Three unidentified assailants cross into Israel from Egypt and plant a roadside bomb that they detonate when 2 vehicles pass carrying laborers who are working to build Israel’s new border fence; they then open fire on the vehicles with automatic weapons and rocketpropelled grenades; 1 Israeli Palestinian worker is killed. Israeli border police respond to the scene and exchanges fire with the infiltrators, leaving 2 assailants dead and 4 policemen injured. Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, covering numerous issues including Iran, Syria, military aid, and Obama’s commitment to Israel. Romney advisers accuse Obama of failing to support Israel and of being more concerned with preventing Israel from attacking Iran than halting Iran’s nuclear program. In Lebanon, clashes erupt at the funeral for a Palestinian refugee slain by Lebanese troops outside Nahr al-Barid r.c. on 6/15, leaving 1 Palestinian dead and 7 Palestinians and 3 Lebanese soldiers injured. The clashes spread to ‘Ayn al-Hilwa r.c. in Sidon, where at least 1 Palestinian is killed and 3 Palestinians and 3 Lebanese soldiers are injured. The IDF continues massing tanks, armored vehicles on the n. Gaza border; Sharon instructs security officials to take “all measures, without restrictions, in order to stop the wave of terrorism,” though his advisers suggest that any push into Gaza likely would not happen until after Condoleezza Rice’s visit on 7/22. PLO-Lebanese army ceasefire takes hold in Sidon area after 73 killed, 200 wounded, mostly Palestinians. Under terms of ceasefire agreement, PLO agrees to move heavy weapons out of S. Lebanon, restrict remaining 5,000 fighters, armed only with light infantry weapons, to the 'Ayn al-Hilwa and al-Mi'a wa Mi'a refugee camps. Beirut's bakeries have closed for lack of fuel and flour; dump trucks unable to collect garbage because of lack of gasoline; ambulances reportedly have run out of gas; thousands of Beirut residents gathered at Wazzan's office to protest continuing blockade; Muslim clergyman says residents will take up arms against IDF unless blockade lifted; Wazzan appeals to Habib to persuade IDF to let in medicine, flour, fuel; thousands of residents fill streets stocking up on essential commodities; electricity now available 18 hours per day.

Israel/ Occupied Territories: Former Prime Minister Rabin suggests PLO members with no country to go to be sent provisionally to Tripoli region of northern Lebanon; other Israeli leaders reject Rabin's proposal.

Palestinians/ Lebanese: PLO suggests it move temporarily to northern Lebanon while negotiations continue on its presence in Lebanon; Wazzan conveys offer to Habib, who is reported skeptical; top Arafat deputy says PLO will stop fighting and become a purely political movement if the US recognizes the PLO; Sarkis rejects PLO offer to evacuate to northern Lebanon, fears such a move will only displace conflict elsewhere inside Lebanon; Haddad, speaking from his new headquarters in Sidon's town hall, announces drive to recruit new members to his force.

IDF armored units fight fierce artillery, rocket duels with PLO forces inside Beirut as PLO, for first time, fires back on wide range of IDF gun positions in East Beirut; fighting appeared to intensify following Israeli announcement of little headway in negotiations and consideration of an Israeli military option; IDF rockets landing at rate of 30 per minute, as Burj al-Barajneh, Sabra, Shatila Lailake and the coastal road near the airport are all hit; PLO forces fire on E.
