Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Jenin refugee camp 21-year-old man is killed by a rubber bullet. In the 'Ayn al-Sultan camp, 18- year-old dies as soldiers fire on stonethrowers [NYT 6/14, FJ 6/19]. In Duhayshah the body of a 12-year-old boy is found in a pool. At the boy's funeral a 40-year-man suffocates after tear gas is fired [FJ 6/19]. Three firebombs are thrown in a shopping mall in Tel Aviv [NYT 6/14]. Orchards and cornfields are set ablaze near Tulkarm [FJ 6/19].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Washington Post reports at least 1, 700 Palestinians are being held in administrative detention [WP 5/13]. Israel releases nearly 300 prisoners [WP 5/14]. Palestinian wounded in clash with troops 5/5 dies [WP 5/14]. Palestinian youth shot during demonstration weeks ago dies in Ramallah [NYT 5/14]. Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Qabatiyyah village near Jenin, Palestinian is shot dead while trying to escape army raid [FJ 5/15]. In Jerusalem, border and regular police use rubber bullets and night sticks to disperse stone-throwing Palestinian demonstrators after Friday prayers at Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa mosques; 10 demonstrators are detained and about 20 are arrested; 3 police officers are also injured. Nablus and entire Gaza Strip are under curfew; Ramallah, Hebron, and Bethlehem are declared closed military areas. Worshipers are prevented from attending Gaza City's 'Umar Mosque [WP 5/14; LAT 5/15].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Israeli television interview, Def. Min. Rabin reveals more than 1,000 Palestinian activists have been arrested in past week, bringing total number of Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons to at least 4,400 [WP 3/30; LAT 4/1].

Other Countries: Richard Schifter, U.S. asst. sec. of state for human rights and humanitarian affairs, defends Irael's use of force in occupied territories. Amnesty International cls on Israel to insure Palestinian human rights during 3-day sealing off of territories [WP 3/30].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Army reports violent clash between soldiers and Palestinians in village of Zaytand Tulkarm; about 20 Palestinians are injured by live ammunition, rubber bullets, and tear gas [WP 3/30; FJ 4/3]. Soldiers and protesters clash in Am'ari and Qalandiya camps [FJ 4/3]. Curfews are in force in Jenin camp, nearby Qabatiyyah village, Qalqiliyyah, Zayta, 'Askar camp, and Jalazun camp [FJ 4/3]. Curfew in Gaza Strip is lifted for 1 hour. W. Bank residents are restricted to own communities [WP 3/30].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israel places Gaza Strip under nightly curfew, restricting residents to homes and closing borders from 10 pm to 3 am until further notice; curfew does not apply to Jewish settlers. In response to call from Unified National Command of the Uprising, 200 Gaza policemen resign. In W. Bank, soldiers close Jericho produce market [WP 3/15]. Reports indicate 19 Israeli-appointed village league members from W. Bank have quit recently [CSM 3/14].

Other Countries: P.M. Shamir arrives in Washington, D. C. In speech before United Jewish Appeal Young Leadership Conference, P.M. Shamir says he will introduce "new ideas" to change Sec. of State Shultz's peace plan. U.S. declares plan will not be altered. Shamir holds talks with 3 U.S. senators and meets briefly with Sec. of State Shultz and Sec. of Def. Frank Carlucci [WP, NYT 3/15].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In al-Birah, Israeli soldiers intervene after confrontation between Jewish settlers and two residents; Palestinian child is badly wounded by rubber bullet. In Jenin and nearby village of Yamun, 11 residents are shot, wounded by army gunfire; 9 of wounded are shot while attacking home of collaborator [WP 3/15]. Yamun is ordered under curfew. Authorities erect 50m-long fence in front of Tulkarm camp. Demonstrations continue in Jenin and Jenin refugee camp. In Dhahriyyah village in Hebron district, at least 4 villagers are injured during army raid. Solders said 'Isawiyyah village in Jerusalem district during the night. Several clashes are reported in Ramallah and area villages, including large demonstration in Am'ari camp and 400 Birzeit U. students and faculty members [FJ 3/20].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Sec. of State Shultz flies from Tel Aviv to Damascus to Cairo, presents P.M. Shamir, Pres. al-Asad, and Pres. Mubarak with letters formally detailing U.S. peace proposal. Shultz asks leaders to reply by 3/16 [WP 3/5]. Jerusalem police defuse car bomb found outside hotel where Shultz is staying [NYT 3/5; LAT 3/6].

Arab World: Two British Oxfam workers disappear from Sidon after visiting 'Ayn al-Hilwah refugee camp [WP 3/5].

At least 20 are hospitalized after soldiers break into homes in Jabalya [H 2/28]. Officials at Gaza's Shifa Hospital reportreating 11 wounded by gunshot, about 20 injured by tear gas, beatings. In Tubas near Nablus, soldiers open fire on worshipers leaving mosque after Palestinian throws knife at officer; bystander is shot, killed. Army is investigating whether Hebron resident was killed by tear gas inhalation or gunfire. Army is also investigating death of resident of 'Arrub refugee camp near Bethlehem; hospital sources report he was shot in chest by soldiers. Other Countries: Congressional committee investigating Iran-contra affair releases testimony revealing Lt. Col. Oliver North had budgeted $2.5 million to finance secret U.S.-Israel operations [WP 2/26].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Military raids Qabatiyyah, arrests at least 100 villagers, destroys 2 houses [NYT 2/26]; village remains under curfew [FJ 2/28]. Israeli soldiers use tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition to disperse stone-throwing demonstrators in Jenin; 1 Palestinian is killed, at least 4 wounded [WP 2/26; FJ 2/28]. In Nablus, Palestinian youth is shot dead by army gunfire; 4 others are wounded. Soldiers raid al-Ittihad Hospital in Nablus, beating patients and staff and breaking fumiture [WP 2/26]. Soldiers clash with Palestinian protesters in E. Jerusalem neighborhoods. At least 5 are wounded during clashes in Tulkarm, Balatah refugee camp, and Yatta village near Hebron [NYT 2/26]. Occupied Palestine/Israel: Palestinian teenager is shot, killed by Israeli civilian in Baqa al-Sharqiyyah; civilian is released on bail [FJ 2/28]. General strike continues throughout W. Bank and Gaza Strip [FJ 2/28]. IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Dan Shomron reiterates policy of using physical force, including beatings, against Palestinian protesters; in letter to troop commanders, Shomron also states that beatings are not to be used against those already under arrest or those not resisting arrest. IDF spokesman confirms army is investigating accusations that soldiers beat and buried 2 Gaza Strip youths on beach near Khan Yunis; youths were later rescued [LAT 2/24]. Palestinian leaders from occupied territories confirm no Palestinians will meet with U.S. Sec. of State Shultz without PLO consent [LAT 2/24]. F.M. Village is placed under curfew [FJ 2/28]. In al-Birah, troops arrest, beat demonstrators calling for resignation of Israeli-appointed mayor [FJ 2/28]. At least 1 Palestinian is shot, wounded during clash with Israeli soldiers in Jenin. In Qabatiyyah, 2 Palestinians are shot, wounded when soldiers open fire on demonstrators [WP 2/17]. Army seizes 3 school buildings for military posts in Nablus [FJ 2/21]. Palestinian demonstrators bum tires and throw stones at entrance to Gush Qatif settlement in Gaza. Military Action Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli troops open fire on demonstrators in Gaza Strip's Jenin refugee camp, wounding 1. Curfew on Jabalya is lifted but reimposed after crowds throw Molotov cocktails at Israeli patrol [WP 1/27; FJ 1/31]. In the West Bank, military imposes curfews on village of Qabatiyyah and Jenin camp following violent demonstrations. Curfews imposed on Tulkarm and Bayt 'Ur al-Tahta are lifted; military lifts curfew on Balata, declares camp closed military zone.
