Arab World: Palestine National Fund (PNF) offices in Amman are reopened [FBIS 8/22].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: At least 3 Palestinians are killed, 6 wounded in clashes throughout O.T. General strike in W. Bank. IDF soldier in Tulkarm injured by a rock. Molotov cocktail hurled at a patrol in Jabaliyyah camp, no injuries. Police use rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse stone-throwing youths in E. Jerusalem. Curfew imposed on al-Ram and Dahiyat al-Barid, north of Jerusalem, following clashes between youths and IDF [FBIS 8/22].

Arab World: UNIFIL places forces on alert because of heavy Israeli and SLA military activity in S. Lebanon [FBIS 8/21].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: More than 80 leading Palestinians from O.T. issue statement rejecting Shamir's call for elections in territories, calling on Israel to negotiate with PLO, attend international peace conference [NYT, LAT 4/27]. General strike is observed throughout O.T. [FJ 5/1].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Tulkarm camp troops shoot, kill 8-year-old Palestinian; 7 Palestinians are wounded at funeral. In Sabra troops open fire, kill 16-year-old Palestinian, wound 9 during demonstration. Troops shoot, kill 14-year-old Palestinian in Beach camp. In al-Shaja'iyah 14 Palestinians are wounded during protests [FBIS 4/27, FJ 5/1]. At Ansar 3 guards open fire with rubber bullets, tear gas and wound 5 during protest [FBIS 4/27].

Arab World: According to Beirut radio, IDF, SLA kill 8 Arabs in al-Qawzah [FBIS 4/27].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Hablah Israeli troops dressed as civilians ambush Palestinians killing 1, wounding another [NYT 1/ 25]. In Bethlehem 43-year-old Palestinian dies after exposure to tear gas. In Jabalya 2 Palestinians are shot during demonstrations. In Khan Yunis troops shoot 4 Palestinians [FJ 1/30].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Khan Yunis 3-year-old Palestinian dies after exposure to tear gas. In Nablus 4 Palestinians are wounded during clashes with Israeli soldiers. In Bayt Furik troops shoot, injure 4 Palestinians. Houses are sealed or destroyed in Khan Yunis, Rafah [FJ 10/30].

Arab World: Israeli warplanes strike Palestinian bases in south Lebanon killing at least 15 people, wounding 40 more. The South Lebanon Army attacks Sunni Moslem militia near Sidon, kills 4 people [WP 10/27].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Shops in W. Bank remain closed for second day in protest against deportations of Palestinians [WP 8/3]. Left-wing legislators call special meeting of the Knesset to discuss King Hussein's severing of ties with W. Bank; right-wing legislators will ask for extension of Israeli law to territories [NYT 8/3].

Arab World: In Baghdad PLO spokesman announces emergency session of Palestine National Council will be held to discuss King Hussein's surrendering of sovereignty over the W. Bank [WP 8/3]. Jordanian interior minister Raja'i Dajani says it is too early to comment on effects of King's move on administration of West Bank [WP 8/3].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Nablus troops kill 18-year-old Palestinian, wound 2 more [WP 8/3, FJ 8/7]. In Kafr Thulth 100 olive trees are destroyed. Tear gas is used to break up riots in Bethlehem and Beach camp. Clashes also occur in Burayj, Jabalya, Qalqiliyyah camps [FJ 8/7]. Arab World: Lebanese fighters attack South Lebanon Army position killing 1 SLA fighter [FJ 8/7].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: A 23-year-old Palestinian from Beach camp dies from wounds sustained earlier in the uprising [FJ 7/24]. In Nablus soldiers attack demonstrators with tear gas, live ammunition; 3 youths are injured [FJ 7/24]. In Jenin a Palestinian is injured by gunfire [FJ 7/24].

Arab World: The Islamic Resistance Movement announces that its fighters had launched a 5-sided attack on Israeli, South Lebanon Army troops in S. Lebanon [NYT 7/18].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In field between W. Bank village of Turmus Ayah and Jewish settlement of Shillo, Jewish settler shoots Palestinian shepherd to death, seriously wounds another; settlers allege shepherds threw stones. Army orders all stores in W. Bank closed for 3 days as punishment for 5/4 commercial strike. Jerusalem police detain Ilyas Zananiri, managing editor of Palestine Press Service and Arabic edition of al-Awdah [LAT 5/6]. Mubarak 'Awad, Palestinian American activist, is arrested and ordered deported [WP 5/7].

Other Countries: Trans Technology, U.S. tear gas manufacturer, says it will stop its sales to Israel [WP 5/9].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Scattered demonstrations are reported in W. Bank and Gaza Strip. Soldiers prevent merchants from opening shops in moming in Ramallah; military orders all stores in occupied territories closed during moming. Curfew continues in Balatah refugee camp [FJ 5/8].

Arab World: In final stage of Israel's "Operation Law and Order," SLA troops destroy about 60 houses in S. Lebanon village of Maydun [LAT 5/6].

Rabin returns from U.S. visit [NYT 12/23]. Al-Fajr Arabic daily resumes publication after 10-day closure [FJ 12/27]. Arab and Israeli Hebrew U. students demonstrate outside Knesset in solidarity with Palestinians in W. Bank and Gaza Strip [FJ 12/27]. Other Countries: UN Security Council meeting on recent violence in the Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip, W. Bank adjourns after PLO and some Arab governments push for more strongly worded resolution against Israel [NYT 12/22]. Midhat Hilali, Arab League official, is shot, wounded by unknown assailant in Athens [FJ 12/27]. Ibrahim Khalid, Palestinian gunman who survived December 1985 attack on Leonardo da Vinci airport, refuses to attend his trial [FJ 12/27].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Inside the green line, hundreds of thousands of Arabs join general strike in solidarity with Palestinians in occupied territories. Israeli police, border guards respond to large demonstrations with tear gas, water cannons. About 200 Palestinians are arrested; 17 Israeli police, border guards injured [WP 12/22; FJ 12/27]. Stone-throwing, tire-burning crowds of demonstrators are reported in Jaffa, Nazareth, Lydda, Ramlah, and Abu Ghawsh. IDF troops fire on West Bank Palestinian crowds throwing Molotov cocktails, killing at least 2 in Jenin-area town of Tubas and 1 in Jenin. At least 22 are wounded by gunfire [NYT, WP 12/22]. Official Israeli death toll of Palestinians killed since 12/9 is now at 19 [CSM 12/22].

Arab World: Israeli and SLA forces raid Hizballah-held villages in S. Lebanon [FJ 12/27].

Yitzhaq Mordechai, commander of southern military district, orders arrest of Shin Bet officer who fired on protesters 12/16 [LAT 12/18]. Shops in Arab E. Arab World: Israeli and SLA troops kill 6 Lebanese National Resistance Front fighters in battle near S. Lebanon security zone [NYT 12/18].

Arab World: Two Muslim Americans in Beirut to negotiate for release of American hostages leave country after militiamen ransack, rob their hotel rooms [NYT 2/20]. SLA commander Lahad rejects plan to swap Arab prisoners for foreign hostages, states willingness to swap them for Israeli soldiers [WP 2/20].

Other Countries: Israeli P. M. Shamir, on visit to U.S., says he will accept an international Middle East peace conference if U.S.S.R. and "militant" Arab states are excluded [PI 2/20].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Troops use tear gas to break up group of stone-throwing demonstrators in Ramallah; use tear gas and live ammunition against protestors blockading streets in Rafah, Khan Yunis, and refugee camps in the Gaza Strip, wounding at least 3 [FJ 2/27].

Arab World: Police in S. Beirut report "de facto truce" around Burj al-Barajinah and Shatila refugee camps [LAT 2/20].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Six settlers demonstrate outside offices of al-Fajr newspaper in Jerusalem demanding it be shut because "it serves the PLO" [JP 9/12; FJ 9/13]. Jerusalem Post reports the National Insurance Institute released study showing the number of wage-earning families living below the poverty level in Israel increased 25% last year; 1 out of every 10 breadwinners is now categorized as "the working poor" [JP 9/11]. Energy Min. Moshe Shahal announces Israel will drastically cut oil purchases from Mexico following Mexico's failure to buy an agreed $100 million worth of Israeli exports [JP 9/12].

Arab World: Washington Post reports a 20- member "fact-finding" delegation from the American Jewish Congress has met with Pres. Husni Mubarak and King Hussein in a fact-finding mission to the Middle East. Mubarak and Hussein suggesthe PLO "be put to the test" by the U.S. on the issue of publicly recognizing Israel's right to exist [WP 9/12]. The U.S. should do this by agreeing to meet a Jordanian-Palestinian delegation [LAT 9/12].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli guards storm prisoners in their cells at Gaza prison, using tear gas and clubs, seriously injuring 2. Personal belongings of some prisoners are confiscated. Food and water are denied the prisoners for the following 3 days, and family visits are cancelled [FJ 9/27].

Arab World: Suicide car bomber Mariam Khayr al-Din, 18, rams a checkpoint at Hasbaya, outside the security zone. Casualty reports vary: Israel radio says she killed herself and wounded two SLA militiamen; Syrian Social Nationalist party claims she killed 18 militiamen and 2 Israeli intelligence officers [NYT, LT, LAT 9/12].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: League for Human and Civil Rights in Israel charges IDF detention center at Fara'a (West Bank) is factory for torture of inmates (mostly minors). 2 prisoners to be freed in Nov. 1983 prisoner exchange still held in Atlit prison, appeal to High Court for release. Haifa U.'s Arab Student Union pres. suspended for semester on charges of disturbing MK Sharon lecture (1/19/84), at which he and student companions were tear gassed while attempting to enter lecture hall. Pres. Herzog rejects pardon request by Uri Adiv. [See JPS (Winter 1984) pp. 176-178.] Naturei Karta's Rabbi Hirsch says on US television PLO is sole & democratically-chosen representative of Palestinian people.

Other Countries: Israeli DM Arens reportedly calls US Sec. of Defense Weinberger "a prime candidate for psychoanalysis."

Occupied Palestine/Israel: IDF uses tear gas against Arab students demonstrating near yeshiva at Joseph's Tomb, Nablus. Egged bus traveling between Kafr Saba and Qalqilya, and IDF patrol near Balata refugee camp stoned. IDF soldier wounded while forcing dispersal of demonstrators at Nur Shams refugee camp. Beitunia students protest Egypt-Israel treaty and moves by local mayor to normalize relations with "civil administration. "

Arab World: In S. Lebanon, Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army invades Jibsheet village, kills 2 women, 1 man; IDF searches village, rounding up about 100 "suspects of hostility to Israel." IDF patrol ambushed south of Zahrani River, 1 assailant killed.
