Arab World: Near S. Lebanon village of Barashit, inside Israeli security zone, 2 Israeli soldiers are killed, several others wounded in rocket attack [NYT 2/24]

Occupied Palestine/Israel: F.M. Peres confirms he wrote Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III in 1985 about Iraqi oil pipeline project [LAT 2/22]. Peres states continued support for intemational conference but rejects role for U.S.S.R. [LAT 2/22]. UN officials charge Jerusalem police and border guards conducted 2 extensive raids in Shu'fat 2/20 and 2/21, beating residents and damaging property [WP 2/22]. Police reinforcements are deployed in Jerusalem in preparation for Sec. of State Shultz's visit [LAT 2/22]. Palestinian youth from Galilee is fined IS 1,500 and sentenced to 3 months imprisonment for raising Palestinian flag and participating in illegal demonstration 12/21 [FJ 2/28].

Arab World: According to diplomats in Cairo, PLO has withdrawn threat to abandon Cairo declaration (promising not to attack Israelis outside of Israel and the occupied territories) [NYT 2/22].

Other Countries: Palestinian journalist Hanna Siniora travels to Rome to meet with PLO officials about lifting ban on talks with Shultz [NYT 2/22].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Dayr 'Ammar refugee camp near Ramallah, Palestinian is shot, killed; army says shots may have been fired by settlers [LAT 2/22]. Israeli soldiers shoot, wound Palestinian during apparent knife attack on Israeli patrol in Nablus; youth also allegedly involved in attack is killed and 4 others wounded. Army drops tear gas from helicopters to break up crowds at funeral [FJ 2/28]. At least 6 Palestinians are wounded by live ammunition during clashes in Jenin-area town of Qabatiyyah and Gaza's Khan Yunis camp [WP, LAT 2/22]. Khan Yunis is ordered under curfew. Gaza hospital officials report treating 50 for gunshot wounds, beating injuries [FJ 2/28]. Rabin to issue strict guidelines allowing soldiers to use physical force only when dispersing demonstrations and making arrests [WP 2/23]. About 200 Muslims attempt to pray at Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron, clash with Jewish worshipers [WP 2/21]. Police arrest Mutawakil Sa'id Taha, head of writers union in occupied territories [FJ 2/21]. Policemen attack 9 Palestinian workers in their Tel Aviv apartment [FJ 2/28].

Arab World: PLO issues statement forbidding Palestinians to meet with Sec. of State Shultz [NYT 2/22]. In Cairo, 300 worshipers leaving mosque chant antiIsrael slogans in spontaneous demonstration [NYT 2/22].

Other Countries: Washington Post reports U.S. Justice Department officials believe Israel had another spy in the CIA or Defense Department in addition to Jonathan Pollard [WP 2/19].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli soldiers and Palestinian protesters clash in Nablus and Ramallah. Demonstrations are also reported in Gaza City's Sha'jiyyah quarter and Burayj and Jabalya camps [WP 2/20; FJ 2/21]. Curfews continue in Beach, Jalazun, and Am'ari camps and Bayt Ur al-Tahta [FJ 2/21].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Commercial strike continues in occupied territories; W. Bank shops open for 3 hours [FJ 2/21]. Israel closes Tariq al-Sharara, Hebrew-Arabic newspaper published by Nitzotz/al-Sharara Organization inside the green line [FJ 2/21]. Shin Bet agent is charged with causing death of 'Awad Hamdan while in Jenin prison [LAT 2/19]. Israel imposes new economic restrictions on Palestinians in occupied territories: Palestinians will be required to prove they have paid their taxes before traveling abroad or importing or exporting goods, and transactions of $1,000 or more must be registered [LAT 2/19]. British Labor party leader Neil Kinnock visits Gaza Strip refugee camps, describes strip as "vast slum," and accuses Israeli soldiers of using excessive force [NYT 2/19].

Arab World: Egypt requests death sentence in absentia for Khalid 'Abd al-Nasir, son of late Pres. Gamal 'Abd al-Nasir and accused leader of Egypt's Revolution, in connection with 1984-86 attacks on Israeli and U.S. diplomats. Nasir is believed to be in Yugoslavia [WP 2/18].

Other Countries: At UN, Arab representatives formally request emergency session of Gen. Assembly to discuss U.S. plan to close PLO observer mission [NYT 2/19].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Soldiers break windows and fire tear gas during raid of Shu'fat camp. Clashes are reported in Duhayshah camp, Nablus, Jenin, and Gaza City. Al-Quds reports IDF has begun using new plastic clubs that are less likely to break than wooden clubs [FJ 2/2 1]. Curfews are in effect in Qalqiliyyah, Bayt Ur al-Tahta, Idna, and Balatah, Am'ari, Jalazun, Beach, and Tulkarm camps. Entrances to Ramallah-area village of Kafr Malik are closed [FJ 2/21].

Occupied territories' civil administration lowers limit on amount of money that can be brought into W. Bank from Jordan [NYT 2/17]. Maj. Gen. Ehud Barak, Israel's deputy chief of staff and Def. Min. Rabin confirm soldiers buried 4 Palestinians alive 2/5 [WP 2/17]. Rabin announces his intention to establish military appeals court in occupied territories [CSM 2/17]. In Tel Aviv, 800 attend conference organized by Israeli intellectuals demanding Israeli government begin peace talks with Palestinians [NYT 2/18]. Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli riot police halt bus carrying Palestinian high school students from Haifa to Umm al-Fahm; several students are beaten. At least 1 Palestinian is shot, wounded during clash with Israeli soldiers in Jenin. In Qabatiyyah, 2 Palestinians are shot, wounded when soldiers open fire on demonstrators [WP 2/17]. Army seizes 3 school buildings for military posts in Nablus [FJ 2/21]. Palestinian demonstrators bum tires and throw stones at entrance to Gush Qatif settlement in Gaza. In Rafah camp 4 are wounded in clash with soldiers [FJ 2/21]. In Sura and Majd villages, near Hebron, protesters bum Israeli buses. Occupied Palestine/Israel: Several cars are set afire in Jewish neighborhood in Jerusalem [WP 2/15]. Palestinian dies of injuries resulting from army beating in Gaza City [NYT 2/16]. Seventh leaflet signed by PLO and Unified National Command for the Uprising in the Occupied Territories begins circulating in occupied territories [FJ 2/21].

Other Countries: In Washington meeting to discuss new U.S. peace proposal, Israeli envoy Ehud Olmert warns U. S. State Dept. official Charles Hill that P. M. Shamir will never accept land for peace principle [WP 2/16]. In Cypriot port of Limassol, bomb blast kills 3 PLO officials [NYT 2/15].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Majdal Shams, 1,600 police use tear gas to disperse stonethrowing Druze demonstrating to protest 1982 Israeli annexation of Golan Heights; about 20 are arrested [WP 2/15]. Elderly man beaten by soldiers 2/8 in Nablus dies in hospital [NYT 2/13; FJ 2/14].

Other Countries: U.S. State Dept. announces Sec. of State George Shultz will visit Middle East to discuss reinvigorating peace process. Shultz meets with Arab Am. leaders, who express doubts about U.S. proposals [WP 2/13]. PLO officials in Athensay plan to sail ship of Palestinian deportees is being stalled because of Israeli pressure on government, shipowners, and crews [WP 2/12].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Tulkarm refugee camp, troops clash with residents, who believe settlers are attacking camp. Palestinian is shot, killed [FJ 2/14]. In village of Bita, south of Nablus, soldiers break into houses, beat residents, break furniture; 8 villagers are seriously wounded. At least 6 are hospitalized for army-inflicted beatings following raid of Tarqumiyyah village in Hebron district. Troops use tear gas to disperse crowd of demonstrators in Jerusalem's Old City. Curfews continue in Tulkarm, 'Anabta, Qalqiliyyah, Bayt Ummar, and Bayt 'Ur al-Tahta. In Gaza Strip, child is wounded by rubber bullet in Gaza City. Occupied Palestine/Israel: IDF patrol captures 3 armed fighters who crossed Egyptian border [NYT 2/12]. In village of Salim, near Nablus, troops and settlers beat 4 Palestinian youths, force them to remove stone barricade, then use bulldozer to bury them alive. Unconscious youths are dug out by villagers [NYT 2/14]. Curfews remain in effect in 'A'idah camp, Nablus region, Tulkarm, Tulkarm camp, village of Thinabbah, and 9 other camps and cities. 'Azzah camp is declared closed military zone [FJ 2/7]. Worshipers stone police during demonstration outside Dome of the Rock Mosque; 6 Palestinians are wounded. 'Izz al-Din al-'Aryan, sec. of Red Crescent Society in occupied territories, is served 3-month administrative detention order [FJ 2/7].

Arab World: Reports indicate Jordan's King Hussein has reservations about new U.S. proposal to restart peace negotiations because proposal contains "nothing new" [WP 2/2; NYT 2/3].

Other Countries: In Athens, PLO officials announce plan to charter ship, return Palestinian deportees to Israel [NYT 2/3]. U.S. officials state new peace proposal includes U.S. -mediated Israeli-Jordanian negotiations by September to achieve limited Palestinian self-rule in W. Bank and Gaza Strip and direct negotiations in December to reach final settlement on territories [WP 2/3]. In New York, U.S. veto defeats UN Security Council resolution demanding Israel abide by terms of 4th Geneva Convention and calling for international conference on Arab-Israeli dispute [FJ 2/7].
