SOCIAL/POLITICAL:

Arab World: General strike called in Majd al-Shams (Golan) protesting Israeli occupation of Lebanon and US interference in Lebanese affairs.

Other Countries: Hungarian state business representatives meet with Israeli businessmen in Jerusalem; in absence of diplomatic relations, talks remain on private level. Soviet delegation informs US Security Council that USSR will not approve UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon until US, British, French and Italian MNF withdraw permanently.

MILITARY ACTION:

Arab World: IDF soldiers wounded by mine explosion on road to Nabatiya.

Other Countries: 50 members of US Druze community demonstrate at State Dep't. against US policy in Lebanon. FM Kimche ends 4-day official visit to Singapore.

SOCIAL/POLITICAL:

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Encouraged by US urging to restore Egypt-Israel relations, Shafi Abdul Hamid received by Shamir. [Hamid is first ranking Egyptian diplomat to visit Israel since invasion of Lebanon.] On eve of cabinet mtg. over austerity measures, PM Shamir calls emergency mtg. for Herut members of Cabinet in unity attempt.

Arab World: Sidon port on general strike in response to Israel's occupation, recent killing of 3 and arrest of 2 local citizens. Aides in Sana'a, YAR announce Arafat approves military plan for future PLO action.

Other Countries: 13 retired US generals and admirals return from visit to Israel sponsored by B'nai Brith.

SOCIAL/POLITICAL:

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In proposal to curb public spending, Finance Minister Yigal Cohen-Orgad proposes freeze on further Israeli settlements; Peace Now hails plan; rightwing Tehiya Party threatens to pull out of coalition if plan approved. Haaretz publishes poll indicating 48.5% Israeli respondents oppose more settlements on West Bank; 26.9% favor. General strike in Eilat sees 5,000 residents demonstrate against closure of Timma Copper Works and general economic distress. Striking postal workers ordered back to work. Abed Abu Diab, Jerusalem unionist and consultant to Jerusalem Electric Co., gets 5th renewal of 6-month town arrest order.

MILITARY ACTION:

Arab World: 1 Israeli soldier killed and 2 wounded in ambush on IDF border patrol in Jezzine, S. Lebanon. 

SOCIAL POLITICAL:

Occupied Palestine/Israel: 24-day dock workers' strike ends with workers accepting 25% pay increase, but with higher work quotas and worker layoffs.

MILITARY ACTION:

Occupied Palestine/Israel: 3 Palestinian-owned cars set ablaze in E. Jerusalem; no response from fire dep't.; police respond after 45 mins.; Israeli vigilantes suspected.

Arab World: At least 2 killed by Israeli air raids in S. Lebanon. Israeli soldiers ransack mosque in Lebanese village of Aadlun, triggering religious pratests and general strike there.

Military Action:

Cease-fire reduces shelling in and around Beirut; 200 Marines of Alpha Company evacuate position near university school of science, move to base on 6th Fleet ships, 1400-1500 Marines remain onshore; heavy fighting continues around Baddawi, Arafat forces establish positions in Tripoli, area around Arafat's HQthere is shelled.

Casualties:

Amal reports 2 civilians killed, nearly 80 injured in recent fighting with LAF; Beirut airport reopens; general strike in South Lebanon to protest closing of Awali bridges, schools, shops in West Beirut closed in support.

Political Responses:

Palestinians/ Lebanese: Arafat meets mayor of Tripoli, other leaders, promises to do everything he can to avert all out fighting in city.

Arab Governments: Kuwait's parliament votes to halt $265 m. annual aid to Syria because of alleged support of PLO rebels; foreign ministers of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, North Yemen, Tunisia and Algeria fly to Damascus to consult Assad on PLO fighting.

US and Other Countries: Reagan Administration reportedly plans to establish closer political, economic, and strategic relations with Israel as keystone of Middle East policy, Eagleburger's visit last week to Israel laid groundwork; House approves foreign aid bill with largest sum ever for Israel, $2.61 b. in military and economic aid.

Military Action:

300 Marines arrive in Beirut to replace those killed in Sunday's bombing; IDF patrol attacked with grenades and automatic weapons near Tyre.

Casualties:

General strike and demonstrations in South Lebanon to protest killing of 3 civilians in Sarafand; revised figures in bombings are 214 US, 40 French killed, 20-30 US, unknown number of French missing; 2 IDF soldiers killed near Tyre, IDF fatalities in Lebanon now total 524.

Political Responses:

US and Other Countries: US Marine Commandant Kelley arrives in Beirut, says he is totally satisfied with security procedures at Marine base prior to Sunday's bombing; Senate Armed Services Committee, after closed session with Defense Secretary, considers Marines' security in Beirut inadequate; US military force invades Grenada.

Military Action:

Artillery fire between rival militias in Chouf mountains.

Casualties:

General strike in most Muslim-dominated areas of Lebanon marks first anniversary of Israeli invasion; demonstrations in Nabatieh and Rashidieh camp; one man killed in exchange of fire between townships south of Beirut; detainees at Ansar continue protest, burn 20 tents.

Political Responses:

Israel/ Occupied Territories: Labor Party calls for judicial inquiry into government's handling of Lebanon war; Deputy PM Ehrlich says Sharon gave inaccurate information to Cabinet to justify military operations.

Palestinians/ Lebanese: Fateh rebels want formation of provisional committee, election of new leaders; Arafat meets Saudi leaders in Jeddah; Habash seeks support for end to armed confrontations, settlement of Fateh dispute by Central Committee and senior PLO leaders; Lebanese FM travels to Washington for talks with Reagan, Shultz.

Palestinians/ Lebanese: President Gemayel reportedly tells Habib he will not compromise Lebanon's sovereignty by allowing Israeli troops to patrol and giving Haddad responsibility for security in South; Habib returns to Jerusalem; Druze leader Walid Jumblatt in Moscow for talks with Soviet officials.

Attacks against IDF in Bekaa valley and near Tyre; 200 IDF soldiers withdraw from one village in Chouf; Lebanese Army resumes house-to-house search in Ouzai and Burj al-Barajneh for protestors who assaulted troops Friday.

Casualties:

Two dozen Shiite protestors move into unfinished mosque in shanty town where 5 were killed; Army arrests 11, seizes weapons; ICRC announces repatriation of third Syrian soldier by Israel (was wounded during invasion); 5 IDF wounded in Bekaa and near Tyre.

Casualties:

ICRC estimates 293 bodies recovered to date in Shatila, still others buried in rubble of bulldozed homes and in mass grave 300 yards from IDF observation post.

Israel/ Occupied Territories: Sharon, testifying before parliament, says IDF coordinated entry of Phalangists into Shatila camp, let them pass through IDF lines around camp, fired flares to illuminate camp during massacre, says Gen.
