Occupied Palestine/Israel: Reuters reports the existence of Israeli undercover "death squads" on W. Bank and Gaza Strip; military spokesman denies that Israel assassinates wanted men [WT 10/24]. In Far'ah refugee camp soldiers shoot, kill 17-yearold Palestinian [NYT 10/25, FJ 10/30]. In Nablus 3 Palestinians are shot, injured by Israeli soldiers. In Nusayrat camp 4 Palestinians are injured during clashes with troops. At Beach camp soldiers shoot, injure 2 Palestinians [FJ 10/30].

Arab World: Israeli warplanes strike Syrian Social Nationalist Party base in south Lebanon. One person is wounded [NYT, WP 10/25]. In south Lebanon Israeli troops capture 7 Palestinian guerrillas trying to cross the Lebanese-Israeli border [WP 10/ 25].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: After 10 days Israeli authorities lift curfew on the village of Burqa; villagers are forbidden to harvest olive crop [FJ 10/23].

Arab World: Christian Science Monitor reports that Israel's Labor party asked PLO through the Soviets to calm the uprising in order to help with the election [CSM 10/ 17].

Other Countries: Leaders of the American Jewish Congress, the American Jewish Committee, and the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith declare that the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee is out of step with the feelings of the American Jewish community; the three groups have agreed to form a joint political committee to work on behalf of Israel [NYT 10/17]. UNRWA releases its annual report at UN headquarters. In 1987 it spent $207 million to help 2.3 million Palestinian refugees. UNRWA reports that 47 workers are being detained by Israeli authorities [NYT 10/18].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Demonstrations erupt throughout the Gaza Strip: in Rafah 5 Palestinians are shot, injured; in Khan Yunis troops injure 4 people with plastic bullets; in Beach camp 3 Palestinians are injured by Israeli troops. In Salfit 4 Palestinians are wounded by soldiers. In Nablus troops wound 4 Palestinians. In Kufr Thulth troops arrest 15 Palestinians [FJ 10/ 23].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Hamas, the Muslim fundamentalist leadership in the occupied territories, and the PLO-backed Unified National Command of the Uprising agree to coordinate activities in the occupied territories [LAT 10/7]. The Progressive List for Peace withstands attempt by Likud and Tehiya to exclude it from upcoming Knesset elections; elections commission rules that the Progressive List for Peace does not oppose the Jewish nature of Israel [WP, LAT 10/7]. A general strike is called in Gaza in remembrance of the first anniversary of the killing of 4 Gazans [FJ 10/11]. Elementary and secondary schools open in East Jerusalem for the first time in over a month [FJ 10/11].

Other Countries: U.S. gives consular immunity to 50 members of Israel's military purchasing and trade mission in New York [WP 10/7]. British Labor party recognizes the PLO as the sole representative of the Palestinian people and the right of Palestinians to a homeland [FJ 10/11].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Nablus 27- year-old Palestinian is killed as troops fire on stone throwers [NYT 10/8], 3 Palestinians are shot [FJ 10/11]. Two Palestinians suspected of collaborating with the Israelis are shot, killed [WJP, LAT 10/7]. At least 19 Palestinians are injured in riots throughout Gaza [FJ 10/11].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli troops impose a curfew on the 125,000 Palestinians living in Nablus; Balatah refugee camp is also placed under curfew [WP 9/11]. Farmers' Federation (Israel) warns that without government actions more Jews will be selling land to Arabs [JP 9/10].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In the village of Nuba the body of a 26-year-old Palestinian is found; Israel Radio reports that he was killed by troops dispersing demonstrators [FJ 9/18]. In Gaza City a fire bomb kills a Palestinian, wounds three more. In Nablus a collaborator is stabbed to death; army wounds 4 Arabs with live ammunition, 10 with beatings or rubber bullets [WP 9/11].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: At inner cabinet meeting ministers Yitzhaq Modai and Ariel Sharon call for Israeli annexation of occupied territories; ministers from Labor party counter that annexation of 850,000 W. Bank Palestinians would dilute the Jewish character of Israel [WP 8/4]. In Nablus total strike is observed [FJ 8/7].

Arab World: In Baghdad the PLO announces it will perform duties of legitimate representative of Palestinian people; it gives little indication how it will carry out its new duties in territories [WP 8/4].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: IDF destroys 10 homes, seals 2 of families of people suspected of throwing Molotov cocktails at army patrols, settlers [WP 8/4, FJ 8/7]. In Nablus Israeli troops use rubber bullets, helicopters to quell demonstrators. In Irtas, near Bethlehem, troops arrest 11. Clashes occur in Salfit, Jabalya, Khan Yunis, Rafah, Gaza City, Beach, Bayt Hanun, and Bayt Lahiya [FJ 8/7].

Other Countries: Negotiations in U.S. Congress clear way for Kuwait to buy sophisticated weapons from U.S.; restriction will be placed on the weapons to ensure Israeli security [WP 8/4].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Japanese F.M. Uno visits Israel; pledges $500,000 for Palestinian projects [NYT 6/27]. Israeli authorities order 14 Nablus-area schools closed until 6/30 [FJ 7/3].

Military

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Army troops destroy 2nd floor of Gaza City home [FJ 7/3]. The army surrounds churches in Bethlehem and Bayt Sahur fearing demonstrations following Sunday services [FJ 7/3]. In Jaffa fire destroys part of Bassam, Bek Mosque; Muslim leaders believe the fire was deliberately started by Jewish extremists [FJ 7/3].

Arab World: IDF and South Lebanon Army sweep through S. Lebanon searching for resistance fighters; come within 5 miles of the Syrian lines [FJ 7/3].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli court convicts John Demjanjuk of crimes against the Jewish people, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and crimes against a persecuted people [WP 4/19]. General strike continues in occupied territories [FJ 4/24]. Israeli officials confiscate al-Fajr, al-Quds, and al-Sha'b. Al-Fajr is banned from distribution in W. Bank and Gaza Strip for 2 weeks [FJ 4/24].

Arab World: PLO announces Khalil al-Wazir will be buried in Syria. Tunisian govemment officially blames Israel for assassination of Wazir [WP 4/19].

Other Countries: U.S. condemns murder of PLO military leader Khalil al-Wazir as "act of political assassination" [NYT 4/19].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Entire W. Bank, except Jericho, is declared closed military zone [FJ 4/24]. Palestinian is killed when soldiers open fire on demonstration in Rafah. Palestinian from Gaza's Zaytun quarter is shot dead in separate incident. In Jenin, protester is shot in head, seriously wounded. Curfews continue in 16 camps, Nablus, and 'Anabta. Village of 'Azzun is ordered under curfew [FJ 4/24].

Other Countries: Speaking in New York before Conference of Presidents of Major Am. Jewish Organizations, Israeli p.m. Shamir assails Am. Jews who have pushed for Israel to accept intemational conference [NYT 3/20].

Military Action Occupied Palestine/Israel: Army gunfire kills 1 Palestinian, wounds 1 other [WP 3/20]. Army declares most of W. Bank and Gaza Strip closed military zones, barring media from territories for 2d consecutive day. Soldiers attempto close shops in Nablus, Jenin, and other areas. Palestinians in 'Ayn Bayt al-Ma' refugee camp near Nablus protest 3/18 killing of camp resident by army [NYT 3/20]. In nighttime raid of Ramallah Hospital, soldiers arrest 10 patients and visitors [NYT, WP 3/20]. Soldiers distribute leaflets in Tulkarm and Qalqiliyyah calling on residents to end uprising. About 200 Muslims attempt to pray at Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron, clash with Jewish worshipers [WP 2/21]. Police arrest Mutawakil Sa'id Taha, head of writers union in occupied territories [FJ 2/21]. Policemen attack 9 Palestinian workers in their Tel Aviv apartment [FJ 2/28].

Arab World: PLO issues statement forbidding Palestinians to meet with Sec. of State Shultz [NYT 2/22]. In Cairo, 300 worshipers leaving mosque chant antiIsrael slogans in spontaneous demonstration [NYT 2/22].

Other Countries: Washington Post reports U.S. Justice Department officials believe Israel had another spy in the CIA or Defense Department in addition to Jonathan Pollard [WP 2/19].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli soldiers and Palestinian protesters clash in Nablus and Ramallah. Demonstrations are also reported in Gaza City's Sha'jiyyah quarter and Burayj and Jabalya camps [WP 2/20; FJ 2/21]. Curfews continue in Beach, Jalazun, and Am'ari camps and Bayt Ur al-Tahta [FJ 2/21].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Several cars are set afire in Jewish neighborhood in Jerusalem [WP 2/15]. Palestinian dies of injuries resulting from army beating in Gaza City [NYT 2/16]. Other Countries: In Washington meeting to discuss new U.S. peace proposal, Israeli envoy Ehud Olmert warns U. S. State Dept. official Charles Hill that P. M. Shamir will never accept land for peace principle [WP 2/16]. In Cypriot port of Limassol, bomb blast kills 3 PLO officials [NYT 2/15].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Majdal Shams, 1,600 police use tear gas to disperse stonethrowing Druze demonstrating to protest 1982 Israeli annexation of Golan Heights; about 20 are arrested [WP 2/15]. Scattered demonstrations are reported in Gaza Strip, Jerusalem, Ramallah, Nablus, Bethlehem, and Jenin [WP 2/15; FJ 2/21]. Military seals off Nablus-area village of Burin following clash between villagers, settlers, and soldiers. Curfews are imposed in Halhul and Hebron [FJ 2/21].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Bayt Ummar, village north of Hebron, Israeli forces fire into crowd of stone throwers, killing 3, wounding at least 7. In nearby Bayt Fajjar, residents burn bus used to transport workers to Israel; at least 10 are wounded in clash between villagers and army. At least 1 is shot during demonstration in Halhul. In village of Jabal al-Mukabir, soldiers close off 2 roads after stone throwers attack Jewish houses. Police use military-delegated emergency powers to impose curfew on Jerusalem refugee camp after violent demonstrations in 4 E. Jerusalem neighborhoods [NYT, WP 2/8]. Violent demonstrations and clashes with police are reported in Jerusalem's Thuri quarter, 'Isawiyyah village, and nearby Silwan village. At least 9 are injured by police trying to disperse demonstrations. Shu'fat camp, north of Jerusalem, isordered under curfew after violent nightlong demonstration [FJ 2/14]. Military imposes curfews in Qalqiliyyah, 'Aqbat Jabir refugee camp, Tulkarm-area village of Hibla, Bayt 'Ur al-Tahta, and Kafr Malik after violent demonstrations. In Tulkarm, curfew is temporarily lifted to allow food distribution. Curfews continue in Nablus, old and new 'Askar camps, 'Ayn Bayt al-Ma', Tulkarm camp, Bani Na'im, 'A'idah camp, Jalazun camp, Am'ari camp, and 'Arrub camp [FJ 2/14]. Reports indicate 2 villagers are shot, killed: 1 during demonstration i Tulkarm, another in clash in Ayyub. Both demonstrations are instigated by rumors of settler attacks against Palestinians [WP 2/10]. UN officials report treating 37 residents of Jabalya refugee camp for beating injuries after army raid. At least 1 is shot, wounded in Khan Yunis [WP 2/8]. Soldiers conducting search for stone throwers in Burayj camp, seize youth, beat him, and leave him in orange grove; boy dies in hospital [LAT 2/9]. Arab World: PLO fighters surround house near 'Ayn al-Hilwah in S. Lebanon where gunmen are believed to be holding 2 UNRWA employees [LAT 2/8].

Hebron Polytechnic Institute and Hebron U. are closed indefinitely. Israel postpones indefinitely reopening of schools in Nablus, Jenin, and Tulkarm [FJ 2/7]. In Nazareth, 50 Muslim, Christian, Druze, and Jewish leaders condemn Israeli measures in occupied territories, express support for uprising [FJ 2/7].

Arab World: Lebanese Shi'i coalition Islamic Resistance Front threatens to kill Israeli soldier held captive for 2 years [WP 2/2].

Other Countries: U.S. envoy Philip Habib meets with Egypt's Pres. Mubarak in Paris before returning to Washington [WSJ 2/2]. U.S. vetos UN Security Council resolution setting forth UN role in Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiations and calling on Israel to abide by Geneva Convention terms [WP 2/2]. In Rome, Jordan's King Hussein visits with Pope John Paul II, meets with Egyptian F. M. 'Ismat 'Abd al-Magid [NYT 2/2].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In village of 'Anabta near Tulkarm, stone-throwing Palestinians attack army bus, settlers' cars, and police vehicle after blockading road. Israeli fires on demonstrators, killing 2, wounding 1. Officials are uncertain whether shots were fired by soldiers or settlers. Army patrol later disperses crowd with live ammunition, wounding 2 more. Settlers attack village during curfew, vandalizing houses, cars [WP 2/2; FJ 2/7]. Crowds throw rocks, bottles and block roads in cities, villages, and camps throughout W. Bank; 3 Palestinians are wounded in Jenin, and 2 are injured by army gunfire in Hebron-region village of Bani Na'im; village is placed under curfew. Violent disturbances are also reported in E. Jerusalem [WP 2/2; FJ 2/7]. Israeli authorities arrest 14 Palestinians during raid of Jerusalem's Thuri quarter [FJ 2/7]. More than 20 are arrested in early morning raid in Nablus [WP 2/2]. Between 30,000 and 50,000 Israeli Jews participate in Peace Now-organized rally in Tel Aviv [WP 1/24; NYT 1/25]. Curfew on Jerusalem's al-Tur neighborhood is lifted after all male residents are rounded up, interrogated; 4 are arrested [WP 1/24]. Commercial strike continues in W. Bank despite army policy of breaking locks to force merchants to open [FJ 1/24].

Other Countries: Morris Abram, head of Conference of Presidents of Am. Jewish Organizations, criticizes Israel's policy of beating demonstrators [WP 1/25]. Asst. Sec. of State for Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs Richard Murphy meets with Arab League representative Clovis Maksoud and diplomats from Jordan, Tunisia, and Kuwait to discuss U.S. role in Middle East peace process [NYT 1/24].

Occupied Palestine/lIsrael: Israel says it will increase supervision of soldiers in the field after charges of excessive brutality. Soldiers raid Am'ari refugee camp near Ramallah, arresting at least 11 [NYT 1/24]. Scattered demonstrations occur in Ramallah, Nablus, and Bethlehem areas. Most curfews remain in effect [FJ 1/24].
