Separately, 1 Palestinian minor was injured by live ammunition during clashes when Israeli forces raided al-‘Arub refugee camp. Israeli forces also seized tents and a solar panel west of Jericho and demolished 1 animal barn and seized water pipes in the northern Jordan Valley. Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian-owned vehicles near Burin. 5 Palestinians were arrested during raids in Beita and Kafr Qaddum; during 1 raid Israeli forces also seized 1 vehicle. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire on Palestinian fishermen 3 nautical miles west of Bayt Lahiya; no injuries were reported. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinian shepherds east of Dayr al-Balah and on agricultural lands east of Rafah; no injuries were reported. In Israel, Israeli forces arrested 10 Palestinian citizens of Israel in Wadi Ara who were protesting the killing of 1 Palestinian suffering from mental illness on 5/13. In the West Bank, 1 Palestinian minor was killed and 4 others wounded by Israeli forces using live ammunition during a late-night raid in al-Fawar refugee camp. Elsewhere, Israeli forces raided Nabi Salih and Ya‘bad throughout the day, leading to 1 Palestinian being wounded by live ammunition and others suffering tear-gas related injuries; 1 Israeli soldier was killed during a raid in Ya‘bad on 5/12. Israeli settlers sprayed racist graffiti on walls in Bil‘in. 22 Palestinians were arrested during raids in and around Ya‘bad, Bethlehem, Hebron, Bayt Furik, and Jericho. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces arrested 2 Palestinian fishermen and seized their boat 3 nautical miles west of Gaza City. In Israel, 1 Palestinian citizen of Israel, who suffered from mental illness, was killed by hospital security guards. The man had pulled out a knife while at the hospital for an examination but did not use it; when he got in a car, hospital security guards pulled him out and he lightly injured 1 guard, to which guards responded by shooting him 5 times while he was lying incapacitated on the ground. U.S. secretary of state Mike Pompeo visited Israel, where he met with Benjamin Netanyahu, Benny Gantz, Gabi Ashkenazi, and Director of the Mossad Yossi Cohen. The new Israeli government is set to be sworn in on May 14 with Netanyahu as prime minister, Benny Gantz as defense minister, and Gabi Ashkenazi as foreign minister. It was reported that Pompeo discussed Iran, COVID-19, and the Trump administration’s peace plan, as Israel is gearing up to discuss annexation of parts of the West Bank in June. (AJ, HA 5/13)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces demolished 1 car wash under construction and a plant nursery near Bethlehem. Israeli forces also shot and injured 1 Palestinian near Tulkarm by the separation wall before arresting him. Another 6 Palestinians were arrested in raids in and around Tulkarm, Jenin, Bethlehem, Ramallah, and Jericho. Israeli settlers vandalized 14 Palestinian-owned vehicles and wrote graffiti on walls near Nablus. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers destroyed 24 olive trees north of Qalqilya. In East Jerusalem, 3 Palestinian minors were arrested and beaten in the Old City. The chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court (ICC) Fatou Bensouda reiterated her position that Palestine is a state under the court’s jurisdiction, which would allow investigations of alleged war crimes committed in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza. 3 ICC judges must now decide on the matter. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian woman from Issawiyya died of the COVID-19 virus, marking the 1st Palestinian COVID-19 fatality in East Jerusalem. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire on Palestinian fishermen 2 nautical miles west of Bayt Lahiya and 4 nautical miles northwest of Gaza City; 1 boat was damaged by live ammunition and no injuries were reported. In the West Bank, Israeli forces sealed off an entrance to al-Jaba‘ and closed an agricultural road south of Hebron. Elsewhere, Israeli forces demolished 1 floor of a 2-story Palestinian-owned house in Hizma. 3 Palestinians were arrested during raids in and around Jericho and Bethlehem. For the 2d day in a row, Israeli forces injured a Palestinian minor in Issawiyya: a 10-year-old boy was shot by a rubber-coated bullet while standing on his balcony. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers razed Palestinian-owned tracts of land in Qusra, using bulldozers. 8 Palestinians were arrested, including 5 during late-night raids in and around Tulkarm, al-Bireh, Jenin, and Jericho; 3, all minors, were arrested after allegedly throwing stones at Israeli forces near Qalqilya. In East Jerusalem, 3 were arrested during late-night raids in the Old City. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers uprooted some 200 olive trees and 80 vine trees in al-Khadir. Israeli forces demolished 2 residential structures and 2 animal barns south of Hebron; and 1 house and 1 workshop in al-Walaja. 12 Palestinians were arrested in and around Hebron, Jenin, Qalqilya, and Ramallah. 1 Fatah official from Jericho was placed in 6-month administrative detention without charges. During a raid in Jenin, Israeli forces and Palestinians clashed; 1 Palestinian was injured by a rubber-coated bullet. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian minor was arrested. In Syria, an Israeli drone strike killed 1 person near Quneitra. Syrian opposition media reported that the man was a Hezbollah operative, while Syrian state media said he was a local policeman. (HA 2/27)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers vandalized 8 Palestinian-owned cars and sprayed racist graffiti on buildings in Yasuf. Israel settlers and military escort toured Joseph’s Tomb near Nablus, leading to confrontations with Israeli protesters; 4 Palestinians were injured by rubber-coated bullets and 16 others suffered tear-gas related injuries. 25 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around al-Ram, Hizma, Ramallah, Nablus, Qalqilya, Jericho, and Bethlehem. During a raid in Hebron, Israeli forces seized machinery from a blacksmith. In East Jerusalem, 2 Palestinians were arrested during raids in Bayt Hanina. 50 former foreign ministers and leaders of European countries wrote an open letter sharply criticizing the U.S. administration’s peace plan, saying it “evoke[s] chilling associations with South Africa’s bantustans.” The letter called on the EU to reject the U.S. peace plan. In the West Bank, Israeli forces arrested 21 Palestinians during raids in and around Ramallah, Hebron, Bethlehem, Jericho, Qalqilya, Tubas, Jenin, and Nablus. Israeli forces injured 2 Palestinians with rubber-coated bullets during a raid in Bayt Sira. In East Jerusalem, 15 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Issawiyya. In Gaza, the rocket exchange continued from 2/23; there were no reports of casualties but reports of damage in Gaza, including to the power grid in Khan Yunis. A truce between Islamic Jihad in Palestine and Israel was implemented at the end of the day. Israeli forces also opened fire on Palestinian agricultural lands east of Khan Yunis and Dayr al-Balah; no injuries were reported. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered 12 West Bank settlement outposts, deemed illegal by Israel, to be connected to Israel’s electrical grid. The Israel Lands Authority also issued tenders for the construction of 1,077 housing units in the East Jerusalem settlement Givat Hamatos. (HA, HA 2/24)

The PA prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh called on all Palestinians working in Israeli settlements to stop working there. According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, around 23,000 Palestinians work in settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. (WAFA 2/24)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces attacked Palestinian protesters throwing stones in Kafr Qaddum by using a bulldozer to push large stones downhill toward the protesters, 1 Palestinian was hospitalized after being hit by 1 of the stones. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinians protesting the U.S. administration’s peace plan in and around Beita, Nablus, Jenin, Qalqilya, al-Fawar refugee camp, and Bil‘in, leading to tear-gas related injuries. Israeli armed settlers attacked Palestinians in al-‘Awja, injuring 2 Palestinians who were taken to a hospital in Jericho. Israeli settlers also toured 2 Palestinian villages near Tubas; before the settlers arrived, Israeli forces had sealed off a main checkpoint in the area to prevent the movement of Palestinians. Qatar announced that it would increase its aid to Gaza by $15 million after a meeting between Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and Qatari envoy Mohammed al-Emadi. Part of the aid package provides some 120,000 Palestinian families in Gaza $100 by the end of February and $24 million would be spent on building a new hospital in Rafah. (HA 2/22)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces arrested 12 Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Jericho, Qatanna, Ramallah, al-Bireh, Bethlehem, Nablus, and Hebron. PA security forces violently dispersed a celebration for the release of a Palestinian from Israeli prison; 1 Palestinian minor was fatally wounded and another injured. Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian shepherds east of Yatta. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces demolished a horse barn in Jabal Mukabir. In Gaza, Israeli authorities said they would expand the fishing zone to 15 nautical miles, and allow an additional 2,000 merchants to obtain exit permits. In the West Bank, Israeli forces killed 1 Palestinian during a protest in Tulkarm. 11 Palestinians and 2 Israeli soldiers were injured during clashes in ‘Azun, where Palestinians mourned the death of the PA police officer who was killed on 2/6; 8 of the Palestinians were shot by live ammunition. Israeli forces also violently dispersed protests against the U.S. administration’s peace plan in and around Nablus, Jenin, Kafr Qaddum, and Jericho, leading to tear-gas related injuries. 6 Palestinians were arrested, including 2 at checkpoints in Hebron and near Nablus, 1 during a house raid in Hebron, and 3 during clashes with Israeli forces near Ramallah. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces raided the Haram al-Sharif compound, injuring 3 Palestinians. Israeli forces also arrested 1 Palestinian during a house raid in Ras al-Amud. In Gaza, Palestinians gathered to protest near Khuza‘a; several Palestinians suffered tear-gas related injuries when Israeli forces violently dispersed the protest. Israeli forces also opened fire on Palestinian farmland east of Dayr al-Balah and Rafah; no injuries were reported. In Israel, Israeli police turned back buses transporting Palestinians going to worship at the Haram al-Sharif compound. In the West Bank, Israeli forces demolished a blacksmith shop in Hizma and handed demolition notices for Palestinian-owned homes in the northern part of the Jordan Valley. 19 Palestinians were arrested, including 17 during late-night raids in and around Jenin, Tubas, Jericho, Bayt Fajjar, and Hebron; and 2 at different flying checkpoints near Jerusalem. A talk by a Palestinian citizen of Israel at the Hecht Museum at Haifa University was canceled by the Hecht Museum because the artist was “Palestinian,” which would displease the Hecht Foundation. The Haifa University condemned the decision and relocated the talk elsewhere on campus. (HA 1/16)

Israel carried out air strikes against a Syrian military base in Homs, killing 3 people and injuring several others. (AJ, HA 1/15)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces informed the family of an alleged Palestinian attacker that it would demolish their home for a 2d time. Israeli forces had demolished the family’s home once in April 2018 and would demolish what the family had rebuilt. Israeli forces also seized a vegetable stall at the Wadi al-Khalil checkpoint. 8 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Bethlehem, Jericho, and Tulkarm. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire on Palestinian fishermen west of Jabalia;, no injuries were reported. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers cut down 50 olive trees in al-Sawiya south of Nablus. 12 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Bayt Awa, Bayt Fajjar, Ramallah, al-‘Arub refugee camp, and Abu Dis. During a raid in Jericho, 6 Palestinians were injured by rubber-coated bullets and others suffered tear-gas related injuries after clashes broke out between Israeli forces and Palestinians. Israeli defense minister Naftali Bennett told reporters that he had created a task force to develop plans for the future of Area C, to which he said, “[t]he State of Israel’s policy is that the land in Area C belongs to [Israel].” (HA 1/9)

U.S. secretary of state Mike Pompeo said via video during a Jerusalem policy forum that changing U.S. policy on the Israeli settlements in the West Bank was returning to a “balanced and sober” approach to the peace process and reiterated the administration’s position that Israeli “settlements don’t inherently violate international law.” (REU 1/8)

U.S. president Donald Trump responded to the Iranian strikes on U.S. bases in Iraq on 1/7 by announcing additional sanctions on Iran. (AJ 1/8)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces fired tear gas and live ammunition at Palestinians during a raid in Bayt Umar, causing tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also demolished a mobile home and a barn, seized 5 mobile homes, and dismantled and seized 9 residential structures near Jericho. 18 Palestinians were arrested, including 13 during late-night raids in and around Bayt Fajjar, al-Bireh, ‘Urif, Nablus, and Qalqilya; and 5 at checkpoints near ‘Azun and Nablus. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrested 7 Palestinians, including 6 during late-night raids in Issawiyya and 1 at the Haram al-Sharif compound. In the West Bank, 7 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Qalqilya, Nablus, Salfit, Jericho, and Hebron. In East Jerusalem, 2 Palestinians were arrested in the Old City. In Gaza, Israeli forces struck several targets, causing damage; no injuries were reported. An IDF spokesperson said that the attack was in response to a rocket fired at Israel on 12/25. The organizing committee of the Great March of Return announced the suspension of the weekly Great March of Return protest to the end of March 2020. The announcement also declared that from April 2020, the protest would be monthly instead of weekly. (AJ, HA 12/26)

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu won the Likud leadership primary over his rival Gideon Sa’ar with 72.5 percent of the vote. Netanyahu said in his victory speech that he would work toward U.S. recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and all Israeli settlements in the West Bank. In the West Bank, Israeli forces demolished 2 residential structures near Hebron and razed Palestinian-owned land near Nablus. 17 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Bayt Duqqu, Bethlehem, Ramallah, Hebron, and Jericho. Israeli forces also seized a Palestinian-owned tractor near Tubas. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces demolished 1 Palestinian-owned home under construction in Issawiyya, delivered a demolition order for another house in Issawiyya, and demolished 2 homes in Jabal al-Mukabir. 14 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Issawiyya, al-Tur, and Ras al-Amud. In the West Bank, 14 Palestinians were arrested, including 11 during late-night raids in and around Hebron, Ramallah, Bethlehem, and Jericho; 3 were arrested at flying checkpoints near Qalqilya. During a raid in Ramallah, 1 Palestinian paramedic was injured by gunfire as Palestinians clashed with Israeli forces; others suffered tear-gas related injuries. In Israel, a Palestinian village was raided by Israeli extremists, slashing the tires of some 20 Palestinian-owned vehicles and writing racist graffiti like “Muhammad is a pig” on buildings, including a mosque. Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian farmers near Yatta, preventing them from farming their land. Israeli settlers also installed a mobile home on Palestinian-owned land near Burqa. 9 Palestinians were arrested, including 8 during late-night raids in and around Hebron and Tulkarm; 1 was arrested at a checkpoint near Tubas. In the West Bank, 2 Palestinian families were notified that Israel intend to seize 4 dunums of their land in Jaba‘ for construction of a parking lot for Israeli military vehicles. A Palestinian family from Ya‘bad accused Israeli soldiers of stealing money and jewelry from their house during a late-night raid. Israeli forces also demolished 2 Palestinian-owned water tanks near Tubas and seized a cement mixer near Salfit. 12 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Ramallah, Nablus, Jericho, and Hebron. In East Jerusalem, 2 Palestinians were detained in al-Aqsa Mosque during prayers; both were released after 5 hours of interrogation and banned from entering the mosque for 2 weeks. During a visit by the Irish minister of foreign affairs Simon Coveney to Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank, the ministry announced that Ireland was funding a $8.8 million project for construction of solar panels in Gaza in partnership with the French Development Agency. Foreign Affairs Minister Coveney met with PA prime minister Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah during his visit. (HA, WAFA 12/3)

In France, the French parliament passed a resolution to combat anti-Semitism that included anti-Zionism and criticism of Israel. The resolution adopted the language of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of anti-Semitism which equates some criticism of Israel as anti-Semitic. The resolution was passed despite a petition signed by 129 Jewish and Israeli scholars warning the French parliament about equating anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism. (HA 9/4)

At the UN, 5 resolutions pertaining to Israel and Palestine passed in the General Assembly. 13 countries changed their vote, compared to previous years, on the resolution in support of the Division for Palestinian Rights of the Secretariat. The 13 countries that previously abstained on the yearly vote were Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Brazil, and Colombia. In the West Bank, Israeli forces demolished a coffee shop in Battir. For the 2d day in a row, Israeli forces fired tear gas near schools in Hebron, causing tear-gas related injuries among students. 13 Palestinians were arrested during raids in and around Bethlehem, Hebron, Tulkarm, Ramallah, Jericho, and Tubas. In East Jerusalem, 12 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Issawiyya. In Gaza, 1 rocket was launched from Gaza toward Israel, landing in an open area and causing no damage or injuries. Omar Shakir, the Human Rights Watch director for Israel and Palestine, left Israel after being expelled. Shakir’s deportation proceedings started in May 2018 and the decision to expel him from the country was upheld by the Israeli Supreme Court on 11/5. Shakir will remain in his position working from Jordan. (HA 11/25)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces demolished a Palestinian-owned house in Dura. 6 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Birzeit, Nablus, Hebron, Tubas, and Jericho. Israeli forces raided several neighborhoods in Ramallah, leading to clashes with Palestinians; tear-gas related injuries were reported. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrested PA minister of Jerusalem affairs Fadi Hidmi during a house raid and delivered an arrest summons for PA governor of Jerusalem Adnan Ghaith and his son. Minister Hidmi and Governor Ghaith were arrested because they were going to an official event in East Jerusalem, which Israel does not allow PA officials to attend. Elsewhere, Israeli police raided a Palestinian-owned butcher shop and ordered it closed for 15 days for hiring a Palestinian resident of the West Bank. In the West Bank, Israeli forces arrested 17 Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Qalqilya, Ramallah, Tubas, Jenin, Hebron, and Nablus. In Gaza, an Israeli drone was intercepted by Hamas. Later, rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel, close to where Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was addressing a crowd; he was subsequently evacuated. Israel then struck 15 different targets in Gaza, causing damage but no injuries were reported. Israel forces also opened fire near the Gaza fence; no injuries were reported. Prime Minister Netanyahu announced that, if reelected, he would annex the Jordan Valley from the northern part of the West Bank to the southern part, effectively surrounding the West Bank by Israel and creating small enclaves of Palestinian cities and villages in the area annexed, including Jericho. Netanyahu’s announcement drew condemnation from many countries and organizations. The U.S. responded that, “[t]here is no change in United States policy at this time.” PA president Mahmoud Abbas warned that if Israel annexed parts of the West Bank, the PA would end all agreements with Israel. In the West Bank, Israeli forces closed a major artery connecting Hebron and Bethlehem with central and northern West Bank. Israeli forces also arrested 5 Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Jericho, Tulkarm, and Bethlehem. Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian vehicles near Huwwara south of Nablus. In East Jerusalem, 2 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Silwan and Issawiyya.  Israeli drones were shot down over Beirut in a Hezbollah-dominated neighborhood. 1 of the drones was carrying explosives. A Hezbollah spokesperson denied that Hezbollah had shot down the drones. Lebanon’s prime minister Saad Hariri called the drones an open attack on Lebanon’s sovereignty and an attempt to foment regional tensions. (AJ, AJ, HA 8/25; HA 8/26)

Commenting on Israel’s strikes in Syria on 8/24, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech that Israel did not hit Iran’s Quds Force but Hezbollah forces, killing 2 Hezbollah members. 1 commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard also denied that Israel had hit the Quds Force. In the West Bank, Israeli forces seized 1 tractor and 2 vehicles during a raid in Ras al-Ahmar in the Jordan Valley. Israeli forces also demolished 4 barns and a house under construction near Bayt Jala. Israeli settlers from the Yitzhar settlement raided ‘Urif south of Nablus, throwing stones and bottles at buildings, causing damage. 26 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Nablus, Jenin, Tulkarm, Bethlehem, Hebron, and Jericho. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces demolish 1 house in Bayt Hanina and 1 wall in Issawiyya. Israeli forces also arrested 7 Palestinians during late-night raids in Issawiyya. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire on Palestinian fishermen in 3 separate incidents; 1 Palestinian was arrested and 1 boat confiscated. An Israeli court ruled that 6 Palestinians from the bedouin village of al-Araqib in southern Israel have to pay $372,000 for their own evictions. Al-Araqib was last demolished on 8/5 for the 149^th time since 2010. (HA 8/8)

In the West Bank, 5 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Burqin and Jenin. Israeli forces seized an agricultural irrigation network in Jiftlik near Jericho. Israeli forces also demolished a playground, several water wells, and trees in the southern Hebron Hills. In East Jerusalem, Israel’s minister of agriculture and rural development Uri Ariel toured the Haram al-Sharif compound with a group of 42 Israeli settlers and police escort. In Gaza, Israeli authorities prevented a soccer game from being held between a team from Gaza and a team from the West Bank as Israel delayed issuing permits for the Gaza players. In the West Bank, Israeli forces demolished a Palestinian house under construction east of Jericho. Israeli forces also razed tracts of Palestinian-owned farmland west of Bethlehem, in Madama, and Burin near Nablus. In Tarqumiyya, Israeli forces demolished a greenhouse and razed land belonging to 2 Palestinian families. In Kafr Haris near Salfit, Israeli settlers injured a Palestinian while throwing stones at his house. In a separate incident, Israeli settlers ignited 2 Palestinian-owned olive groves in Madama. 8 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Ramallah, Nablus, Bethlehem, and Qalqilya. In East Jerusalem, 3 Palestinians were wounded and 1 arrested during an Israeli raid in Issawiyya. A 60-year-old man died of wounds sustained after being beaten by Israeli forces earlier in June. In the West Bank, 3 Israeli settlers were arrested; 2 of them for hate crimes against Palestinians and 1 for the attack on Israeli forces on 5/25. All 3 settlers were from the Yitzhar settlement. Israeli forces also arrested 8 Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Hebron, Ramallah, Jericho, and Jenin. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrested 3 Palestinians during late-night raids.
