Arab World: Israeli warplanes bomb, destroy Lebanese Communist Party base in Rmaileh, 20 miles south of Beirut. At least 3 dead, 15 wounded. Occupied Palestine/Israel: 15-year-old Palestinian is killed, 12 are wounded in clash with IDF forces in Jabaliyyah camp. Commercial strike held in Ramallah [FBIS 8/ 21]. 3 Palestinians are wounded by gunfire while collecting magnetic ID cards in Jabaliyyah camp [FBIS 8/23]. In Jerusalem, Israeli soldier is stabbed by Palestinian youth, who is later arrested; the soldier was slightly injured [MET 8/29].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: General strike is observed marking the 35th anniversary of Israel's raid on Qibya [LAT 10/15]. A poll of 1,200 Israelis reveals that 60% are willing to trade some land for peace; 46% favor trading all of the occupied territories for peace; 57% oppose talks with the PLO even if the PLO recognizes Israel and pledges to end terrorism; 71% believe that the PLO does not want peace [LAT 10/ 15]. The military lifts aweek-long curfew on Nablus [LAT 10/15].

Arab World: Hani al-Hasan, senior Fateh official, states the PLO is willing to join Jordan in political confederation in order to satisfy American and Israeli demands [WP 10/16]. Al-Hasan says he is going to Mecca to ask Islamic authorities to issue a fatwa (religious edict) telling Arabs in Israel to vote for the candidate most likely to make peace with the Palestinians [WP 10/16, CSM 10/17].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: The Washington Post reports that Faysal al-Husayni, arrested and placed under administrative dtention last week by Israeli authorities, has been linked to effort to issue Palestinian declaration of independence [WP 8/7]. Asst. Sec. of State Richard Murphy warns top Israeli leaders that situation in the Middle East is becoming more unstable. [LAT 8/8]. In Ramallah a strike continues in protest of killing of Palestinian youth [FJ 8/14].

Arab World: King Hussein announces he no longer supports U. S. peace plan in which Palestinians would be represented through a joint delegation with Jordan [LAT 8/8].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Several Palestinians are injured in clash with Israeli troops in Kafr 'Ayn. In Bani Na'im after firebomb is tossed at military vehicle troops round up all males in village between 14 and 60; many are beaten, 20 are arrested. In Duhayshah 1 person is injured during clashes with soldiers. In Qalqiliyyah two people are injured by rubber bullets. Shuwaykah was placed under curfew [FJ 8/14].

Other Countries: Deputy Sec. of State John Whitehead states Hussein's move to distance Jordan from W. Bank means that Palestinians will have to be directly represented in Middle East peace talks; a State Dept. spokesperson says there is no change in policy-that the W. Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Ramallah 24- year-old Palestinian dies of wounds suffered 8/5. Israeli soldiers shoot, wound 2 Palestinians on road near Nablus. Demonstrations occur in Beach and Jabalya camps and Ramallah and Hebron. The military extends closure of universities and educational institutions for month [FJ 8/7].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli High Court delays deportation of Palestinian activist Mubarak 'Awad pending his appeal hearing. Reports indicate 'Awad has been on hunger strike since his arrest 5/5 [WP 5/9]. Authorities begin cutting off electricity to Palestinian villages which have not paid their bills; water is cut off in Attil village near Tulkarm and Nablus-area villages of Bidiya and Yutma [FJ 5/15].

Arab World: Mahmud 'Abbas (Abu Mazin) leaves Amman after 2 days of talks with Jordanian officials [FJ 5/15].
