The Washington Post published an investigation into the 2/22 raid on Nablus in which 11 Palestinians were killed and 102 were injured, saying that Israeli forces fired at least 14 shots at unarmed Palestinian civilians taking cover outside of a mosque, 2 of whom were killed and 3 of whom were injured. Bloomberg reported that Israel and Saudi Arabia have intensified talks on developing a closer military and intelligence sharing relationship. According to Bloomberg sources, the two countries held talks on the sidelines of the U.S.-Gulf Cooperation Council Working Group meeting in Riyadh and are expected to continue talks at the Munich Security Conference in Prague in the coming days. In retaliation for the UN General Assembly vote on 12/30/22 to ask the International Court of Justice for its opinion on the legality of the Israeli occupation, the Israeli cabinet imposed a series of sanctions against the PA and Palestinians in the West Bank. First, seizing $39 million from the tax collected on behalf of the PA to pay to Israeli victims of Palestinian attacks. Second, seizing the funds from the PA which Israel deems the PA spent for payments to Palestinian prisoners and their families in 2022. Leaders at the Arab-China Summit in Riyadh called for a just and lasting solution, based on the 2-state solution, to the Israeli occupation of Palestine in their final communique of the summit. Palestinian member of the Knesset and leader of the Hadash party Ayman Odeh met with UN secretary-general António Guterres in New York, briefing Guterres on his concerns about the government Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to present within a couple of weeks. The UN special political and decolonization committee approved draft resolution A/C.4/77/L.12/REV.1 requesting the International Court of Justice give its opinion on the legal status of the Israeli occupation of Palestine since 1967. Malaysian authorities freed a Palestinian man who had been abducted, allegedly by Malaysian nationals working for Israel and trained by the Mossad in Europe. The alleged agents were arrested. Israel’s defense ministry said that Israel will pay the family of Omar Abdalmajeed As’ad, a U.S. citizen who was killed by Israeli forces during an arrest raid in Jiljilyya on 1/12, $139,000 in exchange for the family withdrawing its lawsuit against the state. The brother of As’ad told The Guardian that his family had not been contacted by the Israeli defense ministry and that they would not accept a deal that forces them to drop their lawsuit, saying they want justice. Booking.com published warnings for listings in the West Bank. Booking.com had initially said it would will add a human rights warning to properties in the West Bank owned by Israeli settlers and add the word “occupied” to text referring to those properties. The final version was much more ambiguous as it referred to the listings as “conflict-affected,” following an Israeli pressure campaign. PA president Mahmoud Abbas addressed the UNGA, saying that Israel is not a partner in peace and that the country is working to undermine the 2-state solution. President Abbas called on the international community to deal with Israel as an occupying state. Abbas also lambasted Israel’s impunity in continuing its settlement enterprise, in not dealing with settler attacks, and in killing Palestinians, mentioning Shireen Abu Akleh, saying that since Israel is not abiding by the Oslo Accords, that the PA will not either and will instead seek justice at international courts. Furthermore, Abbas said that Israel is establishing apartheid, asking the audience why it is not holding Israel accountable for its crimes and to implement UN resolutions on Palestine. Lastly, Abbas said the PA will seek full membership at the UN and called on UK, the U.S., and Israel to recognize their responsibility in the Nakba.
