The Palestine Chronology

In the West Bank, 1 Palestinian man was shot to death after allegedly running toward a checkpoint with a knife near Tulkarm. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Kafr Qaddum during their weekly anti-settlement protest, causing several tear-gas related injuries; 1 Spanish activist was arrested. Elsewhere, Israeli forces closed the Ramallah-Nablus road for hours to allow Israeli settlers to use the road for a marathon. Israeli settlers prevented Palestinians from harvesting olives near Burqa. 2 Palestinians were arrested in Jenin during late-night raids, 1 other Palestinian was summoned for interrogation. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces stormed a wedding party in Sur Bahir, resulting in clashes with some of the attendees. In Gaza, 97 Palestinians were injured during the 79th weekly Great March of Return protest, including 35 from live ammunition, 42 from rubber bullets, and others from tear-gas related injuries. In Lebanon, for the 2d day in a row, thousands of protesters demonstrated against the Lebanese government’s plans to raise a new tax for WhatsApp calls and the country’s economic crisis. (AJ, AJ 10/18)

Palestinian economic protests continue in the West Bank, with a public transport strike and demonstrations in a number of cities. In Hebron, protesters throw stones at a police station, and Palestinian riot police fire tear gas. (MNA 9/10)

Freedom Theater director and former al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades (AMB) commander Zakaria Zubeidi begins a hunger strike to protest his detention without charge by the PA since 5/13/12, in connection with the attack on the late Jenin governor Qaddura Musa, who died of a heart attack shortly after the shooting on 5/1/12 (see QU in JPS 164). Israeli naval vessels fire at Palestinian fishermen nr. Bayt Lahiya, causing no injuries. In the West Bank, the IDF patrols in 1 village nr. Tulkarm at night; conducts house searches and arrest raids at night in 1 village nr. Salfit and in alNabi Salih village nr. In the West Bank, the IDF patrols in Jericho, nearby ‘Ayn al-Sultan r.c. and Fasayil village, and 3 villages nr. Ramallah in the morning; and in Jenin in the afternoon. The IDF also conducts late-night arrest raids, house searches nr. Jerusalem, Ramallah, and Tulkarm. Palestinians (accompanied by Israeli and international activists) hold weekly nonviolent demonstrations against the separation wall, land confiscations, and settlement expansion in Bil‘in, Kafr Qaddum, al-Nabi Salih, and Ni‘lin. IDF soldiers fire live ammunition (al-Nabi Salih only), rubber-coated steel bullets, tear gas, and stun grenades at the protesters. A Palestinian in Bil‘in is moderately injured by a rubber-coated steel bullet; 3 Palestinians (including a child) are hit by tear gas canisters in Kafr Qaddum; and 3 internationals and 1 Palestinian are arrested. Unidentified assailants fire 2 Grad rockets from the Egyptian Sinai into Israel, striking n. of Elat, causing no damage or injuries. No group takes responsibility. (HA 6/16, 6/17)

Israeli naval forces fire on Palestinian fishing boats off the n. Gaza coast, wounding 1 fisherman. In the West Bank, the IDF patrols in Tulkarm in the morning, randomly stopping Palestinians to check their IDs; storms an al-Wataniya cell phone transmission tower nr. Jenin, searching the site and surrounding area for 2 hrs.; uproots 400 d. of Palestinian olive trees nr. Nablus, hauling them away; patrols in Jiftlik village nr. Jenin and nearby Aqabat Jabir and ‘Ayn al-Sultan r.c. in the evening; conducts late-night patrols and arrest raids in Birzeit and nr. Salfit. Hamas authorities violently disperse a demonstration by students at al-Quds Open University calling for national reconciliation, killing 1 Palestinian student. In Syria, where there have been a handful of small antigovernment actions since 2/16, 200 protesters (students, activists, families of prisoners) gather outside the Interior Min. to demand the release of political prisoners. Security forces storm the gathering, arresting 36, including a 10-yr.-old boy. Meanwhile, Syrian activists have organized a Facebook fan page online (with more than 47,000 fans) called “The Syrian Revolution 2011,” calling for massive protests after Friday prayers on 3/18. In Bahrain, govt. soldiers firing tear gas and rubber bullets and backed by tanks and helicopters clear Manama’s Pearl Square of protesters and remove a tent city that has been in place for weeks; 3 protesters and 2 security officers are killed. (NYT, WP, WT 3/17)

The IDF makes a brief incursion into s. Gaza e. of Khuza village to level land and clear lines of sight, firing on nearby residential areas to keep Palestinians away. In the West Bank, the IDF patrols in 3 villages nr. Salfit, 2 nr. Qalqilya, 1 nr. Jenin, and 1 nr. Ramallah, photographing several homes in Hijja village nr. Qalqilya, stopping several Palestinians on the street in ‘Azun village nr. Qalqilya and summoning them for interrogation, and firing rubber bullets and tear gas at stone-throwing youths who confront them in Nabi Salih village nr. Ramallah, arresting 1. Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Jenin refugee camp 21-year-old man is killed by a rubber bullet. In the 'Ayn al-Sultan camp, 18- year-old dies as soldiers fire on stonethrowers [NYT 6/14, FJ 6/19]. In Duhayshah the body of a 12-year-old boy is found in a pool. At the boy's funeral a 40-year-man suffocates after tear gas is fired [FJ 6/19]. Three firebombs are thrown in a shopping mall in Tel Aviv [NYT 6/14]. Orchards and cornfields are set ablaze near Tulkarm [FJ 6/19].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Israeli television interview, Def. Min. Rabin reveals more than 1,000 Palestinian activists have been arrested in past week, bringing total number of Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons to at least 4,400 [WP 3/30; LAT 4/1].

Other Countries: Richard Schifter, U.S. asst. sec. of state for human rights and humanitarian affairs, defends Irael's use of force in occupied territories. Amnesty International cls on Israel to insure Palestinian human rights during 3-day sealing off of territories [WP 3/30].

Other Countries: P.M. Shamir arrives in Washington, D. C. In speech before United Jewish Appeal Young Leadership Conference, P.M. Shamir says he will introduce "new ideas" to change Sec. of State Shultz's peace plan. U.S. declares plan will not be altered. Shamir holds talks with 3 U.S. senators and meets briefly with Sec. of State Shultz and Sec. of Def. Frank Carlucci [WP, NYT 3/15].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In al-Birah, Israeli soldiers intervene after confrontation between Jewish settlers and two residents; Palestinian child is badly wounded by rubber bullet. In Jenin and nearby village of Yamun, 11 residents are shot, wounded by army gunfire; 9 of wounded are shot while attacking home of collaborator [WP 3/15]. Yamun is ordered under curfew. Authorities erect 50m-long fence in front of Tulkarm camp. Demonstrations continue in Jenin and Jenin refugee camp. In Dhahriyyah village in Hebron district, at least 4 villagers are injured during army raid. Solders said 'Isawiyyah village in Jerusalem district during the night.
