Arab World: Frank Reed, American director of private West Beirut school, is kidnapped by Islamic Jihad in West Beirut (WP 9/10).

Arab World: IDF warplanes again strike at alleged headquarters of Palestinian Popular Struggle Front near Sidon; at least three are killed (MEI 9/12).

Occupied Palestine/Israel: F.M. Shamir says he will never concede territories in exchange for peace. Survey shows 45,000 settlers are now in occupied territories among 1.3 million Palestinians (MEI 9/14).

Arab World: At Tunis press conference, PLO Deputy Chairman Abu lyad says PLO opposes terrorist acts, individual and state-sponsored, following Karachi and Istanbul incidents (FJ 9/12). U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Murphy in Damascus for talks with Syrian President al-Asad; Asad stresses importance of international conference (MEI 9/14). Syria has ordered most of Abu Nidal's group in Damascus to leave, and detained 14 (including Abu Nidal's nephew 'Abd al-Karim al-Banna, who was released after two weeks following Libyan intervention), according to al-Ittihad (Abu Dhabi) (AFP 9/7).

Other Countries: Nonaligned movement conference in Hararends; accuses U.S. of ''state terrorism" in bombing of Libya; calls on U.S. to "end unprovoked aggression against Libyas well as military maneuvers in Gulf of Sidra (NYT 9/8). Pakistan's President Zia al-Haq says Pan Am terrorists have no apparent connection to any government; will be tried in Pakistan (under threat of death penalty); says Palestinian hijacking in Pakistan showed "bad taste" but would not reduce Pakistan's support for Palestinian cause (NYT 9/8).

Arab World: Israel Navy reimposes blockade of port of Sidon; intercepts three commercial vessels, prevents them from entering port. State of emergency declared in Palestinian camps near Sidon for fear of Israeli attack (FBIS 9/8).

Occupied Palestine/Israel: P.M.: Thatcher, ending trip to Israel with news conference, says if PLO refuses to renounce terrorism and recognize Israel other negotiating representatives of Palestinian people must be found; says "ultimate solution" to Palestinian problem is federation of Jordan, West Bank, and Gaza [WP 5/28]. In Knesset, P.M. Peres survives four votes of no-confidence over Shalom crisis [LT 5/29]. Six hundred Palestinian prisoners in Junayd prison near Nablus go on hunger strike to protest conditions [FJ 5/30].

Arab World: Syrian V.P. 'Abd al-Halim Khaddam arrives in Moscow to discuss possible attack against Syria and PLO bases by Israel and U.S. Syrian Pres. al-Asad ends Greek visit; joint communique with P.M. Papandreou states Greece will initiate actions within EEC to start dialogue on M.E. solution.

Other Countries: Italian judicial officials issue warrants for arrest of 14 alleged Arab terrorists, including Abu Nidal, in connection with terror incidents in Italy last year [WP 5/28].

Arab World: Eight killed and 60 wounded in Amal-Palestinian gunfight at Burj al-Burajinah [LT 5/28].

Other Countries: In London, PLO representative Faisal 'Awayda condemns Thatcher's visit and wams of terror attacks if PLO is left out of peace process [MG 5/28].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: P.M.Peres, opening Knesset, says he is willing to talk peace with Jordan or a vetted Jordanian-Palestinian delegation; offers "limited self-govemment" to occupied territories [DT 5/20]. Industry Minister Ariel Sharon tours the 600 dunums of land near Hebron where he wants two new "industrial zones" built to fumish jobs to the region's settlers [JP 5/20; AA 5/25]. Histadrut chief Yisrael Kessar condemns plan [JP 5/21].

Other Countries: Reagan administration asks Syrian President al-Asad to close Abu Nidal's Damascus office, whose existence Syria denies [NYT 5/20]. Nine residents of Golan Heights condemned in military court to prison sentences ranging from 10 to 37 years for "security offenses" [AA 5/25].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: P.M. Peres states Israel has engaged in "quiet diplomacy" with Jordan since King Hussein's break with the PLO in February [BG, WP 4/29]. Syrian army deserter captured by Israeli army in S. Lebanon says on Israel TV that he and 2 other Syrian deserters were recruited and paid by Fateh to infiltrate Israel, take hostages at Kibbutz Manara, take the French ambassador to Israel hostage, and demand safe passage out of the country to Jordan, Egypt, or Tunisia; he states Fateh has many Syrian, Pakistani, and Iraqi recruits for similar missions [JP 4/29].

Arab World: Spokespersons for Yasir Arafat's Fateh, the DFLP, and the PFLP denounce Jordanian regime for secret contacts with Israeli government officials [FJ 5/2]. Abu Nidal's Fateh Revolutionary Council claims responsibility for 4/27 shooting of British tourist in East Jerusalem, states it was in reprisal for U.S. air raid on Libyand British "collusion" in the attack, states Briton shot was an intelligence agent [WP, PI 4/29]. Egypt, which supplies Israel with one quarter of its oil, has reduced prices by approximately 25%, saving Israeli Treasury over $50 million a year [JTA 4/29].

Arab World: King Hussein calls on Palestinian people to decide who should lead them [NYT 2/23]. Syrian Pres. Hafiz al-Asad has called King Hussein about a joint approach to M.E. peace following Hussein's decision to suspend talks with Yasir Arafat [LT 2/22].

Other Countries: UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar summoned Israeli UN ambassador this week and demanded Israel withdraw all its invading forces from S. Lebanon, expressed concern over extensive military operations Irael carried out in S. Lebanon in violation of international law [DW 2/22]. France has freed and expelled 2 members of the Abu Nidal organization who served half of their prison terms for assassinating a PLO leader and another Palestinian in France in 1978 [NYT, LT 2/22].

Arab World: Israeli army thins out forces in S. Lebanon, withdraws most mechanized infantry units to "security zone." Army sources confirm 2,000 Lebanese suspects were interrogated and "between 50 and 100" are still held. It is unclear how many of the estimated 3,000 Israeli troops used in the search remain in Lebanon [WP 2/23].

Other Countries: Soviet navy has increased number of vessels off Israeli coast to 3 warships, 1 spy ship, 2 support vessels [JDW 2/22].

Arab World: Egyptian naval patrol rams Israeli pleasure boat off coast of Taba, injuring several tourists aboard [LT 2/6].

Other Countries: U.S. State Dept. issues legal brief stating an American Jew's religious and/or political affinity for Israel may form part of basis for depriving him/her of U.S. citizenship; brief was prepared in relation to MK Meir Kahane case [NYT 2/5].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli planes intercept Libyan executive jet over Mediterranean, force it to land in Israel; military sources state they were looking for Abu Nidal. Passengers are interrogated, plane released. Libya denounces action, charges U.S. complicity [NYT, WP 2/5]. Syria accuses Israel of air piracy, requests emergency session of UN Security Council to discuss interception of Libyan jet [NYT 2/5]. U.S. State Dept. refrains from making judgment on action [NYT 2/5]. Bomb explodes in Ramat Gan, injuring 3 [NYT, LAT 2/5].

Other Countries: Bomb explodes in Paris bookstore, wounding 4 [NYT 2/5]. Group calling itself the Committee of Solidarity with Arab and Middle Eastern Political Prisoners claims responsibility [NYT 2/5]. (A bomb found the day before in the Eiffel Tower was safely defused) [LAT, NYT 2/5].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Over 150 Palestinians, Israelis replant olive saplings uprooted by the Nature Reserves Authority 3 weeks ago, north of Jerusalem; 6 Israeli officials reportedly try to uproot some replanted saplings, army disperses both groups UP 1/26]. Israeli military delegation ends 5-day visit to Liberia for talks on "future cooperation" [JDW 1/25].

Arab World: Yasir Arafat arrives in Amman for talks with King Hussein [CSM 1/27]. Jordanian govt. sends parliament a new electoral law that would reassert Jordan's responsibility for the West Bank, provide representation for Palestinian refugees in Jordan; parliamentary legal committee is studying the law [NYT 1/26].

Other Countries: UN Undersecretary-General Brian Urquhart states PLO should accept UN resolutions 242, 338, that Israel should not dictate who represents Palestinians at peace talks [JP 1/26]. Interpol issues worldwide wanted notice for Abu Nidal [PI 1/31].

Military Action

Arab World: SLA shells Shi'ite village of Kafra in S. Lebanon, killing 1 UNIFIL soldier [NYT 1/26]. Libyan leader Col. Mu'ammar Qadhdhafi boards missile-bearing patrol boat, sails into Gulf of Sidra, 1 day after U.S. 6th Fleet began maneuvers off Libyan coast [WP 1/26].

Arab World: Fourteen-member al-Quds Committee concludes meetings in Morpcco with call for "Jihad in all its forms" until East Jerusalem, occupied territories are liberated [JP 1/24].
