Israelis wounded in bazooka attack on personnel carrier at Baalul near Karoun Lake.

SOCIAL/POLITICAL:

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Representatives from UNRWA and 17 West Bank refugee camps meet in Aqbat Jabr camp near Jericho to discuss youth programs.

Other Countries: Spain's Dep. PM Guerra dispels speculation of possible diplomatic relations with Israel; says conditions for relations include Israel's guaranteed borders, withdrawal from Lebanon and recognition of Palestinian rights to homeland. Britain proposes 50-man UN force to monitor Beirut's "Green Line." Mubarak arrives in Paris for talks with Pres. Miterrand; leaders examine possible resurrection of UN Resolution 242 with amendment calling for mutual and simultaneous Israel-PLO recognition.

MILITARY ACTION:

Arab World: Red Cross 707 with urgent medical supplies for Lebanese hospitals turned back from Beirut airport after Christian militia threatens to shoot it down. 6 Israeli Kfir jets attack Bhamdoun, Mansuriya and Baalchmay in Lebanon; at least 2 killed, several buildings damaged; Israel claims retaliation for Palestinian Katyusha attack on Metulla.

SOCIAL POLITICAL:

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli Dep. Cabinet Min. warns 50-100,000 Israelis may emigrate in 1984. Israeli police report material evidence links shooting of Nablus girls (12/8/83) to Yosef Harnoi (of Tel Aviv & Elon Moreh); Pinhas Mahrabi and Ephraim Segal as accomplices. 19th anniversary of establishment of PLO. Hanna Nakkara distinguished Palestinian advocate, well-known for his work in defense of Bedouin rights and against land confiscation, dies in Haifa.

MILITARY ACTION:

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Rida Hashem Zeid Keelani of Jenin shot dead by Israeli patrol at Jalazoun refugee camp for failing to stop for identity check; occupation authorities force family to bury body at night to avoid attention; IDF later announces victim listed as suspected terrorist. Central Nablus placed under curfew after petrol bomb attack on IDF foot patrol; later, petrol bomb hurled at patrol in Balata refugee camp; petrol bomb attack reported in Jabaliya refugee camp in Gaza Strip.
