In the West Bank, Israeli settlers shoot and kill a Palestinian-owned camel in ‘Arab al-Rashayida. Israeli forces shoot and kill a Palestinian man during a raid in Bir al-Basha. Israeli forces also raid Jenin, uprooting streets and demolishing a monument to Palestinians killed by Israeli forces. Elsewhere, Israeli forces demolish an agricultural structure in Azzun ‘Atma. Israeli forces also seal off entrances to Jericho. 24 Palestinians are arrested during late-night raids in and around Ramallah, Hebron, Nablus, Tulkarm, and Tubas. In Gaza, Israeli forces bomb Gaza City, Khan Yunis, Rafah, al-Bureij refugee camp, and Nuseirat refugee camp, killing at least 200 people. Israeli forces also fire using live ammunition and tank shells at Palestinians waiting in line for food aid in Gaza City, killing 20 and wounding 150. An Israeli soldier is killed in combat. More than 25,900 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, including at least 10,600 children and 7,200 women, and around 64,110 have been injured since 10/7. At least 7,000 people are missing in rubble, including 1,700 children. 365 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since 10/7, including 92 children. More than 4,354 people have been injured. Israel reports that 1,139 Israelis and foreign nationals have been killed and 5,400 have been injured in Israel since 10/7, including Israeli soldiers. In addition, 219 Israeli soldiers have been killed and 1,250 injured in Gaza since the ground invasion began on 10/27. Over 1.93 million Palestinians, nearly 85% of the population of Gaza, have been displaced since 10/7. There has been a complete electricity blackout in Gaza since 10/12 due to the Israeli blockade. At least 70,000 housing units have been destroyed and 290,000 have been damaged in Israeli airstrikes since 10/7, constituting over 60% of all housing units. 153 trucks carrying aid enter Gaza via the Rafah crossing. UK prime minister Rishi Sunak tells the parliamentary group Conservative Friends of Israel that those “who chant ‘from the river to the sea’ are either useful idiots who do not understand what they are saying, or worse, people who wish to wipe the Jewish state from the map.” (AJ 1/26)

Finnish foreign minister Elina Valtonen says the time for Israel’s “self-defense is over,” saying “enough is enough, the civilian population in Gaza needs an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.” (HA 1/25)

The Financial Times reports that the Israeli government has written to foreign diplomatic missions in Israel asking if they have backup generators and satellite phones in case of a ‘security escalation.’ (AJ 1/25)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces shot and killed 1 Palestinian man during a raid in Izbat Shufa. 12 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in al-Ram, Bayt Sira, Bir al-Basha, Izbat Shufa, Hebron, and Wadi Rahal; 1 minor was injured by a baton round during the raid in al-Ram. The Palestinian Prisoners Club said that it and the Israel Prison Service had reached an agreement to halt planned mass hunger strikes during Ramadan in exchange for Israel not worsening their living conditions and rolling back limitations on hot water for showers. (HA, WAFA 3/23; HA 3/24)

In Israel, hundreds of thousands of Israelis protested across the country against the government as the Knesset passed an amendment to the Basic Law on Government to prevent the attorney general from declaring the prime minister unfit for office. Former Prime Minister Yair Lapid called the amendment despicable and Labor Party leader Merav Michaeli called the moment “our second War of Independence.” The passing of the amendment was seen as the first step in the Israeli government’s plan to overhaul the judicial system. In the West Bank, Israeli forces issued a notification to the Deir Istiya municipality that Israel will seize 45 dunams (11.2 acres) of land. Israeli forces also issued stop work notices for 8 residential and commercial structures in Deir Balut. 6 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Arrabah, Ajjah, Bir al-Basha, Bani Na’im, and Beit Fajjar. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers toured the Haram al-Sharif compound. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire at Palestinian fishermen 6 nautical miles west off the shore; no injuries were reported. Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smotrich of the Religious Zionist Party resigned his seat in the Knesset, allowing fellow Religious Zionist Party member Zvi Sukkot to take his place. Sukkot, who lives in the Yitzhar settlement, is one of the founders of the Evyatar settlement outpost and has been arrested for terrorist attacks on Palestinians and temporarily expelled from the West Bank for planning terrorist attacks against Palestinians. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers with a military escort raided Jurish, injuring 4 and damaging 15 vehicles. 2 Palestinians were injured by Israeli forces firing baton rounds while confronting the settlers. Israeli settlers also vandalized 25 olive tree saplings in al-Khader. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers with a military escort raided Qaryut, leading to a confrontation between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers; 3 were injured by baton rounds and others by tear gas. Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 5 with baton rounds and others with tear gas. Israeli forces also shot and injured 1 Palestinian trying to enter Israel for work at the separation wall near Tulkarm. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in the Masafer Yatta area, causing tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Bayt Dajan and Beita, causing tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces evacuated the Or Haim settlement outpost near Jurish after Israeli settlers erected the outpost earlier in the day. In the West Bank, the body of 1 Druze citizen of Israel was kidnapped for a 2nd time after it was arranged that the body would be transferred to Israel in a Red Crescent ambulance. The ambulance was stopped by armed men and the body taken to an unknown location. The Druze man was taken from a hospital in Jenin on 11/22. Hundreds of Palestinians marched in Jenin calling for the release of the body to his family. 1 Palestinian man succumbed to injuries sustained by Israeli live fire during a raid in Nablus in July. Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian vehicles near al-Bireh, causing damage. Israeli settlers also set fire to 1 Palestinian vehicle and threw stones at a house in Burin, causing damage. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian vehicles traveling near Huwwara, causing damage. Israeli forces shot and killed 1 Palestinian minor during a raid in Nablus and injured 4 others. Israeli forces also demolished 1 Palestinian school serving 22 Palestinian children in the Masafer Yatta area. Elsewhere, the Israeli Nature Authority seized 12 Palestinian-owned cows near Umm al-Ghabar in the Jordan Valley. Israeli forces delivered stop-work orders against 11 residential structures and ordered the demolition of 20 agricultural structures near Jericho, delivered stop-work orders against 2 houses in ‘Azzun, a demolition notice against a house under construction in Forush Bayt Dajan, and demolished 1 house in al-Khader. In the West Bank, 1 Israeli settler stabbed and killed 1 Palestinian man in Iskaka after the Palestinian man, along with others, confronted Israeli settlers erecting a settlement outpost near the Ariel settlement. According to eyewitnesses, there were Israeli soldiers at the scene when the man was stabbed, and they were said to have prevented Palestinians from providing the victim aid. Israeli forces arrested 1 Israeli settler on 6/22, suspected of having carried out the stabbing. Israeli settlers also threw stones at Palestinian herders in Kisan. Israeli forces shot and injured 2 Palestinians during a raid in Qabatiya. Israeli forces also delivered 1 demolition notice against 1 house under construction and stop-work orders for 8 other homes in Jalbun. 18 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Surda, Kobar, Jalazun refugee camp, Qabatiya, Bir al-Basha, Beit Furik, Tubas, al-Ram, and Tuqu‘. Reuters reported that Hamas had decided to restore ties with Syria and that Hamas sources told the news outlet that several “high-profile meetings [had been held] to achieve that goal.” (REU 6/21)

Israeli interior minister Ayelet Shaked met with Moroccan officials, including foreign minister Nasser Bourita, In Rabat. During Interior Minister Shaked’s trip, she expressed support for Morocco’s sovereignty claims to Western Sahara and worked on negotiations to allow Moroccan construction workers and nurses to work in Israel to bolster the 2 countries’ normalization deal. Iranian media reported that Iran had arrested 3 Mossad-linked agents in April who were planning on assassinating Iranian scientists. (HA, REU 6/21)

Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt signed an agreement to transfer 650 million cubic meters of gas from Egypt to Lebanon via Syria, adding around 4 extra hours of power to the electric grid per day. (AP, HA, REU 6/21)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers uprooted 170 olive trees in al-Lubban ash-Sharqiya and set 1 vehicle on fire in Asira al-Qibliya, writing “Jewish blood is not cheap” on nearby walls. Israeli settlers also opened fire on Palestinian vehicles driving near the Migdal Oz settlement. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian vehicles near the al-Hamra checkpoint, smashing the windshields on 5 vehicles. Israeli settlers also threw stones at 1 Palestinian vehicle near Jericho, injuring the driver. Meanwhile, Israeli settlers stopped a Palestinian taxi driver near the Dead Sea before beating him. The Israeli cities of Netanya, Ramle, Holon, and Givatayim suspended construction and gardening work at public schools in an apparent effort to limit work by Palestinian laborers. Ramat Gan’s mayor also told building contractors in the city to end work on sites that “rely on Arab labor.” In addition, the Israeli military banned the entry of Palestinian workers into Israeli settlements. The restrictions on Palestinian workers come as 3 different attacks were carried out in Israel over the past week, including 2 by Palestinian citizens of Israel and 1 by a Palestinian from the West Bank. Israel’s security cabinet decided to revoke work permits for relatives of Palestinians who have attacked Israelis and pushed forward a plan to reinforce the separation barrier. Israeli police also asked the security cabinet to limit access to the Haram al-Sharif compound to Muslim worshippers 60 and older—a request the security cabinet did not immediately respond to. Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian vehicles near Sabastia and closed a road between Jenin and Nablus. Israeli settlers with military escort also closed an entry to al-Lubban al-Sharqiya. Israeli forces shot and injured 5 Palestinian protesters with rubber-coated bullets at a checkpoint near Birzeit University; others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also uprooted 40 dunams (9.9 acres) of land planted with olive and almond saplings, demolished agricultural structures in Battir, and demolished 1 residential tent in Bayt Jala, displacing 6. 9 Palestinians were arrested during raids in Beit Sahour, Dheisheh refugee camp, Tulkarm, Bir al-Basha, Jaba‘, and Kobar. The Israeli supreme court ruled that the Israeli interior ministry cannot continue to deny Palestinians married to Israeli citizens residency rights, using a temporary ban that expired in July 2021. In the West Bank, Israeli forces delivered demolition notices for 6 agricultural structures and 1 residential structure and delivered stop-work orders for 2 houses and a water well in Wadi Rahal. Israeli forces also raided Khirbet Humsa, seizing tools and tents used for agricultural purposes. 10 Palestinians were arrested, including 8 during late-night raids in and around Tuqu’, Hebron, Beit Umar, and Bir al-Basha, and 2 were arrested at a checkpoint near Jenin. Israel’s civil administration advanced, for the 1st time during the U.S. Biden administration, settlement units to be built in the West Bank. 2,860 housing units were approved in Har Brakha, Revava, Elon Moreh, Hermesh, Karnei Shomron, Beit El, Givat Ze’ev, Kefar Etzion, Alon Shvut, Teneh, Sansana, Vered Yericho, Ma’aleh Mikhmash, Efrat, Tal Manashe, Talmon, Shima’a, and Kedumim. The approval also included the retroactive approval of units in Elon Moreh, Alei Zahav, Peduel, and Eli, and the “legalization” of the Mitzpe Danny outpost and an outpost in Haroeh Haivri. PA prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh met with EU officials, including the high representative for foreign affairs Josep Borrell in Brussels. Prime Minister Shtayyeh called on the EU to take concrete steps to end Israeli settlement expansion. Shtayyeh also called on the EU to recognize the State of Palestine. Florida’s boycott of the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream company’s parent company Unilever went into effect after a 90-day period given to the company to reverse Ben & Jerry’s decision to stop selling ice cream in West Bank settlements and to end its franchise agreement in Israel. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers opened fire at 1 Palestinian-owned house in Hebron, causing damage, and vandalized 3 Palestinian-owned vehicles. Israeli settlers also uprooted 50 olive seedlings in Kisan. Israeli forces violently dispersed a protest in Beita, injuring 1 journalist with a rubber-coated bullet. Israeli forces also violently dispersed a protest in Beit Umar; no serious injuries were reported. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 3 with rubber-coated bullets. Israeli forces also arrested in Arrabah 3 siblings of 1 of the 6 Palestinians who escaped the Gilboa prison on 9/6 and 2 cousins of another escapee in Bir al-Basha. 3 others were arrested during late-night raids in and around al-Arroub refugee camp, Hebron, and al-Lubban ash-Sharqiya. In East Jerusalem, 1 Israeli settler opened fire at Palestinians in al-Ram; no injuries were reported. Israeli forces shot and killed 1 Palestinian man by the Lion’s Gate in the Old City, claiming that he had tried to stab an Israeli soldier; 1 Israeli soldier was lightly injured by a stray bullet fired by another Israeli soldier. Israeli forces let the man bleed to death without providing aid. Israeli forces also forcefully removed Palestinians during a sit-in protest at the Haram al-Sharif compound, arresting 3. In Gaza, 1 rocket was launched at Israel and was intercepted, after 2 of the Palestinian escapees were arrested. Israel subsequently conducted air strikes at 3 different locations in Khan Yunis and Dayr al-Balah; causing damage. Qatar’s ambassador to Gaza Mohammed al-Emadi said that the PA no longer will partake in facilitating getting Qatari aid to Palestinians in Gaza because of fears that banks in the West Bank could be exposed to lawsuits as Hamas is considered a terrorist organization in several countries. In the West Bank, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinians protesting in solidarity with the 6 prisoners who escaped from Gilboa prison on 9/6 in Huwwara, Hebron, Burqa, Qalqilya, Ramallah, Bethlehem, and al-Bireh, leading to dozens of tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also raided Ya‘bad, Arabbuna, ‘Anin, Faqqua, and Bir al-Basha searching for the escapees and harassing their families and friends; 7 were injured by rubber-coated bullets and 17 suffered tear-gas related injuries; 5 relatives of escapees were arrested during the raids. Islamic Jihad prisoners torched 8 cells in the Qetziot prison and 2 cells in the Ramon prison and clashed with guards after being told that the Israeli prison service would move them to other prisons as collective punishment for the prison escape by 6 Palestinians on 9/6. The Israeli government gave its initial approval for the construction of more than 2,000 new settlement units in the West Bank and 863 housing units for Palestinian villages in Area C, including 150 units in Ma‘asara, 270 in Bir al-Basha, 223 in al-Masqufa, 160 in Khirbet ‘Aaba, and 50 in Khirbet Zakariya. Of the advanced settlement expansion plans, 908 are expected to get final approval next week, including 58 in Beit El, 285 in Har Brakha, and 105 in Alon Shvut. An Israeli official told Haaretz that the move was a “calculated risk” made by the government vis-à-vis the U.S. Biden administration. IDF chief of staff Aviv Kochavi said the Israeli army will take harsher measures against Israeli soldiers who do not follow regulations, in response to the killing of 40 Palestinians by Israeli forces in the West Bank since May. The statement came after Chief of Staff Kochavi met with senior staff of the Israeli central command on 8/8 and urged them to take steps to reduce lethal shootings. Israel’s police commissioner Kobi Shabtai inaugurated a new police department focused on combatting crime in Palestinian Israeli communities, which seeks to increase the number of Palestinian Israeli police officers by 300%. 69 Palestinian citizens of Israel have been killed in Israel since 2021 and only 23% of the cases have been solved, whereas 71% of the cases involving Jewish Israelis have been solved by Israeli police. Israeli foreign minister Yair Lapid visited Morocco to meet with his Moroccan counterpart and open the new Israeli mission to Morocco as part of the 2 countries’ normalization deal.
