Arab World: PLO exec. committee member Yassir Abed-Rabbo states PLO will appoint government for State of Palestine in next 2-3 months [CSM 12/20]. King Hussein shakes up Jordanian government; F.M. Taher Masri is ousted, P.M. Zayd Rifa'i increases power [WP 12/20].

Other Countries: E.C. decides to hold talks with Israel, U.S., PLO to press for international peace conference [NYT 12/20]. Arafat meets with Austrian chancellor Vrantisky, F.M. Mock; Austria upgrades PLO representative inVienna to "ambassador" [CSM 12/20].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Labor's Peres announces willingness to enter talks with Likud to form another national unity government [NYT 11/21]. "Civil administration" announces W. Bank primary schools will reopen 12/1; secondary schools will follow; universities will remain closed [WP 11/22].

Arab World: Egypt announces itrecognized Palestinian state on 11/15 [NYT, WP 11/ 21]. In Amman King Hussein tells CBS News that U.S., Israel are blocking Middle East peace efforts [WP 11/21].

Other Countries: China formally recognizes the State of Palestine [NYT 11/21].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Nar Nablus Israeli troops shoot, kill 1 Palestinian, wound another. In Kafr 'Ayn soldiers wound 1 Palestinian. In Jabalya troops shoot, wound 12-year-old boy. In Hebron Israeli authorities demolish 2Palestinian homes. In Qalandiya camp Israeli soldiers smash doors, windows and overturn cars after their bus is stoned; UNRWA sources state that "well over 20 houses" were damaged [LAT 11/24].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Shops in W. Bank remain closed for second day in protest against deportations of Palestinians [WP 8/3]. Left-wing legislators call special meeting of the Knesset to discuss King Hussein's severing of ties with W. Bank; right-wing legislators will ask for extension of Israeli law to territories [NYT 8/3].

Arab World: In Baghdad PLO spokesman announces emergency session of Palestine National Council will be held to discuss King Hussein's surrendering of sovereignty over the W. Bank [WP 8/3]. Jordanian interior minister Raja'i Dajani says it is too early to comment on effects of King's move on administration of West Bank [WP 8/3].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Nablus troops kill 18-year-old Palestinian, wound 2 more [WP 8/3, FJ 8/7]. In Kafr Thulth 100 olive trees are destroyed. Tear gas is used to break up riots in Bethlehem and Beach camp. Clashes also occur in Burayj, Jabalya, Qalqiliyyah camps [FJ 8/7]. Arab World: Lebanese fighters attack South Lebanon Army position killing 1 SLA fighter [FJ 8/7].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Army opens Gaza Strip after 29-hour closure. In Gaza's Beach camp, Israeli soldiers use live ammunition to disperse stone-throwing Palestinian demonstrators, wounding 1; 3 demonstratorsustain injuries from beating [NYT 5/15]. Nablus and 3 surrounding refugee camps remain under strict curfew; curfew is also in effect in Duhayshah camp. Army reinforcements remain in territories [FJ 5/22].

Arab World: In Burj al-Barajinah refugee camp, south of Beirut, fighting intensifies between pro-Arafat and pro-Abu Musa forces [WP 5/15]. Police report 6 have been killed and 20 wounded in recent fighting in Burj al-Barajinah [NYT 5/15].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: During the night, Jewish settlers raid village of Bayta, breaking windows of cars and houses. P.M. Shamir and other political leaders speak at funeral of Israeli girl from Elon Moreh settlement killed 4/6 in Bayta; preliminary report of investigation into death indicates girl was shot in head. Following funeral settlers enter Dayr al-Hatab village; soldiers force settlers to leave [WP 4/8]. In Nablus-region village of Rujib, settlers stone Palestinian cars; 1 Palestinian is beaten. Officials demolish house in Shuyukh and 2 in Sa'ir. Closure of W. Bank schools is extended through 5/8 [FJ 4/10].

Arab World: Sec. of State George Shultz meets with King Fahd in Saudi Arabia and retums to Jordan to discuss progress of U.S. peace proposal with King Hussein [LAT 4/8].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Soldier shoots dead Palestinian youth allegedly running from hills near Bayta. Army demolishes 5 houses in Bayta; village remains under curfew [WP 4/8]. At least 4 Palestinians are injured during demonstration in Nablus. There are also clashes in Ramallah and nearby village of Biddu as well as Jenin and village of Qabatiyyah. 'Ayn Bayt al-Ma' remains under army curfew. In Gaza Strip, Beach camp youth is shot, seriously wounded; violent clash is also reported in Jabalya camp [FJ 4/10].

Occupied PalestinelIsrael: In village of Bayta, south of Nablus, 2 Palestinians and 1 Israeli are killed in clash between villagers and 16 youths and 2 adult guards from Jewish settlement of Elon Moreh; 1 guard is seriously wounded. Officials announce Jewish girl was stoned to death [WP 4/7]. Sec. of State George Shultz leaves Israel [WP 4/7]. Shop owners in Bayt Sahur, near Bethlehem, are fined and their IDs confiscated for opening their stores in the morning [FJ 4/10].

Arab World: Sec. of State Shultz travels to Cairo for meeting with Pres. Husni Mubarak before flying to Amman for talks with Jordan's King Hussein [WP 4/7]. Estimated 800 Palestinians demonstrate illegally in Amman streets to protest Shultz visit [NYT 4/7].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Nablus, Palestinian is injured while allegedly trying to disarm soldier. Curfews continue in many northern W. Bank areas, including Qabatiyyah, Jalazun camp, Am'ari camp, and Balatah camp [FJ 4/10].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Yamun, near Jenin, 3 houses are demolished by Israeli authorities; owners are suspected of participating in demonstrations [FJ 4/10]. In Bethlehem, 10 stores are welded shut and owners' IDs confiscated because shops had opened during morning [FJ 4/10].

Arab World: Sec. of State George Shultz meets with King Hussein in Amman, flies to Damascus for talks with Pres. Hafiz al-Asad, and returns to Jerusalem [WP 4/6].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Demonstrations are reported in several W. Bank and Gaza Strip villages and camps. In Zayat, in Tulkarm district, soldiers use live ammunition to disperse protesters, injuring 8. Curfews are in force in 6 W. Bank villages and cities as well as Qabatiyyah and Jenin camp. Balatah is under curfew for 14th consecutive day. Dayr Ghassana and Bayt Rima villages, near Ramallah, are among 6 sealed villages. Soldiers raid Sura village, near Nablus, and uproot olive trees. In Gaza Strip, curfew in Jalazun is lifted for 3 hours. In Dayr al-Balah camp, protesters stone car of settlers from Kiryat Arba; settlers flee and Palestinians burn car; camp is placed under curfew [FJ 4/10].

Arab World: In Israel's S. Lebanon security zone, Israeli soldiers kill 2 Palestinian commandos attempting to cross border. Palestine Liberation Front claims responsibility [WP 4/6].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Sodiers break into hospital in Ramallah, fire tear gas and rubber bullets, and arrest 2 Palestinian youths. In Sibastiyyah near Nablus, troops shoot, wound Palestinian protester [WP 3/2].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israel orders 4 W. Bank universities, 800 secondary and grade schools closed for 1 month [WP, NYT 2/3]. Commercial strike continues in occupied territories [FJ 2/7]. Settlers attack al-'Azzah camp in Bethlehem, clash with residents [FJ 2/7]. 'Izz al-Din al-'Aryan, sec. of Red Crescent Society in occupied territories, is served 3-month administrative detention order [FJ 2/7].

Arab World: Reports indicate Jordan's King Hussein has reservations about new U.S. proposal to restart peace negotiations because proposal contains "nothing new" [WP 2/2; NYT 2/3].

Other Countries: In Athens, PLO officials announce plan to charter ship, return Palestinian deportees to Israel [NYT 2/3]. U.S. officials state new peace proposal includes U.S. -mediated Israeli-Jordanian negotiations by September to achieve limited Palestinian self-rule in W. Bank and Gaza Strip and direct negotiations in December to reach final settlement on territories [WP 2/3]. In New York, U.S. veto defeats UN Security Council resolution demanding Israel abide by terms of 4th Geneva Convention and calling for international conference on Arab-Israeli dispute [FJ 2/7].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Curfew remains in force in Nablus, village of 'Anabta, old and new 'Askar camps, 'Ayn Bayt al-Ma', Tulkarm, Jalazun, Bani Na'im, village of Hibla near Qalqiliyyah, and Gaza's Burayj camp. Jabalya remains a closed military area [NYT 2/3; FJ 2/71. Palestine Press Service reports Palestinian is shot, wounded in Tulkarm clash with IDF; 20 are beaten by soldiers in Hibla demonstration. In Nazareth, 50 Muslim, Christian, Druze, and Jewish leaders condemn Israeli measures in occupied territories, express support for uprising [FJ 2/7].

Arab World: Lebanese Shi'i coalition Islamic Resistance Front threatens to kill Israeli soldier held captive for 2 years [WP 2/2].

Other Countries: U.S. envoy Philip Habib meets with Egypt's Pres. Mubarak in Paris before returning to Washington [WSJ 2/2]. U.S. vetos UN Security Council resolution setting forth UN role in Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiations and calling on Israel to abide by Geneva Convention terms [WP 2/2]. In Rome, Jordan's King Hussein visits with Pope John Paul II, meets with Egyptian F. M. 'Ismat 'Abd al-Magid [NYT 2/2].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In village of 'Anabta near Tulkarm, stone-throwing Palestinians attack army bus, settlers' cars, and police vehicle after blockading road. Israeli fires on demonstrators, killing 2, wounding 1. Officials are uncertain whether shots were fired by soldiers or settlers. Army patrol later disperses crowd with live ammunition, wounding 2 more. Settlers attack village during curfew, vandalizing houses, cars [WP 2/2; FJ 2/7]. Crowds throw rocks, bottles and block roads in cities, villages, and camps throughout W. Bank; 3 Palestinians are wounded in Jenin, and 2 are injured by army gunfire in Hebron-region village of Bani Na'im; village is placed under curfew. Violent disturbances are also reported in E. Jerusalem [WP 2/2; FJ 2/7]. Israeli authorities arrest 14 Palestinians during raid of Jerusalem's Thuri quarter [FJ 2/7]. More than 20 are arrested in early morning raid in Nablus [WP 2/2]. Balatah, new and old 'Askar, Duhayshah, Tulkarm, and Am'ari refugee camps and Nablus are under curfew [FJ 2/7]. Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Nablus and Balatah refugee camp, soldiers use tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition in clash with demonstrators, wounding at least 7. Nablus is declared closed military zone; Balatah is placed under curfew. In Gaza City, troops beat, teargas protesters, injuring at least 7. At least 2 Palestinians are wounded by army gunfire in Gaza [WP, NYT 1/311. In E. Jerusalem's Thuri quarter, demonstrators bum tires, block roads, and stone troops. Soldiers respond with tear gas, rubber bullets. Demonstrations are also reported in Hebron, Ramallah, and throughout Gaza Strip [FJ 1/31].
