Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies (Tel Aviv U.) publishes poll of non-settler, non-kibbutz mbr. Israeli Jewish pop. showing 58% believe the Arabs want peace, 95% of Israelis want peace; 29% favor Palestinian autonomy, 20% favor returning o.t. to Jordan; favor of a Palestinian state, annexation, and annexation with transfer each garnered 13%. 46% refuse to give back any of the Golan Heights, 33% would give back a small part. 75% believe military action can stop the intifada and terrorism, 60% feel the govt. has been too soft on this. Ethiopia has reportedly stopped issuing exit visas for Jews in attempt to compel Israel to send Ethiopian gov't. more weapons. Occupied Palestine/Israel: Shimon Peres meets for 2 hours in Cairo with Pres. Mubarak. Peres says differences that are obstructing peace efforts "can be solved in a very short while"; also says that "we do not object to two deported Palestinians in the team [of possible Palestinian negotiators]" [NYT, WP, LAT 1/25].

Reacting to Peres' statements, Shamir's office says "People who are deportees have been deported because they were busy with anti-Israeli activity and terrorism" [WP 1/25]; office also states that Yitzhak Rabin was not authorized to make statements to Baker regarding the composition of the Palestinian delegation, statements revealed on 1/23 [FBIS 1/24].

Faisal Husayni says that while he was in prison on 1/21 Shin Bet officers tried to coerce an admission of illegal political activity by offering to release imprisoned Arabs if he confessed to funding the intifada and writing leaflets. Husayni says that Israeli threatened to make further arrests if he did not cooperate [NYT 1/25].

Other Countries: Hadashot reports secret U.S. diplomatic survey, conducated at the request of the State Dep't., says that Israeli ministers Arens, Rabin, Peres, and Weizman all have had meetings with Faisal Husayni during the past few months [FBIS 1/24].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: IDF bulldozes Qalqilya home of Palestinian convicted of murder [FJ 2/5]; at least 6 other homes are destroyed by IDF [FBIS 1/26].

2 IDF soldiers in Rafah are injured by thrown rocks; army uses tear gas to disperse crowd of youths [FBIS 1/26].

Arab World: Citing Lebanese Christian army commander Michel Aoun's "erratic and threatening behavior," U.S. evacuates its embassy in Beirut [NYT, WP, LAT 9/7].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Gaza, Israeli troops fire at demonstrating Palestinians, injuring 21. UN workers charge Israeli authorities stopped an ambulance and arrested 2 Palestinians on their way to the hospital [MET 9/19].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: P.M. Peres meets with 25 non-PLO Palestinians from West Bank and Gaza, mostly pro-Jordanian Israeli-appointed mayors not previously involved in peace process, to discuss plans to appoint Arabs from the occupied territories to head various departments of the Israeli military govemorates in the occupied territories and to give these officials powers to run daily affairs; Peres also suggests Arabs may be appointed mayors to West Bank cities which are currently run by Israeli officers [BG, JTA 8/4; FJ 8/8]. Chicago Tribune reports that P.M. Peres and Defense Minister Rabin approved plan to send $2 billion worth of weapons to Iran, in violation of U.S. policy [CT 8/3].
