Occupied Palestine/Israel: Curfews are in effect in 18 towns and camps in occupied territories. Palestinian is shot dead during clash in Qabatiyyah [WP 4/24; FJ 5/1]. Severe food shortages are reported inBayta village, Jalazun camp, and Nablus-area village of Yamun; villages remain sealed [FJ 5/1]. In Misha village, near Qalqiliyyah, 2 are injured by army gunfire during fierce clash. Arab World: PLO announces Khalil al-Wazir will be buried in Syria. Tunisian govemment officially blames Israel for assassination of Wazir [WP 4/19].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: IDF patrol kills 3 Palestinian commandos who crossed Lebanese border north of Kafr Yuval [NYT 4/14]. In Gaza demonstrators protest expulsion of 8 Palestinians. In Jabalya, 2 are wounded by gunfire, and UN clinic reports elderly woman suffocated from tear gas. At least 51 are injured by rubber bullets, tear gas, and beatings. Curfews are imposed in Jabalya, Nusayrat, and Khan Yunis camps; curfews continue in Beach and Dayr alBalah camps [FJ 4/17]. In W. Bank's Asirah al-Shamaliyyah village, 9 demonstrators are shot, wounded in clash with troops. Protesters demonstrate in Nablus, Balatah camp, and Hebron-district villages of Bayt Awwa and Dhahriyyah. Israeli sources report 70 Palestinians are arrested in early morning raid of Salfit village, near Nablus. Curfews are lifted in Yamun, Silat al-Harthiyyah, and Maythalun villages [FJ 4/17].

Arab World: In Kasara, Lebanon, 8 Palestinians deported 4/11 announce they will stage sit-in strike at Red Cross offices [NYT 4/13].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Palestinians in occupied territories protest expulsion of 8 Palestinians 4/11. Curfews are imposed in Beach and Jabalya camps after clashes in which tear gas, gravel, and marbles were fired on demonstrators from army helicopter; 1 Palestinian is wounded by army gunfire in Jabalya. UN and hospital officials in Gaza City report treating 42 Palestinians for injuries from beatings, rubber bullets, and tear gas inhalation [NYT 4/13; FJ 4/17]. In W. Bank village of Asirah al-Shamaliyyah, 3 Palestinians are injured by live ammunition. In Ramallah-district village of Kafr Malik, soldiers raid houses during night; 5 are shot, wounded in violent clash. Army uses bulldozers to block village entrances with rocks. Several hundred are detained in mass arrests in occupied territories [FJ 4/17]. 

Social/Economic/Political Occupied Palestine/Israel: Likud ministers David Levy and Ariel Sharon criticize IDF Chief of Staff Dan Shomron; Sharon demands demolition of all houses in Bayta, except those belonging to those who aided Israeli youths, and establishment of new settlement near village [WP 4/11]. Army spokesman announces it is investigating Palestinian charges that soldiers used bulldozers to damage more than 70 shops and houses in Bayt Ummar on 4/8. Army bulldozes 7 acres of olive trees near Bayta village [WP 4/11]. Israeli youths from group involved in Bayta clash meet with Trade Minister Sharon, criticize army's report of incident [NYT 4/11].

Other Countries: During meeting in Moscow, Gen. Sec. Mikhail Gorbachev urges PLO Chairman Yasir Arafat to recognize Israel's right to exist [WP 4/11].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli troops and Palestinians clash in several Jenin-district villages and camps. At least 86 are injured or affected by tear gas in Gaza Strip. At Jabalya refugee camp, protesters attack military post for 4th consecutive day. Demonstrations also erupt in Beach camp, Gaza City, and Rafah. Am'ari, Balatah, Jalazun, and 'Ayn Bayt al-Ma' camps as well as Bayta and Sa'ir villages are under curfew. Food shortages reported in Jalazun and Am'ari camps. Maythalun, Silat al-Harthiyyah, and Yamun are sealed off and report food shortages [FJ 4/17].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli army reports 15-year-old Israeli killed 4/6 died when bullet from M-16 rifle carried by Israeli guard struck her in head. Investigation has also shown guard, who was banned by army from Nablus, killed 1 Palestinian and wounded another before Israeli group reached Bayta village. Some villagers reacted to news of killing by attacking the Israelis with stones. Guard was wounded by rock thrown at head. Villagers took guards' guns and broke them. Other Palestinians tried to hide Israeli youths. Soldiers later broke into Bayta hospital, beating patients in search for those suspected of involvement in clash [NYT 4/9].

Arab World: Sec. of State Shultz leaves Amman, travels to Cyprus for brief meeting with Lebanese pres. Amin Jumayyil before ending 6-day Middle East visit [NYT 4/9].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Army blows up 8 houses in Bayta village [NYT 4/9]. Protesters and soldiers clash in Nablus and Jenin. In Gaza Strip, 5 Palestinians are injured by army gunfire in Jabalya; 2 are shot, wounded in Maghazi camp [FJ 4/10].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Gaza City, 3 Palestinians are killed and 2 soldiers slightly injured: army claims soldiers were trying to rescue alleged collaborator from mob and opened fire in self-defense; Palestinians claim family members were coming to rescue youth being arrested when troops opened fire, killing 3 and wounding 1 [WP 4/3]. In Bethlehem violent demonstration erupts after soldiers attempto break commercial strike; soldiers use tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition to disperse youths throwing rocks, bottles, and Molotov cocktails; Palestinian is shot, wounded, and later dies. Protesters rally in streets after funeral, smashing windows at municipality building and demanding Mayor Ilyas Furayj's resignation [WP 4/3]. Two Palestinians are shot dead by soldiers in Ramallah-area villages of Bayt Liqya and Dayr Sudan [WP 4/3]. Gaza Strip's Jabalya, Beach, and Nusayrat camps are under curfew.
