Arab World: In Damascus King Hussein and Syrian pres. Hafiz al-Assad discuss Jordan's severing of ties with the W. Bank [LAT 8/9].

Military

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Troops use tear gas to break up demonstrations in al- 'Azzah. In 'Ayn Arik settlers and soldiers use tear gas, rubber bullets, live ammunition during clashes with Palestinians; the village is declared closed military zone. Near Tulkarm bomb explodes and injures 3. Demonstrations occur in Beach camp, Samu', Gaza City [FJ 8/14]. Police minister Chaim Bar-Lev tours the Allenby bridge, states that since Hussein's severing of ties crossings of the bridge have dropped by 50%; Palestinians state that travel restrictions placed on villages by Israelis have decreased bridge traffic [LAT 8/9].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israel orders closure of all 1,200 schools on W. Bank. Spokesman for civil administration says ending of school year early is unrelated to the uprising; it is a "technical decision" [LAT 7/16].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Curfews remain in effect for 80,000 W. Bank Palestinians in Nablus, Bayt Sahur, 'Anabta, Yabrud, Qalqiliyyah. Army surrounds mosques in Gaza to prevent demonstrations following Friday aftemoon prayers [LAT 7/16].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Qalqiliyyah residents clash with Jewish settlers [FJ 7/17]. In Gaza a number of residents are injured during demonstration in Jabalya and al-Burayj [FJ 7/17].

Arab World: The L.A. Times reports that Syria and China have concluded a sale which would give Syria China's new M-9 short-range missile [LAT 7/14].

Other Countries: In Beijing, Sec. of State George Shultz asks China to discontinue selling missiles in the Middle East [WP 7/15].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Japanese F.M. Uno visits Israel; pledges $500,000 for Palestinian projects [NYT 6/27]. Israeli authorities order 14 Nablus-area schools closed until 6/30 [FJ 7/3].

Military

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Army troops destroy 2nd floor of Gaza City home [FJ 7/3]. The army surrounds churches in Bethlehem and Bayt Sahur fearing demonstrations following Sunday services [FJ 7/3]. In Jaffa fire destroys part of Bassam, Bek Mosque; Muslim leaders believe the fire was deliberately started by Jewish extremists [FJ 7/3].

Arab World: IDF and South Lebanon Army sweep through S. Lebanon searching for resistance fighters; come within 5 miles of the Syrian lines [FJ 7/3].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Eight villages in the Hebron area are placed under curfew following the stabbing death of an Israeli [FJ 6/26]. The Burayj refugee camp is suffering from a water shortage; UNRWA distributes water in buckets to residents [FJ 6/26].

Arab World: The Washington Times reports PLO has told U.S. State Dept. officials that an article by Bassam Abu Sharif constitutes PLO policy [WT 6/21].

Military

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli settlers block roads in the Hebron area following the murder of an Israeli [FJ 6/26]. A firebomb in Gaza City injures 2 soldiers [FJ 6/26]. Clashes are reported in Beach, Jabalya, and Khan Yunis refugee camps [FJ 6/26].

Other Countries: American and Israeli officials announce that Syria and China are discussing the sale of short-range missiles to Damascus [NYT 6/22].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In order to show "Jewish presence" MKs Dov Shilansky and Ovadiya Eli tour Temple Mount [WT 5/25, FJ 5/29]. It is announced that an Israeli consular delegation will visit the Soviet Union for the first time in 21 years. [WP 5/25].

Military

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Burayj Palestinian man is shot dead by Israeli troops. A curfew is imposed, 30 people arrested in 'Anabta. One person is shot in Bayt Furik. During demonstrations in Gaza 39 people are injured [FJ 5/29].

Arab World: Large contingent of Israeli forces moves into central sector of Israeli iimposed "security zone" in S. Lebanon to stop "terrorists" from crossing the border. UN spokesman claims Israeli troops in southem Lebanon fired on UNIFIL armored car with rifles and artillery. Three Syrian soldiers are killed while manning a check point near Shatila [WT 5/25]. Israel expels 15 Lebanese from S. Lebanon for refusing to cooperate with newly formed "civil administration" [FJ5/29].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Elderly Palestinian wounded in earlier clash dies [FJ 5/8]. Israeli authorities uproot olive trees in villages of Ras Karkar and al-Janiyyah, west of Ramallah [FJ 5/8]. Physicians at Shifa Hospital in Gaza protest the arrest of Dr. Zakariya al-Agha [FJ 5/8].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Bani Na'im village, near Hebron, 2 Palestinians are shot dead after protesters allegedly attacked army patrol. Palestinian is killed by army gunfire in Balatah refugee camp [WP 5/4]. Soldiers raid houses in Duhayshah refugee camp, clash with residents. In Beach camp, protesters block roads, bum tires. Protests erupt in Jabalya, Maghazi, and Dayr al-Balah camps [FJ 5/8].

Arab World: Syrian forces in Lebanon's Biqa' Valley are put on alert as Israeli troops continue house-to-house search for Palestinian commandos in S. Lebanon; UN officials estimate between 1,500 and 2,000 Israeli soldiers are in S. Lebanon [WP 5/4].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Def. Min. Rabin tells Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Com. that 4,912 people are being detained in Israeli jails [WP 4/27]. Israeli govemment suspends official accreditation of 2 American reporters for not submitting stories about assassination of Khalil al-Wazir (Abu Jihad) to military censor [WP 4/27]. Bulldozers uproot olive trees in Qatannah village, north of Jerusalem; village is under 2-day curfew [FJ 5/1]. In E. Jerusalem, shopowners strike to protest 4/25 arrest of 14 merchants [FJ 5/1].

Arab World: PLO Chairman Yasir Arafat leaves Damascus. PLO Pol. Dept. head Faruq al-Qaddumi remains in Syria for further talks with govemment officials [CSM 4/28]. In Damascus, DFLP leader Nayif Hawatmah threatens more attacks on Israel from S. Lebanon [NYT 5/1]. National Resistance Front also claims responsibility for attack on Israel [WP 4/27].

Other Countries: In The Hague, World Court rules U.S. must submit to arbitration over legislation ordering PLO to close its observer mission to UN [WP 4/27].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli patrol kills 3 Palestinian guerrillas who entered Israel across Lebanese border; 2 Israeli soldiers are killed [WP 4/27; NYT 4/28]. In Gaza Strip, student demonstrators stone soldiers in Gaza City and Jabalya, Beach, and Khan Yunis camps. Soldiers respond with tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition. In Sha'jiyyah quarter of Gaza City, authorities seal 6 rooms; 2 houses in Dayr al-Balah camp are also sealed [FJ 5/1].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Jerusalem, hundreds of demonstrators throwing stones and carrying portraits of slain PLO official Khalil al-Wazir clash with border police near al-Aqsa Mosque; several are wounded, and at least 30 demonstrators are arrested [NYT, WP 4/23]. A

rab World: In Damascus PLO leaders, including Faruq al-Qaddumi, George Habash, and Nayif Hawatmah, meet with Syrian vice president 'Abd al-Halim Khaddam [LAT, WP 4/23].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Idna village, near Hebron, soldiers shoot, kill Palestinian who army says attacked patrol with nail-studded club. Palestinian demonstrator is killed by army gunfire inKhan Yunis refugee camp; another is shot dead in Gaza village of Bani Suhayla. At least 13 are shot, woundeduring clash with Israeli troops in Jabalya refugee camp [NYT, WP 4/23].

Arab World: Israeli warplanes attack 2 PFLP-General Command bases midway between Beirut and Sidon [NYT, WP 4/23].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli court convicts John Demjanjuk of crimes against the Jewish people, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and crimes against a persecuted people [WP 4/19]. General strike continues in occupied territories [FJ 4/24]. Israeli officials confiscate al-Fajr, al-Quds, and al-Sha'b. Al-Fajr is banned from distribution in W. Bank and Gaza Strip for 2 weeks [FJ 4/24].

Arab World: PLO announces Khalil al-Wazir will be buried in Syria. Tunisian govemment officially blames Israel for assassination of Wazir [WP 4/19].

Other Countries: U.S. condemns murder of PLO military leader Khalil al-Wazir as "act of political assassination" [NYT 4/19].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Entire W. Bank, except Jericho, is declared closed military zone [FJ 4/24]. Palestinian is killed when soldiers open fire on demonstration in Rafah. Palestinian from Gaza's Zaytun quarter is shot dead in separate incident. In Jenin, protester is shot in head, seriously wounded. Curfews continue in 16 camps, Nablus, and 'Anabta. Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli riot police halt bus carrying Palestinian high school students from Haifa to Umm al-Fahm; several students are beaten. At least 1 Palestinian is shot, wounded during clash with Israeli soldiers in Jenin. In Qabatiyyah, 2 Palestinians are shot, wounded when soldiers open fire on demonstrators [WP 2/17]. Army seizes 3 school buildings for military posts in Nablus [FJ 2/21]. Palestinian demonstrators bum tires and throw stones at entrance to Gush Qatif settlement in Gaza. In Rafah camp 4 are wounded in clash with soldiers [FJ 2/21]. In Sura and Majd villages, near Hebron, protesters bum Israeli buses. Soldiers use tear gas, rubber bullets to break up demonstration in Fawwar refugee camp, wounding 9. Protests are held in Jenin refugee camp, Duhayshah camp and Bani Na'im village [FJ 2/21].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli troops declare Gaza's Jabalya refugee camp a closed military zone, deny UN Undersec. Gen. Marrack Goulding entrance. Goulding decides not to enter Maghazi camp because of demonstration atcamp entrance. Lawyers for 4 W. Bank Palestinians scheduled to be deported announce their clients have dropped their appeals [WP 1/13]. General strike continues in most parts of W. Bank, E. Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip [FJ 1/17]. Housing Min. David Levi attends ceremony marking establishment of Lifna, new settlement near Hebron [FJ 1/17]. Israeli authorities demolish 12 houses in Gaza Strip's Nusayrat camp [FJ 1/17].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Rafah, 1 Palestinian is shot, killed, at least 3 others wounded when they allegedly try to stab an Israeli soldier; part of Rafah, 6 Gaza refugee camps and 4 W. Bank camps (Jalazun, Camp No. 1, 'Askar, and Tulkarm) are placed under curfew [NYT, WP 1/13]. Al-Fajr reports 'Ayn Bayt al-Ma', old and new 'Askar, and 'Arrub camps, as well as old city of Nablus are also under curfew [FJ 1/17]. In Rafah, military drops tear gas bombs into houses from helicopters, declares town closed military zone. Violent demonstrations are also reported at Jabalya, where several Palestinians are reported injured. Israel sends more troops into Gaza. At least 4 Palestinians are injured by Israeli gunfire during demonstration in Nablus. In Ramallah-district village of 'Ayn Yabrud, soldiers use live ammunition to disperse hundreds of demonstrators protesting killing of youth in Baytin 1/11 by settlers; at least 1 is injured [FJ 1/17].
