In the West Bank, a Palestinian man succumbs to injures sustained from Israeli forces during a raid in Fawwar refugee camp on 6/17/2023. Israeli settlers set fire to a vehicle in Kafr Ni’ma. Israeli settlers also vandalize olive, almond, grape, and fig trees, demolish an agricultural structure, and steal property in Qusra. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers assault a Palestinian child and vandalize wheat and barley fields in Ein al-Beida in the Masafer Yatta area. Israeli forces raid al-Fara’a refugee camp, destroying infrastructure and property. In East Jerusalem, 80,000 Muslim worshippers attend Friday prayers at the Haram al-Sharif compound. Thousands of worshippers from the West Bank are denied entry to East Jerusalem for the prayers. Israeli forces block Palestinian Red Crescent medics from entering the compound. In Gaza, Israeli forces bomb Gaza City, Nuseirat refugee camp, Beit Hanun, and Rafah, killing at least 149 people, including 36 members of the same family gathered to break their fast in a home in Nuseirat refugee camp. Rockets are fired at Sderot; no damage is reported. In Lebanon, Israeli forces bomb Hula, Marwahin, Kafr Kila, Ayta ash Shab, and Labbouneh. Hezbollah forces attack an Israeli radar site in Shebaa Farms. In the Red Sea, a missile fired from Yemen hits a tanker. More than 31,490 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, including at least 13,400 children and 8,900 women, and around 73,439 have been injured since 10/7/2023. At least 7,000 people are missing in rubble, including 1,700 children. 425 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since 10/7/2023, including 111 children. More than 4,665 people have been injured. Israel reports that 1,139 Israelis and foreign nationals have been killed and 5,400 have been injured in Israel since 10/7/2023, including Israeli soldiers. In addition, 247 Israeli soldiers have been killed and 1,476 injured in Gaza since the ground invasion began on 10/27/2023. Over 1.93 million Palestinians, nearly 85% of the population of Gaza, have been displaced since 10/7/2023. There has been a complete electricity blackout in Gaza since 10/12/2023 due to the Israeli blockade. At least 70,000 housing units have been destroyed and 290,000 have been damaged in Israeli airstrikes since 10/7/2023, constituting over 60% of all housing units. UNICEF says that 31% of children under the age of 2 in Gaza are suffering from acute malnutrition. The UN says the rubble caused by Israeli attacks take years to clear. 187 trucks carrying aid enter Gaza. U.S. forces airdrop 35,700 meals and 31,800 bottles of water over northern Gaza. Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the PFLP, and the Palestinian National Initiative criticize the appointment of the new PA prime minister Mohammed Mustafa, calling it a “unilateral” designation by President Mahmoud Abbas that “inflicts harm on our people and national cause,” saying the formation of the new government should be done by national consensus. Fatah responds by saying Hamas caused the Israeli invasion of Gaza by “undertaking the October 7 adventure.” Agence France-Presse reports that Hamas, Islamic Jihad, PFLP, and Houthi movement members discussed coordinating their actions against Israel last week. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office issues a statement saying that Israel will send a delegation to Qatar to continue ceasefire negotiations and that the Israeli military is preparing to invade Rafah. U.S. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby says Hamas’s ceasefire proposal is “within the bounds” of what has been discussed in recent months. Times of Israel, Channel 12, and Ynet report that an invasion of Rafah is not imminent. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant presents the security cabinet with 4 scenarios for the political situation in Gaza after Israel’s war, including Hamas control, Israeli occupation, chaos, and local rule in coordination with the PA, saying he prefer the latter scenario. Australia resumes funding of UNRWA. Foreign Minister Penny Wong says the “best available current advice from agencies and the Australian government lawyers is that UNRWA is not a terrorist organization and that existing additional safeguards sufficiently protect Australian taxpayer funding.” Australia will also deploy a military cargo plan to help airdrop aid in Gaza. Israeli forces also issue a military order seizing 29 dunams (7 acres) of land in Sinjil and Turmus ‘Ayya. In his State of the Union address, U.S. president Joe Biden says the U.S. military will set up a temporary pier off the coast of Gaza to deliver aid but that no U.S. soldiers will enter Gaza as it will be built offshore. Biden also says, “to the leadership of Israel I say this: Humanitarian assistance cannot be a secondary consideration or a bargaining chip.” Biden is filmed telling Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) that he has told Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu that “you and I are going to have a come to Jesus meeting.” The PA presidency thanks Biden for supporting a 2-state solution and a ceasefire during his speech. Israeli forces also uproot streets during a raid in Jenin. Israeli forces arrest 15 Palestinians during late-night raids in Bethlehem, Hebron, and Jenin. In Gaza, the telecommunications outage that started on 1/12 continues, with internet and phone services cut off. The Wall Street Journal reports that Israel is considering seizing the Philadelphi Corridor by force and has informed Egypt of its intentions. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu later says that his government has not decided if it will seize the Egyptian-controlled area by force. Israel’s Mossad and Shin Bet claim Hamas planned attacks on Jewish and Israeli targets abroad, including the Israeli embassy in Sweden. Denmark arrested several people said to be linked to Hamas in December after receiving information from the Mossad. (HA, HA 1/13)

U.S. senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT) says President Joe Biden should distance himself from Prime Minister “Netanyahu and the horrific war he is waging against the Palestinian people.” (AJ 1/13)

A Jewish-Israeli civics teacher tells the Guardian that he was arrested and placed in solitary confinement in November after he mourned the killing of civilians in Gaza in Facebook posts. The man was also fired by the Petach Tikvah municipality for his posts. An Israeli court later overturns his dismissal, saying the municipality did not have justifiable cause. (GDN 1/13; HA 1/15)

In the West Bank, 1 Israeli settler hit 1 Palestinian child with his car near Qalqilya, causing the child to be treated at a hospital in Israel for his injuries. Israeli settlers with military escort also demonstrated near Beita. Israeli left-wing activists were also demonstrating against the settlers who want to reopen the Evyatar settlement outpost near Beita. Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Beita, injuring 7 with rubber-coated bullets and 87 with tear gas. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 3, including 1 child with live ammunition and 2 with rubber-coated bullets. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Bayt Dajan, injuring 16, including 2 with rubber-coated bullets, the rest with tear gas. In East Jerusalem, UN officials met with the Salem family who are threatened by eviction in Sheikh Jarrah, calling on Israel to stop all evictions in East Jerusalem. In Israel, Israel said a drone crossed from Lebanon into Israel but that it lost radar contact with the drone shortly after. Hezbollah said it had flown a reconnaissance drone over Israel for 40 minutes. Later, Israel violated Lebanese air space by flying 2 low-flying fighter jets over Beirut. Patriarch of the Orthodox Church of Jerusalem Theophilos III, Custos of the Holy Land Francesco Patton, and Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem Nourhan Manougian wrote a letter to Israel’s environmental protections minister Tamar Zandberg, requesting that she stop plans to expand the Jerusalem Walls National Park. The plans would expand the park into the church properties on the Mount of Olives. The 3 Christian leaders called the plans “a brutal measure that constitutes a direct and premeditated attack on the Christians in the Holy Land,” saying “we cannot help but feel that various entities are seeing to minimize, not to say eliminate any non-Jewish characteristics of the Holy City by attempting to alter the status quo on this holy mountain. They have failed due to the objection and lack of cooperation from the Churches. After their attempts failed, they resorted to statutory powers by advancing a plan to declare vast parts of the mountain as a national park.” The proposal to expand the park was scheduled to be heard at the Jerusalem Municipality’s local planning and construction committee on 3/2. In the West Bank, up to 70 Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian shepherds with stones and clubs in Sa‘ir, causing fractures and bruises to an elderly man and his nephew. Israeli forces traveling in a minibus with Palestinian license plates assassinated 3 Palestinians during a raid in Nablus. The forces blocked a vehicle carrying the 3 Palestinians and jumped out of the minibus, shooting dozens of bullets at their car. The al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades said the 3 men, Ashraf al-Mubaslat, Adham Mabrukeh, and Mohammed al-Dakheel, were members or their organization. A 4th person in the car was arrested. Israel claimed that the men had “tried to open fire” but had not fired at the Israeli forces ambushing them. Israeli forces also sealed off the main entrance to ‘Azzun. Elsewhere, Israeli forces demolished a water cistern near Bayt Dajan. 7 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Jalazun refugee camp, Bethlehem, Beit Umar, Kafr Qalil, and al-Yamun. Israeli forces fired a missile at Syria from a fighter jet flying over Lebanese air space. Syria then fired an anti-aircraft missile at the fighter jet, missing it. The anti-aircraft missile fell near Jenin, causing neither injuries nor damage. Turkish foreign minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said that Turkey would not abandon its commitments to Palestine if the country normalizes its relations to Israel. Israeli president Isaac Herzog is expected to meet with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in March. Nr. Gaza, Israeli military radar spots a small drone flying from Gaza across the border into Israel. IAF jets are deployed to monitor its activity, then the drone falls to the ground on the Israeli side of the border fence. Hamas later claims responsibility. U.S. Defense Secy. Chuck Hagel announces an arms deal with Israel at a press conference in Tel Aviv alongside Israeli DM Moshe Ya’alon. The sale includes V-22 Osprey helicopter-plane aircraft, refueling tankers, advanced radars for fighter jets, and advanced missiles that target air defenses. Iran, taking it to Ashdod for further inspection; Israeli authorities said the ship carried 4 crates holding some 70,000 rounds of ammunition for Kalashnikov rifles, 1,000s of mortars, 6 Chinese C-704 antiship missiles, and 2 radar systems. Iran denies smuggling arms. The IDF makes a brief incursion into c. Gaza to level lands e. of al-Bureij r.c. to clear lines of sight. On the Rafah border, 2 Palestinians are killed, 4 are injured in an explosion in a smuggling tunnel.
