In addition, Fatah enforces general strikes in Bethlehem, Nablus to protest the PA's 10/25 raid on its Ramallah office. 100,000s of Palestinians across the West Bank, Gaza, Jerusalem turn out for 2-minute moment of silence, nonviolent "March of 1 Million" to mark 50 yrs. of dispossession (known as al-Nakba). Marches in several areas (including, Bethlehem, Gaza, Hebron, Jericho, Jerusalem, Jinin, Nablus, Ramallah) devolve into clashes with IDF, which fires live ammunition, rubber bullets, killing 5 Palestinians, wounding 200-400, making this the worst day of violence in the territories since 9/25/96. 20 Israeli soldiers, policemen and 2 civilians are also injured. Nearly 2 wks. after the 7/30 bombings, Israel is still unable to identify the bombers. While some Israeli news reports claim that unnamed government officials have determined that the bombers were Palestinians fr. Nablus or Surif, other unnamed Israeli, PA officials claim that several indicators (the labels on the bombers clothing had been cut off, their finger prints are not on file, their bombs left no chemical residue, they carried Jordanian dinars) suggest that the bombers came fr. abroad, perhaps fr. Lebanon. Lebanese FM Faris Buwayz says that Israel is propagating these rumors to justify its recent intensification of attacks on Lebanon. Israel eases the "inner closure" to allow Palestinian movement btwn. Janin, Qalqilya, Tulkarm. Bethlehem, H1 in Hebron, Ramallah are still sealed. Palestinians are permitted to cross the border into Jordan, but the overall ban on Palestinians entering Israel remains in effect. (WT 8/10, 8/13)

Arab World: In Baghdad PLO spokesman announces emergency session of Palestine National Council will be held to discuss King Hussein's surrendering of sovereignty over the W. Bank [WP 8/3]. Jordanian interior minister Raja'i Dajani says it is too early to comment on effects of King's move on administration of West Bank [WP 8/3].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Nablus troops kill 18-year-old Palestinian, wound 2 more [WP 8/3, FJ 8/7]. In Kafr Thulth 100 olive trees are destroyed. Tear gas is used to break up riots in Bethlehem and Beach camp. Clashes also occur in Burayj, Jabalya, Qalqiliyyah camps [FJ 8/7]. Arab World: Lebanese fighters attack South Lebanon Army position killing 1 SLA fighter [FJ 8/7].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Japanese F.M. Uno visits Israel; pledges $500,000 for Palestinian projects [NYT 6/27]. Israeli authorities order 14 Nablus-area schools closed until 6/30 [FJ 7/3].

Military

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Army troops destroy 2nd floor of Gaza City home [FJ 7/3]. The army surrounds churches in Bethlehem and Bayt Sahur fearing demonstrations following Sunday services [FJ 7/3]. In Jaffa fire destroys part of Bassam, Bek Mosque; Muslim leaders believe the fire was deliberately started by Jewish extremists [FJ 7/3].

Arab World: IDF and South Lebanon Army sweep through S. Lebanon searching for resistance fighters; come within 5 miles of the Syrian lines [FJ 7/3].

Arab World: Arafat deputy Salah Khalaf (Abu Iyad) states Cairo Declaration means PLO retains right to use violence in all territories occupied by Israel, including Israel proper [FT 11/12].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Palestinian is killed when bomb he is making explodes in his hands; military refuse to release name of victim, from Nakhlin village near Bethlehem [NYT 11/12]. Palestinian student, 17, is shot and wounded in confrontation with Israeli settler after students stone his car in Nablus; Israeli military close Qadri Tuqan school in Nablus and arrest 17 Palestinian students [NYT 11/12; JTA 11/13].

Other Countries: Newsweek reports combined unit of Israeli and SLA troops last week forced their way through Norwegian UNIFIL roadblock, exchanged gunfire and seized a jeep and machine gun. Norway filed an official protest with Israeli ambassador in Oslo, sent fact-finding team to Israel to investigate [NWK 11/11].
