In the West Bank, IDF troops and settlers shoot and injure a Palestinian outside the Gush Etzion settlement bloc nr. Bethlehem after he allegedly attempts to stab an Israeli settler. An IDF soldier is killed in the crossfire. Late at night, Israeli forces take measurements and photographs of the alleged Palestinian attacker’s home nr. Hebron, preparing for possible punitive demolition. Meanwhile, IDF troops raid a village nr. Ramallah, sparking clashes with stone-throwing Palestinian youths; 2 Palestinians are injured and 1 is arrested. The IDF conducts further late-night raids in and around Hebron, Nablus, Jenin, Bethlehem, Tubas, and Ramallah, arresting 21 Palestinians. Israeli settlers assault several Palestinians in c. Hebron, causing no serious injuries. In the West Bank, the IDF keeps closed, for a 3d day, a road nr. Ramallah where a settler was stabbed on 1/18. The IDF expels Palestinian farmers from their land nr. Hebron. IDF troops disperse 200 Israeli settlers demonstrating in c. Hebron during the commemoration of the 1994 massacre of 29 Palestinians at al-Ibrahimi Mosque; 12 settlers are arrested. IDF troops also conduct late-night house searches and raids nr. Jenin, Hebron, Bethlehem, and Ramallah, arresting 7 Palestinians and issuing arrest summons to 1; patrol in al-Fawar r.c., 1 village nr. Hebron, and 1 village nr. Jenin. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrest a Palestinian who they see “moving suspiciously” outside the Old City, according to a police spokesperson. They also arrest 7 Palestinians during raids and patrols in and around the Old City and Silwan. Israeli forces shoot and kill a Palestinian just east of the Old City of Jerusalem after he allegedly stabs and lightly injures 2 Israeli police. A Palestinian bystander is injured in the crossfire. A video of the incident later broadcast by Al Jazeera shows that the Palestinian did not pose an immediate threat to the Israeli forces that killed him. Later, IDF troops shoot and kill a Palestinian driver outside a village nr. Ramallah after he allegedly attempts to ram them. No Israelis are injured in the incident. The IDF says that the alleged ramming occurred amid clashes with stone-throwing Palestinian youths, but Palestinian witnesses deny the claim. Across the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt), IDF troops violently disperse Palestinian, Israeli, and international activists at Friday demonstrations in 6 areas nr. Ramallah (al-Masara, Bil‘in, Ni‘lin, Nabi Salih, Jalazun r.c., and outside Ofer Prison), 1 village each nr. Qalqilya and Bethlehem, and along Gaza’s border e. of Gaza City; 1 Palestinian is killed (nr. Bethlehem), 9 are injured, and 1 is arrested. Meanwhile, the IDF continues its closure of a road nr. Ramallah where a settler was stabbed on 1/18. IDF troops also conduct late-night house searches and raids in 1 village nr. Hebron, arresting 1 Palestinian; patrol in and around Hebron, Tulkarm, Jenin, Qalqilya, and Salfit. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces assault a Palestinian at a mobile checkpoint in Silwan and arrest 2 Palestinians during late-night raids in al-Tur and the Old City. The IDF maintains, for a 3d day, the closure of Qabatiya. Israeli forces shut down the major road to the village with bulldozers, sparking intermittent clashes with stonethrowers wherein 9 Palestinians are injured. They also arrest 5 Palestinians on raids in the village and return the bodies of the 3 Palestinians suspected of perpetrating the 2/3 shooting in the Old City (a joint funeral is held in the evening). Elsewhere in the West Bank, Israeli soldiers shoot and kill a Palestinian youth and arrest a 2d in a village nr. Hebron. The IDF says they were planning to throw Molotov cocktails at passing vehicles. Throughout the day, IDF troops violently disperse Palestinian, Israeli, and international activists at Friday demonstrations against the Israeli occupation and recent violence against Palestinians in 6 areas nr. Ramallah (Bil‘in, Ni‘lin, Nabi Salih, Silwan, ‘Ayn Yabrud, and Jalazun r.c.), 1 village each nr. Qalqilya and Nablus, as well as in 2 areas along Gaza’s border; 10 Palestinians are injured. The Israeli authorities extend the closure of part of Hebron’s Old City through 3/1. It was 1st closed on 11/1/2015, and Palestinians and internationals have been banned from entering since. (MNA 2/5)

The IDF maintains, for a 2d day, the closure of Qabatiya where the 3 Palestinians suspected of perpetrating the 2/3 shooting in the Old City were from. In Ramla, Israel, 2 Palestinian youths are detained after allegedly stabbing and lightly injuring an Israeli security guard at a bus station. In Silwan, unidentified assailants throw Molotov cocktails at an Israeli bus, causing substantial damage and no injuries. Outside the Beit El settlement nr. Ramallah, IDF troops shoot and kill a Palestinian driver at a checkpoint after he shoots and injures 3 Israeli soldiers (1 seriously). The Palestinian, later identified as a police officer, opened fire when an Israeli soldier approached his driver’s side window to perform a security check. After the incident, the IDF imposes a partial closure on the Ramallah area, setting up mobile checkpoints, shutting down many roads, and barring nonresidents from entering the city (more restrictions will be implemented by 2/1). Later, IDF troops shoot and injure a Palestinian driver nr. Ramallah as he allegedly attempts to ram them (none of whom are injured); violently disperse Palestinian youths throwing stones and protesting the closure of a nearby checkpoint (1 Palestinian is arrested and there are no serious injuries). Meanwhile, IDF troops conduct raids and house searches in 1 village nr. In the Jerusalem area, 2 Palestinians are killed in separate incidents. First, an Israeli settlement security guard shoots and kills a 13-year-old Palestinian outside the Anatot settlement after she allegedly attempts to stab him, and the IDF returns the youth’s body to her family. Another Palestinian youth is killed in Abu Dis when a pipe bomb he carries goes off accidentally. Some in the Israeli press claim that the youth was intending to throw the bomb at a nearby Israeli police base. Meanwhile, Israeli forces conduct raids and house searches in 3 areas nr. Hebron and Dahaysha r.c. nr. Bethlehem, arresting 5 Palestinians and issuing arrest summons to 4; patrol in 5 villages nr. Ramallah. They also patrol in Silwan, East Jerusalem, sparking clashes with stone-throwing Palestinian youths (1 Palestinian is injured and another is assaulted and arrested). In Gaza, a Hamas fighter dies in a tunnel collapse nr. Khan Yunis. Separately, unknown persons fire a rocket toward Israel; it lands short of the border, causing no damage or injuries. Hebron after he allegedly attempts to stab one of them, and the Palestinian Red Crescent reports that Israeli forces prevented medics from treating the man. The incident sparks brief clashes between the IDF and stone-throwers; there are no injuries. Separately, IDF troops shoot and kill a 2d Palestinian at a checkpoint nr. Nablus after he stabs and lightly injures an Israeli officer. Meanwhile, Israeli forces demolish 4 greenhouses and a water well in the Jordan Valley, a home under construction in a village nr. Hebron, and 2 livestock structures outside al-‘Arub r.c. nr. Hebron. The IDF conducts house searches and raids in 1 village each nr. Israeli security officials praise the PA’s efforts to address violence since early 12/2015, saying that security coordination between the IDF and PASF has been “exceptionally good” in recent weeks and that PA pres. In Jabal Mukabir, Israeli forces punitively demolish and seal with cement the respective homes of 2 Palestinians killed in confrontations with Israeli forces on 10/13/2015 (Israeli authorities initially planned to demolish both homes, but it was later proven that the 2d home belonged to the deceased’s sister). Meanwhile, Israeli forces shoot and injure a Palestinian nr. the Old City after he allegedly attempts to attack a group of Jewish Israelis (1 Israeli is lightly injured during the confrontation). Nablus after he allegedly rams his car into Israeli soldiers, injuring 1. Palestinian witnesses report that the Israeli soldiers opened fire on the car before the driver swerved toward them. Meanwhile, IDF troops conduct raids and house searches in Tulkarm, 2 villages nr. Hebron, and 1 nr. Ramallah, arresting 6 Palestinians. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces violently disperse Palestinians outside the Old City protesting the Israeli authorities’ withholding of the bodies of Palestinians recently killed in confrontations with the IDF; 2 Palestinians are lightly injured and 1 is assaulted and arrested nearby. Further exacerbating Palestinian fears over the Judaization of Jerusalem, the Israeli press reports that PM Netanyahu recently proposed at a cabinet meeting the possibility of revoking the residency status of around 80,000 Palestinians in East Jerusalem who live in neighborhoods on the West Bank side of the separation wall, such as Shu‘fat r.c. According to sources present at the meetings, the cabinet did not discuss the proposal, and Netanyahu called for a separate meeting to discuss it further.
