PLO claims responsibility [FJ 2/27]. Explosion destroys soldiers' hitchhiking station at entrance to new Jewish settlement town of Efrat, midway between Jerusalem and Hebron [JP 2/27]. At Jalazun refugee camp near Ramallah troops use tear gas to disperse protestors who had blocked roads, thrown stones. Merchants strike in Gaza City to protest continued detention of over 135 university students [FJ 2/27].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: New Israeli Attorney General Yosef Harish assumes office [BG 6/6]. Antioccupation protests mark anniversary of 1967 occupation: an Israeli settler in Nablus fired at and injured; the city put under curfew; a bomb in Jerusalem injures 2 Israeli women; a telephone caller claims responsibility for both actions on behalf of Fateh's Force 17; explosion in Afula causes no injuries; 2 petrol bombs hurled at Israeli buses in Janin, no injuries; demonstrators at Birzeit University raise the Palestinian flag and stone Israeli army troops, who respond with tear gas; 3 petrol bombs in Gaza are hurled at Israeli army vehicles, no injuries; one Gaza resident is shot in the leg. Meanwhile, several dozen Israeli "Down with the Occupation" activists demonstrate at Damascus Gate; another group of Israelis tries to carry Israeli flag into the Haram al-Sharif compound; a Gush Emunim march of 2,000 proceeds through the Old City and to Mount of Olives [FJ 6/13]. Arab World: Fighting in south Beirut continues; estimated death toll exceeds 100 [WP 6/6]. Amal leader Nabih Birri calls for ceasefire in recognition of 'Id al-Fitr holiday [MG 6/10]. SLA demolishes 14 homes at Ruman, one mile north of security zone in south Lebanon, in retaliation for ambush [JP 6/6].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli govt. sources state Israel and Jordan have agreed that Israel will attend int'l conference if Jordan will bring only Palestinians acceptable to Israel; understanding was worked out over the last month with mediation by U.S. and others [NYT, WP 11/11].

Other Countries: Israeli delegation to UN and Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations cosponsor seminar at UN on "Israel, Zionism and the United Nations"; Arab League permanent representative to the UN protests the seminar to UN Sec.-Gen. Perez de Cuellar as an "Israeli invasion" of the UN and a violation of all the regulations of the body. Seminar follows demonstration outside UN building against the "Zionism is Racism" resolution passed by UN on 10 November 1975. Pres. Reagan sends message to conference saying he supports any move to repeal the resolution [JP, WP 11/10; NYT 11/11].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli soldier Yosef Martin, 20, is stabbed and critically wounded near Damascus Gate in E. Jerusalem; attacker escapes, no arrests are made [JTA 11/13]

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Council of Jewish Settlers in Judea, Samaria and Gaza issue statement saying any govt. decision to cede even part of Israel's "sovereignty" over those areas would be illegal, "ought not to be obeyed," and should be met with campaign of civil disobedience, including refusal to pay taxes or to serve in the military [JP 11/6].

Arab World: Mubarak and Arafat hold 4 hours of talks; Egyptian officials report Mubarak is pressing Arafat to rectify the "ambiguous stand" of the PLO toward the Hussein-Arafat agreement, take clear steps to show PLO can be a responsible partner in negotiations [WP, BG 11/6]. SLA Commander Antoine Lahad states he hopes all Israeli units, apart from logistical support, will be out of security zone in near future, stresses relations are good with Israel but SLA intends to manage own affairs [JP 11/6].

Other Countries: Three hundred delegates from Latin American countries meet in Cartagena in the 7th Congress of the Federation of American Arab Organizations (FEARAB), adopt program of advancing PLO's cause in the continent [JTA 11/5].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Ovadia Baruchi, 60, is stabbed in East Jerusalem near Damascus Gate; condition is reported to be improving. A number of Palestinians are arrested [JP 11/6; JTA 11/7].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Abu Dis village mukhtar 'Issa Jaffal dismissed by occupation authorities for refusing to urge villagers to drop suit against confiscation of 2500 dunums of their land. Beitunia College students strike, hold peaceful march protesting Village League members vandalizing, firing and hurling stones at student dormitories over past week. Israel's foreign reserves fall $351 million in July to just over $2.6 billion. Ministerial Economic Committee decides to cut all gov't. contracts to 25% over next 3 mos. Pres. Herzog urges Shamir and Peres to meet to consider joint rule proposals. Herzog refuses to invite Meir Kahane for customary post-election consultations. Umm al-Fahm Village Council conference at Tel Aviv Press Club disrupted by Kach members.

Arab World: In Le Monde inteview, Syrian Pres. Assad rules out linkage between IDF withdrawal and removal of Syrian troops from Lebanon.

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Jerusalem municipal employees assault Palestinian women selling vegetables at Damascus Gate, then destroy produce. Arab World: Israeli helicopters, F-16s & gunboats shell and drop experimental phosphorous & helium bombs on Nahr al-Bared camp, N. Lebanon where 16,000 Palestine refugees live; [casualty figures unavailable]. IDF kill 2 suspected of planting roadside bomb near Sidon. Grenade tossed at SLA patrols in Tyre; no injuries reported; IDF close Tyre port.

IDF artillery fired at Syrian positions in Bekaa after Syrian tractor fortifying positions reportedly crosses cease-fire line.
