Islamic Jihad mbr. Anwar Aziz hijacks ambulance btwn. Bayt Lahiya and Jabaliya camp, Gaza Strip, for suicide-bomb attack. Israeli cabinet agrees to equal funding of Arab, Jewish municipalities following 10- day sit-in by Arab mayors. Mayors indicate they will take their protest to the Israeli labor federation, the Histadrut, to protest unfair practices by that body, which is dominated by the Labor party. (MEM 8/27)

Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq issues report on increased Jewish settlement in o.t. Places number of settlers in W. Bank, Gaza at 104,000 along with 127,700 in E. Jerusalem. (MEM 8/27)

Soviet, Ethiopian Jewish immigrants clash in Jerusalem hotel where they live; four injured. Soviets have complained of preferential treatment extended to Ethiopians. (MEM 8/27, 8/29)

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Nablus, 2 Palestinians are killed by army gunfire. Clashes are reported in Gaza Strip's Beach camp [WP 2/11]. Military lifts 10-day-old curfew on Nablus and 4-day-old curfew on Shu'fat camp in E. Jerusalem [NYT 2/11]. Curfews are also lifted for 'A'idah, Balatah, new and old 'Askar, Beach, and Burayj camps and village of Bani Na'im. Curfews continue in Qalqiliyyah, Tulkarm, Bayt 'Ur al-Tahta, and Bayt Ummar. Jericho is placed under siege. Demonstrators throw stones, burn tires in Nablus, Silwan, Beach camp, Dayr al-Balah, Burayj camp, Rafah, and E. Jerusalem [FJ 2/14].
