In the West Bank, Israeli settlers built a structure in the Homesh settlement outpost with approval from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Israeli settlers also set fire to palm trees in Burqa, near the Homesh outpost. Israeli forces shot and killed 1 Palestinian intelligence officer and injured 8 others during a late-night raid in Jenin. Israeli forces also demolished 1 house in Artas and 1 in Jericho. Elsewhere, Israeli forces seized a tractor and construction tools in Beitunia. 12 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Tammun, Jenin, Nablus, and Dura. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian was arrested during a late-night raid in Bayt Hanina. PLO secretary-general Hussein al-Sheikh met with EU representative to Palestine Sven Kühn von Burgsdorff in Ramallah, calling on the EU to pressure Israel to end unilateral measures. (WAFA 5/29)

The U.S., UK, and EU criticized the Israel decision to allow Israeli settlers to build a new structure at the Homesh settlement outpost and to allow settlers a permanent presence there. The U.S. said it was “deeply troubled” and that it “violates Israel’s commitment to the Biden administration.” The UK urged Israel to “honor recent commitments made in Aqaba and Sharm El-Sheikh.” (HA 5/30; MDW 6/1)

At a cabinet meeting, Israeli justice minister Yariv Levin defended his position that the government needs more control over the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court, saying “Arabs buy apartments in Jewish communities in the Galilee and this is causing Jews to leave these areas because they don’t want to live with Arabs,” noting that judges should understand that. The Israeli military said it had successfully tested the C-Dome, a naval version of the Iron Dome system. (HA 5/29)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces raided al-Ibrahimi Mosque and prevented Muslim worshippers from entering the mosque. Israeli forces also sealed the entrance to Nabi Saleh. Elsewhere, Israeli forces dismantled and seized 2 residential structures in al-Muarajat, displacing 12. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Hebron, injuring 1 with a rubber-coated bullet. 9 Palestinians were arrested, including 8 during late-night raids in Sa‘ir, Yatta, as-Samu, and Tell; 1 was arrested at a checkpoint near Nablus. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers toured the Haram al-Sharif compound. 1 Palestinian stabbed and injured 1 Israeli soldier and 1 Israeli settler while being arrested in relation to a car-torching incident in Ras al-Amud. In Gaza, 2 Palestinians were arrested in the vicinity of the Gaza fence. In Israel, 1 Palestinian citizen of Israel was attacked by 4 Israeli Jewish people, who yelled “death to Arabs,” used pepper spray through the window of his vehicle, and vandalized his vehicle in Beersheba. The man was placed in house arrest after receiving treatment at a hospital, despite a judge saying that the Palestinian man was clearly attacked 1st by the Israelis. Israel said it had arrested 2 Palestinian men in the Galilee region for allegedly working with Hezbollah. (HA 3/20)

A Jewish vigilante militia set up by a former Israeli police officer was formally launched in the Naqab desert. The militia, The Barel Rangers, says it will patrol the Naqab to protect Jewish residents against Palestinian attacks. (AJ 3/24; MEE 3/26)

Occupied Palestine/lIsrael: Police discover huge cache of weapons, including 107 grenades, 80 loaded magazines, mines, anti-tank bazooka shells and several dozen kilos of explosives in evacuated Palestinian village of Lifta near Jerusalem; suspected to be linked with "TNT" cells. MK Tsaban's motion to establish a committee of inquiry into the invasion of Lebanon defeated in Knesset vote (42-33). PM Shamir accuses Egypt of "tretreating from the Camp David framework, " citing Egypt's failure to return its ambassador to Israel. Occupied Palestine/Israel: 3 Palestinian workers shot for not stopping at Gaza checkpoint while driving to work in Israel. About 30 Birkat Avraham yeshiva students go on rampage armed with iron rods, smashing windows, injuring 2 Arab men; 3 Arabs and 2 Jews arrested and released. IDF uproots five dunums of fruit trees belonging to Palestinian farmers along Kfar Saba-Qalqilya road where IDF believes petrol bomb attacks on Israeli traffic launched; farmers not to be compensated and ordered not to replant.

Arab World: Heavy artillery exchanges in Tripoli between rival Palestinian forces as talks on evacuation of loyalists stall. Bazooka attack on Israeli army vehicle kills 1 IDF soldier in Lebanon.

Syrian planes fire 2 air-to-air missiles at Israeli jets on reconnaissance flight over northern Lebanon, no hits reported; Israelis deny Lebanese report that pilotless drone plane was shot down over Bekaa by SA-6 missiles, say that reconnaissance flights will continue; Phalange and Druze militias exchange fire south of Beirut.

Casualties:

1 IDF soldier killed, 14 injured when explosion damages troop bus in eastern Lebanon; Lebanese military prosecutor demands death penalty for pro-Iranian Lebanese Shiites charged with killing 6 Lebanese Army soldiers in March.
