The IDF assassinates Hamas mbrs. Nabil al-Su‘aidi and Rabah Zaqqut, firing a missile at their car as they drive in Gaza City, wounding 5 bystanders (including 2 children); fires on residential areas of Balata r.c., then fires on stone-throwing youths who confront the troops; raids an Islamic charitable trust and elementary school in Hebron, confiscating equipment, money; conducts arrest raids in Aida r.c., Jenin, Nablus. Palestinians fire a Qassam rocket at Sederot, causing light damage but no injuries. The AMB also executes 2 Palestinian collaborators in Tulkarm. In Hebron, a Jewish settler attacks, beats 2 Palestinian Waqf employees cleaning the Muslim side of the Ibrahimi Mosque/Tomb of the Patriarchs, is later arrested by the Israeli police. The IDF makes a failed assassination attempt on Hamas mbr. Khalid Massud, firing missiles at his car as he drives btwn. Gaza City and Jabaliya r.c.; 1 Palestinian bystander is killed, Massud and 25 bystanders are wounded. The IDF alsosends troops back into Nablus to raid a hospital, arrest and take away 2 AMB mbrs. wounded on 8/22, including 1 who was in intensive care; fires on, shells Palestinians in Hebron (wounding 5), Khan Yunis (wounding 2). Some 50 Palestinians, including Waqf official Mustafa Abu Zahara, stage a sit-down prayer vigil blocking Israeli police fr. leading a group of Jewish tourists fr. entering the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif; Abu Zahara, several others are arrested. The IDF seals the West Bank and Gaza; surrounds, tightens closures on all Palestinian cities; sends additional tanks to the outskirts of Ramallah; conducts arrest raids in Hebron, detaining 17 Palestinians, including relatives of the 8/19 bomber; fires on residential areas of Rafah. Late in the evening, the IDF imposes curfews on, sends tanks and troops into Hebron (raiding, searching 3 mosques), Jenin, Nablus (where residents report hearing helicopters, machine gun fire through most of the night), Tulkarm (where the IDF fatally shoots 1 Palestinian, wounds 7). Israel also opens the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif to non-Muslims without agreement of the Waqf; some 150 Jews under police protection visit the site. U.S. Pres. George W. Bush phones Sharon to tell him that Israel has a right to defend itself following the “vicious” 8/19 bombing, reportedly does not urge restraint. Israeli border police open fire on an Israeli Arab vehicle nr. the Green Line that they mistakenly believe to be a carload of “terrorists” infiltrating fr. the West Bank, killing 1 Israeli Arab, wounding 1. The IDF conducts arrest raids in Jenin (targeting Islamic Jihad). Israel’s Jerusalem police arrest 200 Palestinians fr. Hebron, Nablus for being in Shu‘fat r.c., in East Jerusalem, without permits. A group of religious Jews on an Israeli police-escorted tour of the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif attempt to perform rituals there; Israeli police remove the group when Waqf guards attempt to intervene; Arafat calls the tours “provocative,” warns serious consequences may be unavoidable if Israel continues to permit such visits. The IDF completes its redeployment fr. Bayt Hanun, opens Gaza’s main north– south road to joint patrols with the PSF, removes many roadblocks and checkpoints in n. Gaza. Nr. Nablus, AMB gunmen ambush, fatally shoot a Bulgarian who works at a nearby Jewish settlement; the AMB has not signed on to the Hamas–Islamic Jihad–Fatah cease-fire. Israel acknowledges that for several days, police have been escorting Jews on tours of the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount, despite the government’s failure to reach an agmt. on such visits with the Waqf; the holy site was closed to non-Muslims after Sharon’s controversial visit to the site in 9/01 that sparked the current intifada. Israeli authorities inform residents of Bayt Iqsa, northwest of Jerusalem, that 14,000 dunams of their communal land will be expropriated for construction of a new Jewish settlement to be called Alona. The UN sends an envoy to the West Bank to investigate the 11/22 death of a UNRWA official, new charges (11/23) by Israel that Palestinian gunmen were firing from inside the UNRWA’s Jenin r.c. compound, prompting the IDF gunfire. The IDF fatally shoots a Palestinian farmer and demolishes a chicken farm, irrigation system in Abasan; bulldozes 6 dunams of Palestinian land nr. Kefar Darom; uses an amublance carrying patients as cover for firing on stone-throwing Palestinians in Nablus. In Hebron, Jewish settlers bar the muezzin at the Ibrahimi Mosque/Tomb of the Patriarchs fr. giving the call to prayer; invade Waqf offices, vandalizing equipment, making a bonfire out of documents (including deeds to all Waqf property in the city); break into a local Palestinian school, spray painting walls with "Death to Arabs," Stars of David. Jewish settlers fire on Palestinians harvesting olive nr. Nablus, causing no injuries; the IDF intervenes, arresting 6 Palestinians, barring others fr. continuing the harvest. 2 bombs, the 4th and 5th since Sharon's 2/6 election, explode outside the Jewish settlements of Talpiot, French Hill in East Jerusalem, killing an apparent Palestinian suicide bomber, injuring 35 Israelis. Islamic Jihad takes responsibility for both attacks. Right-wing opposition MKs, Jewish settlers accuse Sharon of not taking Israeli security seriously and demand retaliation, with Likud Education M Limor Livnat saying Arafat should be targeted. In the West Bank and Gaza, Israeli-Palestinian clashes continue, leaving 1 Palestinian dead. In Hebron, Jewish settlers attempt to storm Abu Sunayna for a 2d day, are push back by the IDF (which continues to urge Palestinian residents to evacuate the area). After dark, the settlers set fire to 5 Palestinian-owned stores, 7 cars, Waqf offices in the PA-controlled section of Hebron. Jewish settlers place caravans on confiscated Palestinian land on Mount Jarzim in Nablus.
