Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the UN General Assembly, saying Saudi normalization will “enhance the prospects of peace with the Palestinians,” while displaying a map depicting the new Middle East after normalization that omitted the West Bank or Gaza. In East Jerusalem, Israeli authorities forced 1 Palestinian family to demolish their own home in Jabel Mukaber, displacing 7. The Palestinian Prisoner’s Club said Israel released Khalil Awawda from the Ofer prison. Israel promised to release Awawda from administrative detention in October 2022 after he went on a 172-day hunger strike but went back on its promise, claiming he had smuggled a phone. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers set fire to Palestinian crops in al-Twana in the Masafer Yatta area. Israeli forces shot and injured 2 Palestinians with baton rounds during a raid in Burin; others suffered tear-gas related injuries. An Israeli soldier was filmed vandalizing a Palestinian car, including breaking 1 window, in Qaryut. Australia, Canada, and the UK issued a joint statement calling on Israel to reverse its decision to expand Israeli settlements, including the advancement of more than 5,000 new settlement units on 6/26, and to shorten the process for approving new settlement units. (REU 6/30; AJ, WAFA 7/1)

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) updated its list of businesses involved in Israeli West Bank settlements, removing 15 business that were included in the 2020 list. The members of UNESCO voted to readmit the U.S. to the organization after the Trump administration left UNESCO in 2017, citing alleged anti-Israel bias. Palestine was 1 of 10 members to vote against the U.S. readmission. (ALM 6/30; ALM 7/2)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers with a military escort attacked Palestinians at a water spring in Qaryut, leading to tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Beita and Bayt Dajan, injuring 14 with tear gas. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinians protesting in Beit Umar, causing tear-gas related injuries. Meanwhile, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 3 Palestinians with baton rounds and others with tear gas. Israeli forces also raided Tulkarm, detonating an explosive at a carpentry shop and causing it to burn down. 10 Palestinians were arrested during raids in Tulkarm, Sanur, and al-Mughayyir. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers gathered at the entrances to the Haram al-Sharif compound, attacking Palestinians and their property and chanting provocations at Muslim worshippers for the second day in a row. At the 32nd Arab Summit in Jeddah, Syrian president Bashar al-Assad attended for the first time since Syria was suspended from the Arab League in 2011. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy also attended. UNRWA commissioner-general Philippe Lazzarini addressed the attendees, calling on the Arab states to increase their funding for the agency. The Arab states affirmed the centrality of the Palestinian cause to the Arab League in its final communique. Malaysian authorities freed a Palestinian man who had been abducted, allegedly by Malaysian nationals working for Israel and trained by the Mossad in Europe. The alleged agents were arrested. 80 Democrats in the U.S. Congress, led by David Price (D-NC), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Jennifer Wexton (D-VA), and Joaquin Castro (D-TX), wrote a letter to secretary of state Antony Blinken urging the Biden administration to take action against efforts to undermine the 2-state solution. The Democrats mentioned 5 issues of concern, including settler violence and non-intervention by Israeli forces, settlement expansion, demolitions, increased funding for West Bank settlements, and the PA program for paying stipends to Palestinian prisoners. In Iran, colonel Ali Esmailzadeh of the Quds Force died in an incident at his home in Karaj. Iran denied that Esmailzadeh was assassinated. Local reporting said Esmailzadeh fell from the roof or a balcony at his home. Esmailzadeh’s death follows an incident on 5/22 in which another Iranian colonel was assassinated and an incident on 5/25 in which an Iranian scientist was killed in a drone strike. Both of those incidents were reportedly linked to Israel. Hamas, the PA, Jordan, Morocco, UAE, Bahrain, the United Arab List, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation condemned the Israeli-led violence at the Haram al-Sharif compound (see above). The U.S. state department released a statement urging “all sides to exercise restraint, avoid provocative actions and rhetoric, and preserve the historic status quo on the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount.” The spokesperson for UN secretary general António Guterres expressed grave concern about the situation in Jerusalem. At a Passover seder hosted by U.S. vice president Kamala Harris and 2nd gentleman Doug Emhoff, the couple served wine made by the settler winery Psagot Winery in the West Bank.
