Influx of Jewish immigrants is causing severe housing shortage in Israel, prompting vehement complaints from Israelis who are being evicted from apartments to make room for Soviet Jews [WP 7/10].

Results of CBS News/New York Times poll taken last month are released, showing U.S. support for Israel is not as solid as it was 2 years ago. Poll reveals majority of Americans who favor sustained military aid to Israel has been reduced, and growing minority now advocates more sympathy for Palestinians; 38% of respondents say U.S. should be more sympathetic to Palestinian concerns than it is now, versus 26% in 1988; 47% of respondents support a Palestinian homeland in O.T., compared to 10% in 1988 [NYT 7/ 9; MEM 7/10; FJ 8/6].

Arab World: Israeli warplanes bomb, destroy Lebanese Communist Party base in Rmaileh, 20 miles south of Beirut. At least 3 dead, 15 wounded. Israeli ground forces, backed by helicopters and artillery, attack another CP camp in Habih Safi, 20 miles north of Israeli-Lebanese border [FBIS 12/26; NYT, WP, CSM 12/ 27].

Arab World: Israeli troops ambush, kill 5 Hizballah fighters insouth Lebanon. Six Israeli soldiers are wounded. The troops were on a search-and-destroy mission. According to the army command the clash was followed by artillery exchanges [WP 8/ 25].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: A general strike is observed in the occupied territories. Several demonstrations areheld on 40-day anniversary of the death of Abu Jihad. Several refugee camps are placed under curfews [NYT 5/26, FJ 5/29].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Soldiers injure 58 Palestinians during clashes in jabalya. The military uproots 150 trees in the village of Bayt Iba [FJ 5/29].

Arab World: Israeli air power and artillery aid the South Lebanon Army's attack on a Hizballah stronghold in S. Lebanon. Israeli helicopter gunships attack Palestinian refugee camp near Sidon. Amal announces it will join Hizballah in the fight against the Israelis. Amal also claims to have shot down an Israeli helicopter over Lebanon [NYT 5/26].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In order to show "Jewish presence" MKs Dov Shilansky and Ovadiya Eli tour Temple Mount [WT 5/25, FJ 5/29]. It is announced that an Israeli consular delegation will visit the Soviet Union for the first time in 21 years. [WP 5/25].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Burayj Palestinian man is shot dead by Israeli troops. A curfew is imposed, 30 people arrested in 'Anabta. One person is shot in Bayt Furik. During demonstrations in Gaza 39 people are injured [FJ 5/29].

Arab World: Large contingent of Israeli forces moves into central sector of Israeli iimposed "security zone" in S. Lebanon to stop "terrorists" from crossing the border. UN spokesman claims Israeli troops in southem Lebanon fired on UNIFIL armored car with rifles and artillery. Three Syrian soldiers are killed while manning a check point near Shatila [WT 5/25]. Israel expels 15 Lebanese from S. Lebanon for refusing to cooperate with newly formed "civil administration" [FJ5/29].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Several thousand people, including several Jews, march to commemorate 30th anniversary of 1956 Kafr Qasim massacre (WP 10/30).

Other Countries: Le Monde reports that Syria helped France reach "truce" with group believed to have exploded bombs in Paris. "Truce" will last until February when Georges Ibrahim 'Abdallah is to stand trial. Meanwhile, Saudi newspaper publishes interview with French interior minister saying Syrian and French secret services were involved in "real cooperation" to prevent terrorist bombings (NYT, WP 10/30).

Arab World: In Lebanon, Palestinian Amal rocket and artillery battles spread to Beirut suburb Burj al-Barajinah, which has been quiet since the summer when 200 were killed in Palestinian camps. Druze leader Walid Jumblatt warns Palestinians against using south Lebanon for "military adventurism." AP reports UN and Palestinian sources estimate 3,500 Palestinian guerrillas have returned to refugee camps in Lebanon in past six months (NYT, WP 10/30). Syria begins formation of joint leftist force to fight Fateh in the Lebanese camps. Force would comprise fighters from Druze Progressive Socialist party, Lebanese Ba'th, Syrian Social Nationalist party, and Lebanese Communist party (JP 10/30).

Arab World: Egyptian Pres. Mubarak and Israeli P.M. Peres meet in Alexandria (first time in five years Egyptian and Israeli leaders have met); Egypt returns ambassador to Israel, withdrawn after 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon; two states agree on arbitration over Taba; discuss Palestinian issue (NYT, WP 9/12). In Tunis, PLO Chairman Arafat meets EC representative Claude Cheysson (FBIS 9/14). Islamic Jihad denies it kidnapped American Frank Reed in West Beirut (CSM 9/12).

Other Countries: French government rejects demands for release of convicted terrorists in exchange for ending bomb campaign (WP 9/12). Washington Post reports Israeli Trade Minister Ariel Sharon visited Istanbul secretly for three days in July (WP 9/11).

Boston Globe reports over 70 military operations have been carried out against Israeli and SLA troops in S. Lebanon security zone in first 2 weeks of November; Israel recently staged 10-day blockade on port of Tyre, shelled Tyre and 6 other villages north of security zone with heavy artillery and tank fire on 11/18 [BG 11/19; WP 11/21].

Complaints registered with Tel Aviv police that Civil Defense volunteers from local high schools randomly beat Arabs; base commander Sarah Ruhamim, reportedly commanded pupils: "Get out of the patrol car and see that the Arabs get a beating; my daughter enjoys it terribly." Ruhamim resigned after sum- moned by CD commander. Arab World: USS New Jersey fires big guns for 5 hours at artillery positions behind Syrian lines. 6th/15th Lancers of British MNF withdraw from Beirut to aircraft carrier Reliant.

Military Action:

Artillery exchanges between PSP, and LAF and LF throughout the day in Chouf, Metn and Aley regions, and in coastal area south of Beirut; sporadic artillery and machine gun fire between rival militias in Tripoli; commander of IDF-backed militia in South Lebanon disbands his unit, joins Amal.

Casualties:
